Chapter 13: Past Events Like Smoke

The brother and sister came to the small square in the community, where there were many fitness facilities, as well as swings and sand pits for kids to play. It was a weekend, with mild weather that wasnt too hot or cold, making it one of the best days of the year in Beijing, and there were still quite a few children out playing.

Holding little sisters hand and walking up front, "Brother, I saw my classmate Xiao Ru, Im going to play with her."

"Go," watching the little girl run to find her playmates, Mu Yang found a stone bench to sit down and watched from afar as a group of children chattered and played together.

His sister was ten years old, exactly 11 years younger than Mu Yang. He still remembered that year when he was also ten years old and was called out by the teacher in school to see his eldest uncle in the office. His eldest uncle was usually very busy and had never come to school to pick him up before, so what was going on today?

The big uncle didnt say a word, but instead directly took Mu Yang to the airport. He saw his father, Mu Shouli, here too, as well as his maternal grandfather, aunt, and uncle Mu Shoushen, whom he hadnt seen in a long time. There were also four middle-aged men he didnt recognize.

Everyones face showed a sorrowful expression, and Fathers eyes were also red, obviously having cried.

Although he was young, he was very sensible and didnt run around or make a fuss, but instead sat quietly there.

Half an hour later, he finally knew everything. His mother had passed away and he hadnt even gotten to see her one last time, leaving behind only a black urn of ashes.

More than a year later, Dad brought a woman home and asked Muyang to call her Auntie. In the end, this woman married Dad, she was Mu Chens mother.

His father asked him to call this woman "Mom", but he was unwilling, and no matter what, he couldnt bring himself to say it. In the end, neither of them insisted, and he ended up calling her "Auntie" until now.

Muyangs father is a high-ranking executive in a foreign company, with an annual salary of 300,000 yuan. After getting married, he bought a house and the whole family moved here.

The old house wasnt sold, Father said its left for Muyang, to be used as a wedding house in the future.

In this family, how to say it, Auntie is a woman with good quality, not treating herself badly, fully meeting the standard of a good stepmother, but she cant get close to me, and after my little sister was born, more thoughts naturally went to my little sister.

Looking at his father, aunt and little sister being affectionate with each other, he always felt that they were the real family, and he was somewhat redundant in this household. So from high school onwards, Mu Yang took the initiative to live a boarding life.

In high school and university, I went back home no more than once a month, except during Chinese New Year when I would stay at home for several days. Even if I did go back, I rarely slept at home.

He often goes to his grandfathers place, where his grandmother passed away early. His grandfather didnt like living with his eldest uncle, so he lived in the old fourth courtyard by himself, enjoying his later years contentedly.

"Brother, Im tired. Lets go home." Little sister Murong Chen said, running over with a sweaty face and holding onto Murong Yangs hand.

Father returned home, and the whole family had a reunion dinner. Father even brought out a bottle of red wine and poured a cup for each person, except for little sister who got orange juice instead.

After dinner, he walked onto the balcony with his father. His father pulled out a cigarette and handed one to Mu Yang, who blinked at him.

"I know you smoke, go ahead and have one if you want."

  "Never mind, I wont bother."

His father lit a cigarette and asked, "Hows your study going?"

  "Not bad."

  "Is the living expense enough?"

"Its enough." Muyang is not a lavish person, and 2,000 yuan per month is sufficient for his living expenses.

"After summer vacation, I will be a senior. What are your plans? Are you still thinking of doing diplomatic work? Where do you plan to intern?"

"Uh, this is moms unfinished career, and its also her beloved career. I want to carry on for mom."

Father was silent for a moment, and Mu Yang knew that his parents were truly in love. They were high school classmates who had a free romance, but after college, his mother was admitted to Beiwai, while his father was admitted to the education major at Beishida, and eventually became a senior executive of a foreign company.

"Ive already talked to my uncle about it," Mu Yang continued, "I want to intern at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but if I want to work there, Ill have to pass the civil service exam. Well see how things go."

