Chapter 18: A familiar’s monotonous life.

Jason walked into the police station. He wasn’t sure if this was the best choice, but he had nothing to lose.

He would just be honest, tell them he was being summoned by a being in another world. The lady at the desk told him to take a seat and someone would be with him in a moment.

Jason got several odd looks as he went and sat down. He wasn’t exactly sure what he was supposed to do. And was starting to second guess his choice to come here. But he had killed a man. He needed to turn himself in.

It wasn’t long before a cop came out to see him. Though it was much longer than he had expected, given his appearance. Now that the world had gone into chaos from the so-called rapture, things were just different, he supposed.

“Can I help you?” The police officer asked.

Jason just blinked a few times in confusion. He was covered in another mans blood and handcuffed. And that’s what the cop asked. “Yes, I’ve come to turn myself in.”

The cop sighed. “And what are you turning yourself in for?”

  “Im Jason Storgan.”

The cop looked annoyed. “Is that name supposed to mean anything to me? Look, kid, we’re full up, and I don’t know what prank you’re trying to pull, but it’s late, and none of us are in the mood.”

Jason glanced at the clock. It was one fifty in the morning. “I was already arrested for killing someone in a bar, but I was summoned to another world and when I returned, I was no longer in the cop car.”

This seemed to annoy the officer even further. “Look, it’s not funny. My son was one of those taken in that so called fucking rapture! I’m going to kindly ask you to leave.”

  “But-”

“No buts, kid, get out of here.”

The officer then turned and began walking away.

“Wait, could you at least take the cuffs off?”

The police officer turned around, eyes hard. He placed one hand on the handle of his gun. “Please vacate the premises, or I will have to resort to force.”

At that, Jason quickly stood up. He had no idea if he would really shoot him here, but the world has changed a lot since the rapture and he wasn’t about to take the chance.

As he began heading for the door, Jason heard someone yelling at the police officer. “Officer Ryan! That is not how we do things here. Even if that was some sort of prank, he could still sue for you threatening him.”

Jason nearly turned around but was afraid the cop would lose his cool and actually shoot him. That had not gone the way Jason had expected at all.

Though part of him was relieved that he would not have to spend the next thirty years in prison. However, that didn’t mean he was off the hook. That cop had just thought he was lying.

As he walked down the sidewalk at two in the morning, he tried to think of the best way to get the cuffs off. If he could at least break the chain, he would be able to at least eat and do things.

Things such as pee. He only had a slight urge at the moment, but that would only intensify the longer he waited. Jason didn’t have friends really, he had acquaintances from work, but showing up on their doorstep at two in the mooring covered in blood splatters and in handcuffs would likely not be the best idea. Not only that, but he was way more buffed up than he had been before, and they may not even recognize him.

Now that he didn’t get arrested, he realized he didn’t want to be.

The only thing he could think of was bolt cutters from the general store. It would be a bit of a walk, but it was open twenty-four seven. He just hoped he didn’t get robbed on the way.

Jason walked into the store about an hour later. Luckily, being a now buffed up man with blood splattered all over his shirt detoured the few tweekers he seen on the streets.

Putting on his best smile, he asked an employee where the bolt cutters were. A female worker in her early twenties with green hair looked at him curiously, but took him to the section with bolt cutters. She then began walking away.

“Wait, could I get some help?”

She looked at him, then looked around as if looking for a camera.

“I’m not trying to prank you or anything. I’ve just had a long night. All these bolt cutters are in cases, and I could really use some help.” Jason pulled the handcuffs apart a couple of times to emphasize his situation.

The young woman narrowed her eyes at him. “Do you have the money to pay for them?”

Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

Jason’s eyes lit up with hope as he moved to grab his wallet. He was able to get his wallet from his back pocket. The worker just continued to glare at him as if she expected him to prank her or something. Turning his back towards her, he held his wallet out.

“Here, look see, I have plenty of money to pay for it. If you cut them, I’ll make it worth your while.”

She looked Jason up, and down before slowly moving over to take his offered wallet. She then took all the cash from his wallet, which was a few hundred dollars, and put it in her bra.

“Okay. I’ll help yeah,” she said, as a sly grin formed across her face.

Handing Jason his wallet back, she moved over to the bolt cutters there were only a couple to choose from.

Grabbing the cheaper ones, she took them out of the plastic wrapping. She then proceeded to cut the cuffs. It was apparently difficult, as she struggled with it for a good bit before finally cutting it.

“Katie, what in the hell are you doing?”

“Shit.” The green hair worker said.

Jason wanted to stretch his hands but refrained from doing so and just gave the new employee his best disarming smile. This woman was in her early fifties and looked like she just found out someone pissed in her coffee.

Forcing his smile to remain, he spoke up. “Katie here was just showing me where the bolt cutters were and helping me choose the best ones.”

The older woman walked up next to Jason and looked him up and down. “We do not allow influencers to shoot videos in our stores. And if you don’t pay for that item.” The woman indicated the bolt cutters Katie was still holding. “Then I will be calling the police!”

