Chapter 377 - A Much Shorter Skill Entry

Jason recenters and focuses on how the poison and venom are being resisted. As he had previously seen, there wasn’t all that much of a difference. Now, though, he can tell that while the process is the same, the skill is treating them differently.

Of course, this would have been true no matter what. He had different levels of resistance to the two in the first place. Besides that, the method of removal was different. To take care of the poison, the skill was focusing on large concentrations first. On the other hand, when it came to the venom the skill instead was trying to pen it in.

Interesting responses that point towards the skill being used against environmental hazards instead of other sapient races. After all, venom tends to come as a bite or sting with a heavy dose in one or two specific locations. Not always, sure, but often enough that a strategy of containment would generally be a good passive response.

Poison tends to take a different approach. Even when in the form of an ingested poison, it would be the whole stomach absorbing the stuff. More environmental poisons would cover even wider areas such as the lungs or all of a person’s skin. You aren’t going to be able to contain that so instead it is much better to make sure that any higher concentrations of the stuff gets broken up so the body’s natural response can have a better chance of handling things.

While Jason appreciated the work that must have gone into fine tuning the process, he didn’t need it. In fact, the way the skill worked might have been negatively affecting his own body’s ability to handle the stuff. After all, targeting specific parts of a flesh body would cause his body to act like a flesh body.

Jason, now certain of the source of the problem, zooms in even more. He was still missing one small piece of information, how the skill actually worked. On a macro-level, he understood using his Energy to flush out the bad. Run enough of the right power through anything and it will fry, but the skill had the passive side which wasn’t taking such a brute force approach.

Though, as the answer became clear, he felt like taking that statement back. His threads were basically just detecting when something was damaging them in some way and violently fraying for a moment. It wasn’t perfect, but it didn’t have to be.

Whenever the poison or venom was detected, the nearby lines would whip out threads to chop apart the intruder. How it was being so strategic about it was likely more of a function of trained reflexes that got passed along with the skill, more than anything else. This was perfect for what he wanted.

Sure, Jason wasn’t certain how the original skill worked with a flesh and blood body, but he didn’t need to know. And sure, the lines in his body weren’t actually truly his yet, but he didn’t need that either. No, with the knowledge of how it was working in hand, he just needed to change things.

A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

A simple task for a cultivator. While he didn’t have the perfect control of his body that the System had originally given him with his cultivation technique. That didn’t change the amount of control he was able to take over the involuntary reactions that others wouldn’t. So, with about as much effort as someone would put into holding their breath, he stops the skill from working.

The System did not like that. Passive skills were supposed to be passive, something it could just offload to automation. Not only did Jason enjoy the fact he could almost feel the frustration, but it also meant the next step would go smoother as the System actively reached for a solution.

A solution that Jason planned to provide. So, with a simple bit of intent, he allows his lines to start dealing with the poison and venom again. Except, of course, this time it would all be treated equally, yes, even alcohol.

The System grabs onto this new arrangement easily enough. After all, more than a few other resistance skills work similarly. Though Jason can feel that despite it being happy enough to change things, it still left a kicker to the whole deal. He has a clue to what the System did to the skill, of course, but can also feel that it should overall be stronger at the moment.

Not that he has to feel all that much. The remaining venom and poison in his body are being processed a lot quicker than before, even after taking into account the new change. So for the second time in such a short period, Jason pulls up the skill.

  {Energetic Poison and Venom Resistance

One of the rare active skill based resistances. While still able to passively provide benefits, this skill really shines when directly used. Beyond that, the skill has been changed to treat all venom and poison the same. So while the nuance has been lost and percentages harder to increase, this variant has become more suited for its current user.

  Apprentice Level 1 - 0.00%

  Rarity: Variant

  Type: Passive/Active, Energy, Adaptive

  Effects:

  • Willful Purge - Able to send charges of Energy through the body to break down poison and venom in the body

  •

  • Mundane Poison & Venom Resistances -

  •

    • Trash rank - Immunity

    •
    • Low Normal rank - 11%

    •
    • Normal rank - 7%}

    •

Jason stares at the screen for a moment, “Huh, didn’t know you could have a rarity of just ‘variant’. I thought that was just a modifier.”

Unknown to Jason, receiving a rarity of just “variant” is all that rare when first creating said variant. The System simply lacks the ability to instantly judge how rare it will be and so leaves that for later. Though this interesting quirk of the System can only hold his attention so long before he moves onto more interesting points.

The rank up from initiate to apprentice and the merging of all the resistances into one category. It does call out it being for mundane poisons and venoms so clearly this isn’t the end of Jason’s struggles with getting the skill to work how he wants it, but at least it kept his immunity he had gained to trash rank paralysis poisons and spread it around to all trash rank poison and venom.
