Chapter 3: Howl of the Dire Wolves

The Forest Dire Wolves, their eyes burning with predatory hunger, emerged from the undergrowth. They were larger than any wolf Elara had ever seen, their fur a dark, mottled grey, their teeth long and sharp. They moved with a fluid grace, their bodies low to the ground, circling her slowly.

"Okay, wolves," Elara said, her voice surprisingly steady, "I'm not exactly in the mood for a snack right now. How about we all just go our separate ways?"

The wolves responded with a chorus of growls, their hot breath misting in the cool air. They lunged, their movements synchronized, a blur of teeth and claws.

Elara, despite her bravado, knew she was outmatched. Two level 10 wolves against a level 2 anomaly? Not exactly fair odds. She focused, summoning her energy sword, the familiar weight grounding her.

She dodged the first wolf's attack, the creature's claws slashing through the air where she had just been. The second wolf snapped at her leg, and she barely managed to jump back, feeling the wind of its passing teeth.

"Alright, time to get creative," she muttered, activating "Identify" on the wolves.

"Sensitive snouts, huh?" Elara grinned. "Alright, let's see how much you like this."

She reached into her pocket dimension, summoning a small vial of a pungent, spicy concoction she'd made back on Earth for deterring particularly persistent squirrels. It was a mix of cayenne pepper, garlic, and a few other secret ingredients.

"Alright, doggies," she said, uncorking the vial, "time for some nose-tingling fun."

She threw the contents of the vial into the air, creating a cloud of spicy mist. The wolves, caught in the cloud, immediately began to sneeze and cough, their sensitive snouts twitching.

"Achoo! Achoo!" Elara mimicked, dodging their clumsy lunges. "How do you like that, huh? Feeling a little spicy?"

The wolves, their eyes watering, continued to snap and growl, but their attacks were less coordinated, less ferocious. Elara saw her chance. She focused on her "Monster Taming" ability, a risky move, but she was running out of options.

[Monster Taming (Chance of Success: Low)]

"Low chance? Great," Elara muttered, "but it's worth a shot."

She focused on the larger of the two wolves, the one that seemed to be the alpha. She projected an image of herself, not as a threat, but as a source of safety and security. She imagined petting it, feeding it, scratching it behind the ears.

The wolf paused, its sneezing subsiding slightly. It looked at Elara, its red eyes narrowed, but there was a flicker of confusion in them.

"Come on, big guy," Elara said, her voice soft and soothing, "it's okay. I'm not going to hurt you."

The second wolf, still coughing and sneezing, snapped at the alpha, trying to regain its attention. But the alpha remained focused on Elara.

Slowly, hesitantly, the wolf lowered its head. It took a step towards Elara, then another. The second wolf, sensing a shift in the power dynamic, backed away, whimpering softly.

Elara held her breath, not daring to move. The alpha wolf reached her, its snout twitching, its hot breath ruffling her hair. She slowly reached out her hand, offering it to the wolf.

The wolf sniffed her hand, then licked it. Its tongue was rough, but the gesture was surprisingly gentle.

"Well, I'll be," Elara said, a grin spreading across her face. "Looks like someone's made a new friend."

The alpha wolf nudged her hand with its snout, then turned and growled at the second wolf, which immediately lay down, its tail tucked between its legs.

"Alright, big guy," Elara said, scratching the wolf behind the ears, "what should I call you? Hmm… how about Fang?"

Fang, the wolf, let out a soft whine, its tail wagging tentatively.

"Fang it is," Elara said. "Now, how about we get out of here, huh?"

She climbed onto Fang's back, feeling a thrill of excitement. Fang, surprisingly, seemed used to being ridden. He took off at a run, his powerful legs carrying them swiftly through the forest.

As they rode, Elara couldn't help but smile. She had tamed a level 10 dire wolf. Not bad for a level 2 dimensional anomaly.