“I will, of course, be paying for them.” Jason said.

“Great, follow me then.” The woman said. “And Katie, it’s time for you to clock out you are not authorized for overtime this week.”

“Yes, ma’am.” Katie said as she looked Jason up and down one more time before she handed him the bolt cutters and left.

She had just fleeced him for a few hundred, but Jason could care less. Money was useless when it came to fighting dungeon monsters. Besides, he had plenty of cash at home and several credit cards.

Once he paid for the bolt cutters, he was all but kicked out of the store. He then started back towards his apartment. He wasn’t sure if he should stay there or not since the police may come to look for him eventually, but he didn’t have anywhere else to go.

Stretching his arms while holding the bolt cutters in his one hand, he couldn’t help but think of his mace. He was actually looking forwards to going back to the other world.

Despite the pain, it was an exhilarating feeling to be leveled up, and he found himself looking forward to gaining more levels.

He wasn’t sure if being a familiar to a squirrel was affecting his mental capacity or not.

Hearing a feminine scream took him from his thoughts. His walk turned into a run and he took off in the direction of the sound, bolt cutters in hand.

This was the first time he had run since getting leveled up, and he could definitely tell the difference. Each time he pushed off the sidewalk, he went further and further. It got to the point he was leaping through the air.

Suddenly he was under a bridge where he had seen a few tweekers warming themselves next to a fire.

There were three of them and two of them were holding down a girl. Jason’s eyes widened in surprise when he saw green hair.

“Katie?” Jason said. As he did, all three pairs of eyes turned towards him.

They immediately let go of the girl, and she got to her feet. Fixing her torn shirt, she ran over next to Jason.

“We were just trying to have a little fun.” One of the men said, obviously on something.

“She was asking for it. We were just playing.” Another one said.

Jason stepped forward, and all three stepped back. For the first time, he realized he was several inches taller than he had been. “It doesn’t seem like she was having fun or playing to me.”

Seeing the fear in the tweeker’s eyes gave Jason a huge confidence boost. He had taken on skeletons with weapons. These guys were unarmed.

He then felt something tug on his arm and he turned back. “Let’s just leave.” Katie said. Jason turned back to the three guys and then to Katie. “Please, it’s obvious you could kick their asses if you wanted. But there not worth it.”

Jason took a deep breath. “You’re right. I’ll walk you home.”

They continued down the sidewalk. Jason glanced back once and was confused at the overwhelming rage he had felt to fight them.

He was glad the girl stopped him. Jason wasn’t sure if he would have killed them or not. He couldn’t help but wonder if being summoned was causing him to become more aggressive, but he pushed the thought away. Those were just scum bags and deserved his anger.

“The name’s Jason Storgan, by the way.”

  “Katie Brown.”

Jason tossed the bolt cutters to the side. “Brown, the name sounds familiar.”

“It’s a common name.” Katie said as she glanced at the bolt cutters he tossed away. “So, what’s up with the handcuffs?”

“It’s a long story, and I doubt you would even believe me.”

  “Try me.” Katie said.

As they walked, Jason began to explain what had happened. Starting with his girlfriend leaving, to being summoned by a squirrel.

Saying everything out loud helped Jason feel better. Though Katie looked at him with skepticism..

“Thats a lot to believe.” She said as she stopped walking. “This is me, by the way.”

Jason hadn’t even paid much attention to where he was. A little white run-down house sat next to several others.

“Well, Jason, thanks for walking me home. You can have my number if you would like.”

“I actually have no idea where my phone is.” Jason said while smiling and rubbing the back of his head.

“Well, look me up on social media. I feel as though I owe you a cup of coffee. It was nice meeting you, and thanks again for saving me from those guys.”

“Any time. Though you should probably not walk alone at night.”

“I normally don’t work nights, but gotta take what I can get.”

Jason stared at Katie as she walked into her house. “What an interesting day.” Jason said as he began walking towards his apartment. Luckily, it wasn’t all that far away.

Yelling and screaming had Jason turn around. He was standing inside of Katie’s door before he realized what he had done. Katie was lying on the floor and an older man was standing over her.

“Who the fuck are you?” The man said as he stepped over Katie and towards him. The man was obviously drunk.

  “Dad no, he saved me.”

  “Saved you? From what?”

  “From being raped.” Katie said.

The man scoffed, “you should have just let it happen. It may have taught her to respect her elders.”

“Alright, that’s enough.” Jason said, eyes hard. “Come on, Katie let’s leave.”

Katie stood up and looked between Jason and her dad.

“Leave. She’s not going anywhere with you!”

Katie moved to go towards Jason when her dad slapped her to the ground. “You will obey!”

Jason grabbed the man by his shirt, picked him up, and threw him onto the couch across the room. Jason looked at his hands for a moment before he looked back at Katie.

  “Let’s go.”
