"There! See?" I said as I pointed at the tractor trailer that was still sitting in the middle of the intersection. Then I gestured towards Cassandra Underwood and the family she'd rescued as I continued, "Like I've been telling you all along, that girl is a Goddess! She saved those people with her magic!"
The police woman looked a lot less sure of herself as she stared at her colleague that was now standing on top of the back of the eighteen wheeler. The man looked very pale and uneasy, because just a second earlier he'd been arguing with the teenaged Goddess next to the wrecked passenger car. Only it seemed like the Goddess finally had enough of the guy because she teleported him a few dozen meters away and a couple meters up, and left him on top of the trailer.
The constable's eyes shifted back towards the middle aged couple, the tiny three-tailed foxgirl, and the brunette Goddess. Then she stifled a gasp as Cassandra and the people she was with all suddenly vanished in another swirl of glowing light. They'd all just teleported away in front of a few dozen police, fire and ambunce workers. Not to mention countless other witnesses.
"Now do you believe me?" I asked the shocked young woman in front of me.
Police Constable McIntosh was supposed to be taking my witness statement. Instead it felt more like she'd spent the st twenty minutes questioning every other word I told her and arguing with me about the existence of magic. And honestly I'd had just about enough.
I tried to be a good citizen. I called 911 and reported the accident. When the police arrived I told them I was a witness. From what I could see though, they weren't actually interested in hearing the truth. They just wanted a believable story they could write on their reports, and maybe a scapegoat they could bme for the accident and the disruption it was causing to the town's busiest intersection.
It felt like I'd been stuck there for at least an hour already, and all I really wanted to do was get home to my girlfriend. My car was still dead though, and while there were a couple tow trucks standing by they were there for the accident vehicles. A ft-bed truck was waiting for authorization to pick up the destroyed sedan, while a huge commercial tow truck had arrived to collect the eighteen wheeler.
Even if I could get a tow it would probably take ages to get home, due to the traffic being backed up for a dozen kilometres in every direction. In fact it'd probably be faster to just leave my Jeep where it was and walk home.
"That's not possible," the police woman finally mumbled. Then she turned to stare at her colleague who was still stranded on top of the truck trailer.
A couple firemen were moving a dder up to the truck so they could get the other cop down, and it was clear from the stunned looks on most of the emergency service people's faces that they were having trouble coming to terms with the btant demonstration of magic they'd just witnessed.
"You saw it with your own eyes!" I insisted. "I know you saw all four of them teleport away too, after the Goddess deposited your coworker ontop of the truck trailer. If that's not magic then what do you call it?"
The constable slowly shook her head, then finally turned back to face me again. She opened her mouth to say something else, but before she could get another word out my phone's ringtone suddenly started pying.
"I have to take this," I told her after gncing at the screen. It was my girlfriend, and I knew she was probably beside herself with worry because I was so te and hadn't had a chance to even text her or anything.
I swiped the screen then apologized immediately, "Jenna I'm so sorry! I know I should have called or texted, I promise I didn't forget about you!"
"Ok Vikki," she responded, and from her tone I could tell she wasn't too upset after all. "Was it another work thing? You ended up back at the office, instead of coming home like you said?"
I grimaced, "You know I wouldn't do that. Not again. Not without letting you know."
"There was a car accident," I sighed, but that's as far as I got.
The line went dead as my girlfriend appeared right next to me in a little explosion of pink and purple flower petals. The cop let out a yelp and stumbled backwards a few paces as Jenna threw her arms around me and pulled me into a tight hug.
"Vikki are you ok?!" she cried out. "Please tell me you're not hurt! What happened? Did someone hit you? You should have called me right away! I would have been here immediately if I'd known!"
I held her just as tightly as I tried to calm her down, "It's ok Jenna, I'm fine. I promise. I wasn't involved in the accident, but it happened in front of me. So I called 911 then I had to stay as a witness."
"You're absolutely sure you're ok?" she asked as she looked at me with wide anxious eyes.
"Positive," I replied. "Maybe a little shaken up by everything I saw, but I'm fine."
I gave her a kiss before adding, "I was just talking with this police woman here, trying to give her my statement."
It was hard not to smile at the way the cop was still staring at my girlfriend like she might bite or something. I managed to keep a straight face though as I did the introductions, "This is Police Constable McIntosh. And officer, this is my girlfriend Jenna."
The cop gave us both a wary look, then her eyes drifted over to my Jeep and she frowned. "Where were you hiding? Did you witness the accident? Why didn't you show yourself until now?"
I suppressed a groan as I almost face-palmed. "Jenna wasn't in the car! She just appeared out of thin air a minute ago, and I know you saw that happen!"
"It wasn't thin air," my girlfriend protested. She sounded almost confused as she continued, "There were flower petals! Weren't there? There's usually flower petals. And I wasn't hiding. I was with my friends, in our secret basement casino and games room."
I nearly face-palmed again when Jenna mentioned the secret casino stuff in front of the police woman, especially when I saw how the cop reacted to that.
Meanwhile my genie was still talking, although her expression had already shifted from confusion to worry. "Ember and Ashley are probably wondering where I went. Or how I vanished, since they don't know I can teleport. Or um, they didn't know before, but they probably do now. We were all pying cards, but Pinky was winning again so I took a break and called you? I was getting tired of losing to her."
"I thought you said you weren't going to py cards with Pinky anymore," I asked in a pointed tone. "You know that pony's got crazy good luck. I'd almost think she cheats, the way she keeps beating you."
My girlfriend cringed, "Ashley and Ember wanted to py. And I didn't bet money or the house this time, we were just pying for pretzel sticks."
