Ch. 3 – The right door

  *Edward's POV

When my csses were over, Beth was nowhere to be found. "Absolutely no." Getting in my car together with Alice and Jasper, I learned that Beth would have to leave the orphanage by Friday and Alice was suggesting to invite her to live with us.

"I already saw her as a part of our family. If we leave her homeless though..." She trailed off and I saw a different vision py out in her head.

This time there was Beth alone somewhere in the dark. She was crying and had a razor in her hand. I smmed on the brakes. "No!"

"She doesn't have anyone and I've seen her py with that idea before. If we leave her alone, she'll eventually kill herself..." Said Alice in a small voice.

"What? We can't let her do that!" Said Jasper. For some reason he cared about her. I saw that they were together before she left the school early. However, he was making sure to not think of whatever they were doing or talking about, except for her asking him to keep it to himself, making me frown.

I didn't like either of the options but Alice's vision if we don't help Beth was clear and not that far in the future so it left me no choice. "We have to talk to Carlisle first and I know for a fact that Rosalie will cause trouble." I told them as I started driving again. "There's no need to worry about Carlisle." Thought Alice, smiling. She was right. I knew that with how compassionate he was, he wouldn't be against it. What worried me, was Rosalie.

Once Carlisle arrived home that night, I called for a family meeting. "Are you out of your fucking mind?!" Screamed Rosalie the moment I proposed to let Beth move in with us after I told them about how she'll be homeless by Friday. Emmett was fruitlessly trying to calm her while Carlisle pondered whether it was a good idea when she doesn't know about us yet.

"If she stays alone, Elizabeth will soon take her own life." Spoke up Alice which was followed by a long silence. Rosalie thought about her own human life and how it ended. To my displeasure, she came to the same conclusion as back then. She wanted to die. "Then let her." Said Rosalie eventually, making me growl.

"No." Said Carlisle. Thinking that if she's my mate, she'd join us one way or another anyway. "We won't turn our backs on her when she needs us."

"And what do you expect from us? To act human even at home?!" Yelled Rosalie again.

"I know it won't be easy, but at least for as long as it will be necessary, yes." Stated Carlisle and it was decided. I shot a look at Alice. She was already thinking about decorating her room. Then she grinned at me and went to make it a reality while I went to find Beth. She should be already asleep by now.

  *Elizabeth's POV

Only one more night in bed... Crossed my mind when I woke up on Thursday morning. With a heavy heart I got ready for school and hopped on my bike. At least two more days I can spend with Cullens. I tried to cheer myself up. Most of them were nice to me. Even if for a brief time, I was blessed enough to find a true friend in Jasper and I found that I liked spending time with Edward a lot. He was easy-going and we'd talk all the time. When I arrived at school I saw Jasper and Alice wave at me in greeting, smiling as they went ahead while Edward waited for me.

  "Hey." I smiled at him.

"Hey." He smiled back and as we started walking, he took my hand in his, causing me to look at him again. "Is it ok?" I liked him and I probably wouldn't be able to spend much more time with him so I allowed myself to be happy for a moment and with a smile I lightly squeezed his hand.

After I bought lunch, I started walking towards the table where we sat with Edward the past two days but he put his arm around my waist and gently pulled me towards his siblings. "We want to talk to you about something." He said, causing me to look over to their table. Only to find everyone except for Rosalie smiling at me.

"Ok." I replied and went along, curious what they wanted.

I sat next to Jasper because I didn't want to sit next to Rosalie. "Good to see you Ell." Grinned Jasper at me.

"Hi Elizabeth." Greeted me Alice cheerfully and I couldn't help but grin back at them. Rosalie stood up and left.

Watching her retreating figure with a frown, I felt a hand on my shoulder. "Don't worry about it." Said Jasper and then I felt completely at ease.

"Thank you." Grateful, I smiled at him. "So, uhh what you guys wanted to tell me?" I looked curiously at the faces around the table.

"Welcome to the family, Ell." Said Emmett, using the same nickname Jasper was calling me and grinning as he stood up, he went after Rosalie. Confused I looked around at the rest of them.

"I umm... told them that you don't have anywhere to go." Started Jasper slowly, making me look at him in shock. Why?

"We would like to offer you to move into our house." Finished Edward.

What? My head snapped towards him. I just bnkly stared at him. "What did you just say?" I was sure I heard him wrong.

"We would love for you to move in with us." Chimed in Alice, still smiling.

I must have been dreaming. Looking around the table again, I couldn't believe that it was real but they were all smiling, expecting my answer. "Are you for real?"

"Yes." Spoke up Edward once more, taking a hold of my hand. "We already spoke to our adoptive father and he agreed. Since you have nowhere else to go, we want you to live with us."

The slightly cold touch of his hand couldn't have been a dream. I still blinked a few times to make sure. "Thank you..." I felt tears well up in my eyes and Edward pulled me in an embrace. It felt nice. There were people that actually cared about me.

"You can pack today and I'll pick you and your things up tomorrow afternoon." Offered Edward when I pulled away from his embrace and happy, I kissed him on the cheek.

  *

Both days went by like water while I was still hesitant to believe that it was happening. However, here I was. Standing at the entrance of Cullen's house next to Edward. House... It was more like a mansion than just a house. "Come on in." He encouraged me and I took the hand he reached out to me.

"Amazing." I breathed out looking around myself. It was spacious. All the expensive looking furniture and the pce was overall luxuriously decorated in clean and modern style, including a lot of wood. I felt like Alice in Wondernd.

"Yes, amazing." I heard Edward's quiet voice and turned to him. He was looking at me in a way that made me blush.

