Nightmare 42: Stacked Roster

So Healerguy can you dispel those rumors you spread about me?

“Nope! Only an old injury that didn’t quite heal well. You need to visit a healer more often.” He said as he fixed my side that hadn’t healed perfectly.

Kyle seemed to be fine. “What are you looking at?”

Heh, you look weird, all grown up.

“Picking a fight again, eh? I will kick your ass!”

You will get vaporized before you can even touch me!

“Oh, want to give it a go?”

Both of us got zapped by Healerguy. “No fighting in the sickbay! Agnis when are you going to address those curses on you? And Kyle your brother has been worried sick about you!”

Oh, shit that’s right you had a brother! Your such a shitty brother leaving him behind!

“Hey not my fault! You said that dragons were a pain to deal with but… I severely underestimated what that meant…”

Heh told you so! Get rekt Toxic Donkey.

Io gave us the ‘peace’ sign. “My family was a bit extreme but we’re official now!”

A human and a dragon. Good luck. Better work fast Io, is that a gray hair I see on Kyle?

Toxic Donkey showed a brief sign of panic. “Huh what?! Probably because you stress me the fuck out!”

Healerguy shook his head. “I can’t believe I was worried about you two for a second. You’re in a good enough condition to go on this quest, also Kyle… You’re still C-rank, the vice president wants to talk to you.”

“Ugh, I will get to it, someday. How about this guy? Is he legendary rank yet?” Toxic Donkey said, trying to escape the topic.

“Agnis is still A-rank. The vice president wants to talk to him too.”

Toxic Donkey gave me a look showing understanding. “I see so you’ve been running too.”

  Yeah, life is hard…

Healerguy got up. “Either way, this will be a tough request but I want you guys to keep a low profile on the boat. A lot of skilled adventurers have applied for this quest because there is a rumor that there is a dungeon on that island. One similar to the Nightmare dungeon in the Zanyr desert.”

Toxic Donkey looked at me. “I have heard some things about this Nightmare dungeon, it sounds similar to the things Io told me.”

Uhh, I have no idea what you’re talking about!

“Interesting, can you tell me about it later Io? Either way we have a lot of troublemakers on the boat, I first got interested when I saw that both of you had accepted the quest and applied too but I had been asked afterward to go with some Golden Angels because there might be a need. Giana was unavailable unfortunately but she really wishes to see you.” Healerguy said as he gave me an annoying smile.

“Oh what is this Agnis? Did you finally get a girlfriend? What happened to Thalia by the way?”

Giana isn’t my girlfriend and Thalia has been missing for almost 7 years… I couldn’t find her.

“Oh… I guess you’re busy. I will give it a try after we finish this quest.”

Thank you. I have my hands full yeah… I can tell you where her trail ended but it’s old and I’m not sure you can get there.

“Let’s deal with that later. So, we have to make sure those adventurers don’t sink the boat?”

Healerguy shook his head while he did a checkup on Toxic Donkey. “No, the only ones that can reliably sink the boat are you two so that’s why I’m asking you 2 to keep it down.”

  Easy!

“Easy he says I’m sure you’ve already destroyed a city or country or two haha!” I looked away and Toxic Donkey stopped laughing. “Wait that was a joke, why are you silent!?”

So, we need to behave? I can do that.

We returned to port; it was quite busy now. I instantly noticed a lot of strong adventurers some I had seen in the recordings of people that got destroyed by my dungeon. What makes them think that this dungeon will be easier?

I spotted the first team to beat Boshi town which must be getting cocky. While my dungeon can be lethal its intention isn’t to kill. Real dungeons however will kill. Healerguy went to do Healerguy things and harass the other adventurers. It was just Kyle Io and me standing to the side.

Ok Kyle I need to fess up. That Nightmare dungeon, I made it but it’s intention is to wear down and annoy, not kill. These adventurers, some of them have cleared the first floor or gotten far and are getting cocky. Real dungeons have the intent to kill. We might have to babysit them.

“I knew it! And I see... Io we’re checking the Nightmare dungeon out after this!”

“Yes!” Io said while sniffing me. I didn’t bother hiding my ‘rain smell’ so I suppose she was sniffing that.

Make it interesting Toxic Donkey, all the other teams were boring. At least make me laugh if you can’t beat the first stage!

“Pff, I will clear it easily and shove the results in your face.”

I will be looking forward to your failure.

“So, jokes aside, you think that none of these people realize the real danger of dungeons?” Toxic Donkey said with a serious face.

Did Io tell you about when I fought a Demigod?

“She did and I remember it now. Is it that much of a threat?”

Well, I had a dungeon that summoned a god to kill me so… perhaps. We might get lucky and it could be an easy dungeon.

“But going in with that assumption will surely get us killed, gotcha I will stay vigilant. You heard that Io?”

Io fried a passing seagull and started to snack on it. “Nothing can stop us if the three of us work together!”

The fox, the dragon and the donkey, eh?

“Want to turn into a dead fox?”

You want Io to retell your life story?

  “You’re an asshole!”

We boarded the boat and the atmosphere was shitty. All these adventurers were in competition with each other and the ambience reflected that. I wanted to find an excuse to get a large space to myself but this was an actual boat and not a floating coffin.

If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

“Wow this is wild! Look at all these strong adventurers!” Wild fang said as he walked up to us. He was snacking again. His other arm was holding on to a lot of food and he shared it with us. We sat against the railing of the ship and snacked.