"If all else fails, let your grandfather find someone."

"My uncle is working in the department, which is more convenient than Grandpa."

"Thats not necessarily true, although your grandfather has been retired for many years, but a word from him is more effective than your eldest uncle."

"Well see about it then, maybe I can get in myself."

Muyang now has a system, and he will learn Japanese again. Being bilingual is more advantageous than being monolingual. He is also a student union cadre and a probationary party member, which gives him an edge over others.

At night, Mu Yang still didnt stay here and returned to his own home, he felt more relaxed here.

Thinking of traveling around the Republic of China world, but theres nothing to do now or in the past, forget it, go to sleep.

The next day, Muyang dressed neatly and rode his mountain bike to Beiwai High School.

Beiwai is a first-class university, its scores are not much lower than those of Tsinghua and Peking University. If it werent for the fact that Mu Yang has a Beijing hukou (household registration), the admission scores would be much lower than those in other provinces, and he really wouldnt have been able to get in.

Beiwai is most famous for cultivating the largest number of diplomatic personnel in China, known as the cradle of Chinese diplomats, with over 400 ambassadors and more than 1,000 counselors trained, as well as a Nobel Prize winner.

Muyang Xue is an English major in the School of English Language and Literature, Beijing Foreign Studies University. She is a junior student and also serves as the Minister of Publicity Department of the Student Union of the School of English Language and Literature. Both her academic performance and organizational ability have been recognized by teachers and leaders of the school, making her an outstanding student.

Good-looking, tall and healthy, inheriting his mothers beautiful appearance and his fathers height from the outside, it can be considered a good breed.

After all, diplomats are very particular about their appearance. If a diplomat is ugly and short in stature, how can they represent the national image? Therefore, there are many handsome men and beautiful women in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Mu Yang directly came to the classroom, looked around and said "Yang Zi, over here, Ive saved you a seat." Someone waved at Mu Yang, it was Zhou Feng from the same dormitory.

There are four people in the dormitory, but only Mu Yang and Zhou Feng are English majors, so whoever comes earlier will reserve a seat for the other.

"You little guy disappears every weekend and doesnt even participate in the dorms group activities." Zhou Feng said after letting Mu Yang enter.

"What collective activity is this? You didnt mention it beforehand?" Mu Yang asked in surprise.

"Yesterday Old Zhus girlfriend came over, in the evening everyone called their girlfriends, and we all had dinner together, it was a group activity."

"Its her female friend from Beiyou, didnt they break up a while ago? How did they make up again?"

"Its too normal for us to break up and get back together, we were going to invite you over at first, but then we thought, you dont have a girlfriend now, it would be too awkward for you to come alone, so we ended up leaving you out."

"You knew Id be embarrassed without even calling me, did you all imagine it? But last night I really didnt have time, yesterday I went home and had a reunion dinner."

As the two were talking, a middle-aged teacher walked onto the stage and said directly in English: "These two lessons are listening and translation. Today we will use Shakespeares collection as our textbook. Xu You-shan, you come up here and take charge. The rest of you students should all get your spirits up. When it is finished, you will hand it in directly. At that time, everyone will write their names on it, and it will be considered a classroom assignment."

Xu You Shan walked onto the stage, picked up the teachers already opened Shakespearean anthology, and began reading from the marked page. This was "The Merchant of Venice", Act 1, Scene 1. Xu You Shans voice was still very sweet, but most of her classmates were sweating bullets as they listened.

After finishing, many people exclaimed: "Teacher, Shakespeares works are half-white ancient English, just like our Chinese classical language, and its a sudden attack, quite difficult!"

"Lets see your real results, calling out wont work. Xu Youshan, please help me collect all the things you remember before class is over. Of course, you can also choose not to hand them in, and todays classroom homework points will be gone." The teacher said with a smile.

A vast expanse of sorrow, all wailing in unison, mourning for their own academic pursuits.