"Hold on!" the cop stated as she tried to take control of the conversation. "What's all this about illegal gambling?"
I sighed, "Nobody said anything about gambling, illegal or otherwise."
Jenna nodded, "That's right! I haven't had anything to do with illegal gambling in months. Not since that nice man from the Lottery and Gaming Commission came by the house to talk to me about the Professional Piglet Racing League."
"Wait what?!" I demanded as I gave my girlfriend a hard look.
"Oops," Jenna cringed again. "Can you maybe please pretend you didn't hear that? It was supposed to be my and Pinky's little secret."
The police woman looked and sounded even more uptight than I felt as she stated, "That's it! I want some straight answers, and I want them now! Otherwise I'm going to have to take you two in, and we can discuss this illegal gambling parlour of yours at the station."
At that point I couldn't hold back any further. I face-palmed, then let out a long deep sigh while my girlfriend started arguing with the cop.
"What? No!" Jenna insisted. "We can't go with you tonight! I have to get home to make sure my friends haven't lost all their pretzel sticks to Pinky. And Vikki needs to come home now too, she's almost an hour te."
My girlfriend's tone became friendly again as she told the police woman, "Normally I'd invite you to join us, but this is Friday and Vikki and I always do fun girlfriend stuff on Friday nights. But if you'd like to try your hand at cards with Pinky or py with the slot machines you can always come over and visit tomorrow?"
My hand stayed firmly pnted over my face for the next minute or two while the situation in front of me continued on a steep downward trajectory.
It wasn't quite like listening to an argument, since Jenna wasn't the least bit angry. Actually it was more like watching a couple people trying to communicate in two different nguages. The constable would raise her voice or sound impatient as she demanded more information, then my girlfriend would seemingly misunderstand and respond with some new non-sequitur that left the other woman even more frustrated.
I knew Jenna mostly meant well, and she was mostly a good person. But she was also naive, frequently over-shared, occasionally liked to goof around, and had the power to change reality. Meanwhile officer McIntosh was probably tired, definitely stressed, and she'd already had her sense of reality challenged three or four times today.
So while I was willing to give the police woman the benefit of the doubt at first, at the end of the day she was still a cop. And once she decided that Jenna wasn't respecting her authority the constable resorted to threats and intimidation.
"I've had just about enough of this," the cop gred at my girlfriend. "I'm asking you simple questions, why won't you give me any straight answers?!"
My girlfriend responded in a mock-serious tone, "I can't give you 'straight' answers because I'm profoundly gay. Maybe you could try and rephrase your questions so they're a little more queer?"
"Alright that's it!" the police woman half-shouted as she finally lost her temper. "One more word out of you and I'll book you for obstruction along with the illegal gambling charges!"
Jenna pouted as she looked to me, "This must be what my friends mean when they say ACAB. Vikki may I please turn this annoying person into a newt?"
The cop's eyes widened as she took a step backwards. Then she gave me a worried look and asked, "She can't really do that, can she?"
"I thought you didn't believe in magic?" I responded with a bit of snark in my tone. Then I slipped an arm around my girlfriend and pulled her into a side-hug as I told her, "Please don't turn anyone into a newt, love. You know how I feel about that."
"Can we go home then?" she asked as she leaned her head against my shoulder.
I sighed, "I'd love to go home, but my car died and I don't know why."
"If the engine hadn't quit on me I might have been the one to get hit by that truck," I added softly as I held her a little tighter.
Between calling 911 then talking with the police I hadn't really had a chance to process those emotions yet. And from the way I felt Jenna tense up as she looked towards the mangled car in the intersection, I had a feeling my girlfriend was going to be just as shocked about that strange bit of luck.
"Are the other people ok?" she half-whispered as she wrapped her arms around me and held me tight again.
I hugged her back and nodded, "They're ok. There was a little three-tailed foxgirl in the back seat who wasn't even hurt. The couple in the front seat... They probably weren't doing so good. But that demon goddess appeared and rescued them. She used her magic and suddenly the couple were good as new."
"She's here?!" Jenna gasped as she twisted me around so we were both facing away from intersection, as if she was trying to hide herself behind me.
"Don't worry love," I shook my head, "She's gone. She and the people she saved all vanished before you got here."
My girlfriend let out a sigh of relief as she rexed.
"Phew! That was a close call," she announced with a grimace. Then she gave me a pleading look as she asked again, "Can we just go home now? Please Vikki?"
Constable McIntosh had been quiet for a bit, probably still worried about the threat of being turned into a newt. She spoke up again at that point though, "Hold on! I haven't finished talking to you two yet. You don't go until I give you permission!"
Jenna gred at the police woman, then fshed me a mischievous grin and half whispered, "The newt option's still on the table, right? ACAN!"
Before I could question that she added with a smirk. "All Cops Are Newts?"
That caught me so off-guard I actually had to suppress a giggle. I couldn't help smiling though as I shook my head. Meanwhile the police woman looked nervous again, and she took another step backwards.
I gestured towards my Jeep and said, "I'd love to go home with you right now love, but my car's still dead. Unless you can use your magic to fix it? Although I have a feeling it's going to take us a while to get back, the way the traffic's all backed up."
"How about I just teleport us then?" she offered with a hopeful smile. "The car too. Then we can worry about fixing it ter."
I gnced at the cop, who was watching us warily from a few paces away. Then I gave my girlfriend a kiss and nodded, "Ok Jenna. Let's go home."
"Thanks Vikki," she smiled. Then my beautiful genie leaned closer for another kiss.
As our lips met the police woman and accident scene and the intersection with its backed up traffic and noises all vanished in a big explosion of lesbian pride coloured flower petals.