Someone ran up on the deck with the news that food had mysteriously disappeared. People ignored us because it was known that I had a dimensional box, so the food we were eating was most likely from the dimensional box and not stolen.

Toxic Donkey shook his head. “Are these guys idiots? We’re eating their food and they think someone else did it?”

  I have a dimensional box.

I took it out and pulled some food from it and distributed it. The other adventurers saw this and reconfirmed that it wasn’t us who stole the food.

“Your food is wildly more tasty than what they have.”

It’s food from all over the continent.

The ship left. Sunny clear skies, the water was relatively calm. What could possibly go wrong? Probably everything. I would be surprised if nothing goes wrong.

It didnt take long for ome adventurers to start a fight.

“How immature.” Toxic Dnkey said. I looked at him in his silly donkey suit and nodded.

  Indeed…

“I want to join in too!” Io said as she ran ran at the fighting adventurers and joined in. it took her 20 seconds to kick the ass of almost everyone in the fight.

  How weak…

  “Indeed…”

Wild fang went over to Io and challenged her. “Wow she is wild! Hey Red Dragon! Fight me!”

So Healerguy was afraid that the two of us would do something like this?

“It seems so, this ship would be toast if we did. I guess I agree with Healerguy.”

  But what about Io though?

  “Oh shit! Io stop!”

Io was kicking Wild Fang’s ass and the deck was almost irreparably damaged. She did stop so the ship was saved. Healerguy didnt like this and started to drag Wild Fang away. “Wait! That was wild but I’m fine!” Healerguy didn’t care and continued dragging him to the sickbay below deck.

Having so many ‘strong’ people here might actually be a bad idea, they will just have their egos clash.

“I am actually wondering if they realize they’re not strong at all.”

Hmm they probably don’t, I would love to show you the recordings of their dungeon runs but I will be showing you spoilers.

“That’s what you’re worried about? Come on show me!” Toxic Donkey tried to grab my tablet when the ship shook and a sea monster appeared.

All the adventurers came into action trying to be the first one to slay it.

  “What a bunch of idiots.”

Hey Kyle, nobody is watching the food now.

“It seems you still have assassin tendencies. Let’s sneak in and take just a bit.”

While the idiot adventurers were fighting sea monsters Toxic Donkey and Io and I raided the kitchen. We returned back to our spots and enjoyed our loot and shared some with Io.

They sure take long. You should try that beef jerky

“Ugh, this beer is disgusting, hand me that bread. They’re not only slow but they’re sloppy”

“Hey Kyle! Want to taste my meat?!” Io said as she pushed a large drumstick into Toxic Donkey’s mouth causing him to almost choke. Toxic Donkey technically choked on a dragons ‘meat’.

The ship was rocking because the adventurers weren’t keeping the sea monsters in check properly.

Hmm stealing this food wasn’t a great idea, its mediocre.

We chucked the food we didn’t like overboard which attracted more sea monsters but that wasn’t exactly our problem. Toxic Donkey coughed after freeing his windpipe of meat. “What do you know about this island? I didn’t read the details.”

I didn’t read it either. We will see in 3 days.

Toxic Donkey, Io and I spent the rest of the day trying to identify which adventurer was what. We found 2 that would probably betray us in some shape or form but most fell into the category that just wanted to make a name for themselves somehow. I did spot someone that I recognized.

It was uhh what was his name? Sendy? Sandy? The guy that won the Sichar Tournament. He was here too. I somehow got a bad feeling. My bad feelings aren’t far off often.

Hey Toxic Donkey. So, this boat has a lot of big names or promising people on it right?

  “Yah”

What would be the chance that someone or something gathered us up to get rid of all of us in one go?

“Oh… that is a possibility. Hmm. Assassin time?”

I nodded. Both of us sent out shadow clones. “What the? Your clones disappeared! It’s better than my stealth!”

It’s a skill that I made, it’s called [Fade] I can’t teach it to you sorry it leans heavy in illusion and spatiotemporal magic.

“They’re still here, aren’t they?” I nodded. “So, there is also a possibility that the quest giver is responsible for that plan.”

Possibly, do you know who it is?

  “Nope, didn’t read.”

  Useless donkey!

  “You don’t know it either!”

Pointing fingers isn’t going to improve this situation.

“Remind me that I still need to kick your ass.” We spent the night and the next day trying to find anything suspicious and it started to look like my bad feeling is incorrect.

“Say Agnis, I’m getting a bad feeling. We found absolutely nothing. This is a good thing normally but it looked… as if someone went out of his way to make sure there was nothing to find.”

Hmm I must have missed that but this ship is suspiciously clean yeah, who even cleans this ship have you seen anyone clean this ship? I don’t sense any magic and wasn’t the ship damaged on day 1? Who repaired it?

“I…I don’t know… none of my clones have seen anything.”

So, we both came to the conclusion that the absence of something fishy makes this situation even worse.

“Never a boring day with you, eh?”

I could take a break, is what I want to say but I just took a 5-month break. Is there any chance you know any boat magic?

“What is that supposed to be?”

Magic that creates a boat or ship just like that.

“Aren’t you just making things up now? And No I can’t create boats out of nothing…”

I guess I should add ‘creating boat magic’ to my to do list. Anyway! I think the best solution is to get on a different ship! But that’s obviously not possible right now.

“Let’s hope that nothing will happen…”

“Ohh Agnis! Do you know dragon magic?!” Io said while energetically jumping around.

  No Io, I’m not a dragon so I don’t know dragon magic…

  “Oh…”

  Nothing happened on day 2.
