The Fourth Shot

The bartender wipes down the windows in the bar at the edge of meaning. The bartender looks out to see a dog walk by its bar. The dog is made of dreams and it's looking for its owner. The dog doesn’t realize that its owners are inside, getting hammered. The dog isn’t worried however, for it will get new owners soon.

The dog continues walking as the patrons call for another round of drinks. The bartender glances back before turning back around, noting that their drinks have already been poured.

The goddess of the soul grabs a shot of logic and the god of the material grabs a shot of emotion. The god turns to the goddess to ask her a question.

“What do you think the meaning of life is?”

She simply raises her glass, “To drink!”

  He shrugs.

And they take the fourth shot-

They slam their glasses into the bar top, or at least they try to. The glass fumbles out of the gods hand, and the goddess slams so hard that the bar top cracks. The bartender suddenly appears in front of them and starts cleaning the shattered glass on the bar.

The goddess tilts her head at the bartender, “Hey, what do you think the meaning of life is?”

The bartender shakes its head and points to its name tag. The god and goddess squint their eyes at the tag, only to make nothing out from their blurry vision.

  Stolen novel; please report.

  The god pulls back, “Huh…”

The goddess turns to her god, “Did you find an answer?”

  “No, but I’m hungry.”

The goddess frowns. “That isn’t really a satisfying answer.”

The god scratches his chin. “Well, if you really want an answer… The meaning of life is the meaning you give it.”

She shakes her head. “That's esoteric and dumb! I want a real answer!”

He frowns at that. “Where do you think you are right now?”

“At a bar at the edge of meaning. We’re celebrating! That was established at the beginning!”

He quickly shakes his head. “Maybe we should switch topics.”

“Agreed, we’re getting too close to the fourth wall.”

The god sighs at that, “Anyway, when I asked, what the meaning of life is. I meant what people should do with their lives.”

The goddess blinks, “Well, whatever they want of course.”

The god leans over the bar top. “Of course, that isn’t a satisfying answer either. I don’t think that there will ever be a satisfying answer.”

The goddess lays her head next to her god. “That kind of meaning needs to be found, and isn’t inherit to life. Take that mouse from earlier as example, that mouse had a fulfilling life, and yet it had no purpose.”

The god tilts his head to meet her gaze. “That- answer still isn’t satisfying, but I think I can accept that.”

They both raise their heads and she elbows his shoulder. “Not bad, if I do say so myself.”

He groans, “Just as long as you don’t get meta again.”
