Chapter 2: The Territory of Ba County

The autumn is high and refreshing, the sky is so high and blue, the air is filled with the fragrance of soil and grass, without a hint of industrial society.

Walking on the dirt road in sneakers is softer than walking on a cement road. Its been a long time since Mei Yang had this feeling. He was born and raised in Beijing, and most of his relatives are also from Beijing, so he has little experience living outside of the city. Except for a few times when he went traveling with friends, he rarely gets to be close to nature like this.

All around were the villas, after passing through the initial high cornfield, Muyang saw cornfields, soybean fields and cotton fields. Although Muyang had no experience in farming, he also knew that these crops should be from the north, so this place must be the north without a doubt.

He strolled along while observing the surrounding scenery, but his mind was preoccupied with the first task.

According to the literal meaning of the task, I may have been sent back to the time of the Anti-Japanese War. Otherwise, how could there be talk of "devil soldiers"? This period was not a good time, as the Japanese were burning, killing, looting and committing all sorts of evil deeds. If Im not careful, I might get killed by the Japanese devils.

After walking for half an hour, after passing a cornfield, Muyang saw a person in a field planted with low crops, about 40 or 50 meters away from the small dirt road where Muyang was. From a distance, it was an old man, probably around 50 years old.

The old man wore a gray jacket with patches, dark trousers, and on his feet was a pair of cloth shoes that were almost worn out. The old man was facing away from the sun, using a hoe to dig in the ground.

"Hey old man, can you tell me the way?" Muyang shouted at the old man on the dirt road.

The old man heard the sound, his body shook, then he looked up at Mu Yang. Seeing that Mu Yang was alone, he cautiously glanced around and found no outsiders, only then did he slightly put his mind at ease.

Mu Yang didnt notice all this, and now that he had finally met someone, he naturally wouldnt let him go. He trampled over the ditch and went straight down to the field, rushing towards the old man.

The old man gripped his hoe tightly in his hand and looked at the young man wearing strange clothes, with a wary glint in his eyes.

Mu Yang didnt know that nowadays, Chinese people have been poisoned by the Japanese for a long time, and even ordinary civilians will develop deep vigilance towards strangers, let alone Mu Yang, who is full of weirdness.

As he approached, Mu Yang only discovered that the old man was digging sweet potatoes in the field. "Old man, youre digging sweet potatoes. Let me ask you, what place is this and what year is it this year?"

Mu Yangs question is completely in line with the standard rhythm of a time-traveler, it seems like every time-travelers first sentence is always "where am I" and "what year is this", haha, Mu Yang is no exception, absolutely following the experience of his predecessors.

"After listening to the young mans accent, he is a Beijing native, right?" The old man did not directly answer Mu Yangs question, but instead asked.

"Yes, I am a native Beijinger." Murong replied.

"What are you doing here? How did you end up in this place?" The old man continued to ask.

"Im still a student, in college, just out traveling." Murong didnt know the current situation and could only give an ambiguous answer.

"Its not a good time to be out and about in Japan right now, its all stirred up. Id advise you to go back home and live a peaceful life, dont go running around wildly." The old man spoke with a genuine Beijing accent and tone, so he kindly reminded him.

"Thank you for reminding me, sir. But you still havent told me where this is or what year it is," continued Mu Yang.

"Oh, this is Wufangqiao Village, under the jurisdiction of Ba County. This year is 1944, and today is July 21st on the lunar calendar. Youre a university student, how can you not even remember the date? It seems like youve been out for too long. Why dont you hurry back home? Its chaotic with soldiers and horses everywhere, spare your family from worrying." The old man kindly reminded him once again.

Ba County border, 1944 lunar calendar July 21st, Muyang silently memorized these pieces of information.

Ba County, he seems to have some impression, just in the eastern part of Hebei Province, it seems not too far from Beijing, as for what year 1934 was, Muyang really doesnt know, needs to go back and check.

"Hey, old man, how do I get to Ba County?" asked Mu Yang.

"Go east for more than a mile and there is a big road, go north on the big road, after walking eleven or twelve miles, you can see the city wall of Ba County." The old man pointed to the road and said.

"Its not too far away, thank you, old man. By the way, old man, Id like to ask, are there any devils around here?" Mu Yang asked in a low voice.

The old man stood up straight and became vigilant, his hand gripping the hoe tightened, and he asked in a low voice: "What do you ask this for?"

"Im afraid of running into devils on the road and having an accident." Mu Yang also felt that he was a bit abrupt, so he explained.

"Oh, the whole of North China is full of enemy watchtowers, and sometimes they even drive out in armored cars to patrol. There are several hundred enemy soldiers in the county town alone. I think youd better be careful yourself, if they see your outfit, theyll probably arrest you on the spot for questioning."

The old man still couldnt get used to Mu Yangs strange attire and kindly reminded him once again.

Muyang also knew that his outfit was indeed a bit out of place for this era. No matter how he looked at it, the outdoor gear just didnt seem to belong to someone from this time period. It seemed like he really needed to prepare properly.

  "Thank you, sir. Im leaving."

Muyang bid farewell to the old man and headed in the direction the old man had pointed out.

But the old man standing there muttered to himself: "I dont know whats wrong with this young fellow, he still dares to run out by himself at this time of year, isnt he looking for death? I hope he has a smooth and safe journey home."

Mo Yang walked out for over a kilometer and really saw a big road, which was a gray gravel road about ten meters wide. Judging from the tire tracks and footprints on the road surface, this place should be frequently passed by people.

There are many people passing by here, and Mu Yang doesnt dare to go any further, fearing that he might really encounter Japanese soldiers, which would put himself in real danger. Its better for him to go back and prepare before coming back again. Besides, he also needs to go back and thoroughly investigate the information of this era.

Without going on the main road, he directly entered a dense cornfield by the side of the road and then silently muttered to himself "return", and Mu Yang returned to his own home.

Taking a deep breath, Mu Yangs tense mood was slightly relieved. He put down his backpack and took out a can of Wanglaoji from the fridge, gulping it down in one go to quench his heart fire first.

Walked to the computer, turned it on and opened a Word document after booting up, started typing out things that needed consideration - this was Muyangs habit. Write them down, summarize them well, then solve them one by one.

"Confirm the time, Republic of China 33 years old lunar calendar July 21st, location Ba County outside the city, more than ten miles away from the county town, need to prepare a set of clothes suitable for that era, some money, and weapons. Oh, and whether the time is synchronized, how could I forget just now?"

He was typing while muttering to himself, suddenly remembered this matter, then raised his hand to look at his watch, the time was 9:34, hum, he had crossed over at 8 oclock in the morning, walked for half an hour, and chatted with the old man for a while, this time should be about right.

But he lifted his head and saw the computer clock, and was stunned. This is not right, how can the time on the computer be April 5th, 2009 8:47? He had clearly passed almost an hour, but the computer only showed a few minutes passing. Had the computer gone bad?

He ran to the living room and took a look at the quartz clock hanging on the wall, which indeed showed 8:47. It was impossible that all the clocks in the house were broken, so there must be a problem with the time on both sides. It seemed that after he had traveled back in time, he had spent over ten minutes resting and drinking, so did his past self not take up any time?