"I was talking about the house." I giggled.

"I know. I wasn't." He said and caressed my cheek. "Let me show you your room." Once we got upstairs, we passed a few different doors until Edward stopped in front of one and opened it. "Alice decorated it for you."

There was a small dark brown wooden night table next to a queen-sized bed with huge blossoms of crimson roses on a dark background decorating the covers and a fluffy looking, deep red, heart-shaped pillow that was accompanied by a few smaller bck cushions. A huge window looked like an enormous poster of the deep green forest outside of the house, behind a transparent white curtain. There was a desk with a pc and two doors next to it. One led to a bathroom decorated in white and bck marble and the second door was a closet. Walking in the closet, I just stood there, stunned, looking at the space that was bigger than my room at the orphanage. "This... This is too much." I managed to find my voice.

"No. It's all yours now." Said Edward.

"Welcome home!" Appeared Alice in the door to the now my room, followed by Jasper. I still expected to wake up at the orphanage and find out, it was all a dream. Jasper held Alice around her waist and was smiling at me. "All in this room is for you, Elizabeth. And I took the liberty of preparing some clothes too. Feel free to wear anything you like. Happy birthday by the way." Grinned Alice.

My eyes widened. "Some?" I looked back into the closet. It was full. "This is crazy Alice!"

She ughed with her melodic ugh and singing: "You're welcome." she danced away, pulling Jasper along.

"Thank you!" I called after them, still stunned.

Edward's arms curled around my waist, making my heart beat faster as I looked into his heated eyes. "I hope you can be happy here." I heard him say before his lips met mine and I found myself returning his kiss before slowly pulling away. I can't... I like him, but... this can't work.

Edward smiled at me. "I'll let you get settled in." And then he left me standing there with my bags and a loud beating of my heart.

I didn't have many things to unpack but the evening came fast, when Alice showed up in my room again. "Are you hungry? I was eating out with Jasper tonight and thought you'd like a pizza. Want some?" She asked with a box in her hands.

I was starving. "Omg, I don't remember the st time I had a pizza! Thank you Alice. You're the best!" This girl somehow knew what I liked without me ever telling her. She was like my personal fairy and I had to ugh.

When I finished my pizza, I went to explore a little. Alice told me to go and get familiar with the house since I'd be living here. Edward must have told her that I can get lost on a one way street and embarrassed I went to slowly discover the wondernd that was to be my new home. Everything was beautiful, just like the Cullens themselves.

Then I came across a library where there was a painting of four men, that had caught my eye. Two dark-haired and one blond man with long hair had strange red eyes and then there was another blond man next to them. His hair was short and his eyes looked golden like were those of the Cullens I had met. Could he be reted to them?

Even in the painting, he looked like he didn't want to be there. Although the slight discomfort dispyed on his painfully handsome face did nothing to diminish how breathtaking he was. Before I realized what I was doing I traced the cheek of the man in the painting with my fingertips as if to ease his worries. There came a chuckle from behind me. With a start I turned to find Jasper standing there. Leaning on the doorframe, he had folded arms and a smirk on his lips. "That's Carlisle. Dr. Carlisle Cullen, our adoptive father. He works te today so you'll probably won't meet him until tomorrow." He informed me.

Not sure what he felt from me while I was admiring his 'father' in the painting, I felt my face heat up with embarrassment. Jasper just chuckled again. "I'll be sure to tell him you liked his painting." He teased me and I got a little anxious before a familiar calm washed over me and Jasper patted my head. "Don't worry, just kidding." He winked at me and left me alone again.

Carlisle... His name was as beautiful as the man himself. Crossed my mind as I looked up at the painting once more and I shook my head to push anymore thoughts of him aside. Done with my little exploration I got ready for bed and ying down in my new, incredibly soft and comfortable bed I quickly fell asleep.

Unsure what woke me up, I sat on my bed. It was still a deep night and the house was quiet. I was thirsty and not fully awake. So used to having to go to the orphanage kitchen for a drink, I forgot that now I had my very own bathroom. Quietly leaving my room so as to not disturb anyone else, I walked slowly through the moonlit hall. Thanks to the amount of gss walls and big windows I didn't need to turn on any light as the nearly full moon from outside provided me with enough lighting to walk through the hall and around the kitchen without bumping into anything.

Kitchen was at the other end of the long hall from my room. I found it easily and, surprisingly enough, I also found a way back to my room after quenching my thirst. At least, I thought I did. The moon shone from the other side of the house. My room was darker than the hall. Suddenly I tripped over something. I was certain I didn't leave anything lying on the floor between my door and the bed. I braced myself for the impact of my fall. But I found myself in a slightly cold embrace instead and gasped in surprise, understanding what had happened. "Oh no, I got the wrong door!"

"You must be Elizabeth..." Said a gentle voice above my head. The way the man said my name made my knees feel weak. I never heard his voice before but it must have been one of the Cullens which meant...

"Carlisle..." Escaped me as I looked up. The room was dark but just barely, I could make out the outlines of his handsome face. Then I realized what I said. "I-I'm... sorry Dr. Cullen. I-I didn't mean to barge into your room." I apologized as I pulled away from him. Very reluctantly, I took a step back. His embrace felt so safe and once I was released from it, I missed his arms around me.

What is wrong with me?! I scolded myself and with a loud drumming of my heart, I ran out of his room. Somehow, the next door I opened were the correct ones and I smmed them behind myself a little harder than was necessary. It took me a while to fall asleep again. The thought of Carlisle's arms around my body never leaving my mind.
