Chapter 213: Chinas Diplomats

Mao Yisheng led Koo Vi-kyuin to visit Lloyd George. Although the British Prime Minister was very polite to Mao, he was evasive on the issue of treatment of China as a victorious nation. This visit was not considered very successful.

Muyang and Gu Weijun were dining at a high-end French restaurant. Muyang went to the restroom, and just then, Japanese delegate Makino Shinken, who was also dining there, spotted Gu Weijun sitting alone. He turned his small eyes and walked over.

"Director Gu, why are you eating alone?"

  "No, I came with friends."

"Haha, so you Chinese people also have friends in France?"

"China is not isolated, but you Japan, if you always put on a flattering and deceitful face, ultimately you will have no friends."

"I really don't know what kind of person would be friends with you Chinese people, are they street beggars or unemployed vagrants?" Makino said with a loud guffaw, his small mustache twitching upwards in an extremely arrogant manner.

Muyang had already come out of the bathroom and was standing behind Makino Toshiaki, when he heard this Japanese man say such a thing, Muyang's face turned icy.

"Is it that Japanese people are just so lacking in quality, to be shouting loudly in a restaurant without regard for etiquette? Truly low-class." A cold voice floated up from behind Makino Nobuyuki.

Makino Nobuaki turned around, looking at the young-looking Westerner behind him. The anger on his face subsided a bit as he asked: "I don't know who you are, why did you join our conversation? Isn't that impolite?"

"Because you're blocking my way." Murong said to Gu Weijun, "Don't you Chinese have a saying, 'A good dog doesn't block the road'?"

"Yes, and your French translation is very apt, you are a true language master." Gu Weijun said with a smile.

"You...!" Makino Nobuaki's anger was uncontrollable, "Who are you, after all."

"My name is Joseph M. Williams, now get out of my way because you are blocking my path." said Mu Yang, pointing to the chair beside Pastor Xiang.

A name that wasn't very familiar, Makino Nobuaki was about to say something harsh, but suddenly he remembered the domestic procurement of medicines before, wasn't the one who developed and produced anti-influenza drugs a Dr. Joseph M. Williams?

The recent British Baron and Spanish Duke, is it really you in front of me? You look very young.

"Are you Duke Williams?" asked Makino Nobuaki in a low voice.

"Sir, please leave my sight because I'm going to eat and don't want to affect my appetite." Mu Yang said bluntly as he sat down in his own seat.

Makino Nobuaki was left with a nose full of dust and had no choice but to leave in a huff.

The Paris Peace Conference was held, but the Chinese delegation was isolated from the decision-making level. Britain, France and the United States swallowed up all of Germany's interests, and secretly promised Japan the rights to Shandong Peninsula.

But China is powerless in this regard.

"Mr. Williams, I just received a notice that there will be a committee meeting tomorrow and I am allowed to speak. I hope Mr. Williams can attend at that time. If possible, please testify for my speech." Gu Weijun found Mu Yang in the late afternoon.

"Tomorrow's speech, and you're telling me now?"

"There's no way, China has been excluded. My original idea was somewhat idealized, wanting to fight for China's interests through the Paris Conference, but now it seems that Western countries will not give China this opportunity at all." said Kung Hsiang-hsi.

"What are you going to do then?"

"I will not give up, I will strive for all conditions and try my best to fight for China's rights."

"I will attend tomorrow," replied Mu Yang.

January 28, 1919, The Ten began, with Japan's plenipotentiary representative Makino Nobuaki speaking.

"China did not make any contribution in this war at all, what qualification do they have to be here?" He also looked down on the Chinese delegation with disdain after finishing his speech.

"The Kiautschou Bay concession and the rights of Germany in Shantung Province should be transferred to Japan without condition. The question of Shantung should be settled between Japan and China on the basis of the treaties, agreements, or arrangements which have been or may hereafter be entered into between the two countries."

Mao Yunnai coldly watched the Japanese performance, glancing at French Prime Minister Clemenceau, British Prime Minister Lloyd George and US President Wilson sitting in their seats. These people all had expressionless faces, as if they had known long ago that Japan would produce such a declaration.

All this was done in private transactions, China's opportunity was not at the Paris Conference, and Mu Yang could only sigh.

Gu Weijun took the stage and said in a loud, clear voice. "Shandong is the cradle of Chinese culture, where China's sages Confucius and Mencius were born. Confucius is like Jesus in the West. Shandong is to China what Jerusalem is to the West, whether from an economic, strategic or religious perspective. China cannot lose Shandong, just as the West cannot lose Jerusalem!!!"

Honorable President, honorable representatives, I am delighted to represent China at this conference. I feel a great sense of responsibility because I am representing the country that accounts for one-fourth of the world's population in speaking here today. Mr. Makino just said that China is a victorious nation without sending a single soldier or general. This is ignoring the most basic facts. Look, (showing photos), during the war, China sent 140,000 laborers to Europe, they were scattered all over the battlefield, bleeding and sacrificing just like soldiers of all victorious nations. I'd like to show you another photo of the cemetery of Chinese workers who died in France. There are more than a dozen such cemeteries in France and Europe. Most of them came from Shandong Province, China. What did they die for? It was for winning this war! For bringing peace and tranquility back to their homeland! Therefore, the Chinese delegation firmly believes that when discussing the issue of Shandong Province, the conference will take into consideration China's basic legitimate rights and interests, namely sovereignty and territorial integrity. Otherwise, countless souls in Asia will cry out, and the world will not be at peace!

Today, I have also invited Joseph M. Williams, Duke, who fought in the first line of the Allied forces against Germany and was awarded merits. His experience can prove whether Chinese laborers played a role in this war. I hope to let Joseph M. Williams speak to prove the truth of my words.

"That's all I have to say, thank you, thank you!"

After listening to Gu Weijun's words, the crowd applauded one after another. Muyang also saw for the first time how a diplomat should respond to such a situation, seize the opportunity and make a speech in an originally unfavorable environment.

Gu Weijun's words won the unanimous recognition of all present, regardless of the outcome. This speech made countries around the world recognize Gu Weijun and this Chinese diplomat.

Regarding Gu Weijun's proposal to let Muyang go on stage to testify, this was not a previously arranged procedure. The host asked the three chairmen on stage, possibly considering Muyang's special identity at present, and the three agreed.
