Chapter 8 - Adapting

A few hours went by, and I managed to gather bits and pieces of information. For one, our races were known as mythical beings thought to be extinct. Another revelation was that the average levels in this world were surprisingly low; commoners, meaning everyday people, usually ranged between level 5 and 15. Adventurers were typically level 20 to 40 on average, with only old veterans reaching the 50s. Babies started at level 0, meaning everyone began their journey from there. The world record was held by a party known as the Five Fangs, who were said to be in their 70s. Revealing our true levels and races would undoubtedly cause massive panic.

Fortunately, when it came to our races, there was an option known as "Demi-humans," which, as the name implies, were individuals who were half-human and half-something else. Apparently, interspecies marriages were quite common in this world, resulting in many unknown races. When we were called back to the registry, we made sure to correct our applications, listing our race as Demi-human and our levels as being in the 30-40 range to avoid suspicion. Once we were done, we were shown to a nearby inn called the “Buckson Dinner and Inn,” where we decided to stay the night.

In our room, we became concerned about cash and began brainstorming solutions. That's when Overon had an idea.

"Hey Deserter," Overon began, sitting on the edge of the bed, "we need to figure out our money situation. We can't exactly work regular jobs or go on low-level quests forever."

"You're right," I replied, pacing the small room. "But what can we do? We can't reveal our true levels or identities."

Overon grinned. "Remember our dimensional storage skill? It has all our stuff from the game, including our money. We just need to figure out how to access it here."

"Dimensional storage... I hadn't thought of that," I said, rubbing my chin. "It’s worth a try. Let’s see if we can open it."

You could be reading stolen content. Head to the original site for the genuine story.

We both closed our eyes and concentrated, trying to summon the familiar interface from the game. After a few moments of focusing, I felt a subtle shift in the air. I opened my eyes to see a small, glowing portal hovering in front of us.

"Looks like it worked," Overon said, reaching into the portal. He pulled out a handful of coins, which shimmered and transformed into the local currency right before our eyes.

"Convenient," I said, examining the coins. "It seems our game money automatically converts into this world's coinage. This means we’re loaded."

Overon chuckled. "Yeah, we had millions in the game. We should be set for a while. But we need to be careful about how we use it. Flashing too much wealth could attract unwanted attention."

"Agreed," I nodded. "And we still have to conceal our true identities. Our races and levels would cause chaos if anyone found out. We're not just high-level; we're practically gods compared to the people here."

Overon leaned back against the wall, his expression thoughtful. "We’ll need to stay low-key and blend in. Use our power only when absolutely necessary. And we must keep refining our control."

"Right," I said. "We should focus on gathering more information about this world and its power structure. The Adventurer's Guild is a good start, but we’ll need to explore other places too."

Overon nodded. "Let’s also keep practicing our skills. We might be overpowered, but if we can't control our abilities, we’re just as vulnerable as anyone else."

"Exactly," I agreed. "Let's take it one step at a time. For now, we have enough money to get by. Tomorrow, we'll visit the Adventurer's Guild and see what opportunities we can find. Maybe even sign up for a few quests to build our reputation without raising suspicion."

"Sounds like a plan," Overon said, his usual grin returning. "Now, let’s get some rest. We’ve got a lot to do tomorrow."

With that, we settled in for the night, feeling a bit more prepared for the challenges ahead. Our journey in this new world was just beginning, and we had to stay vigilant, adapt, and above all, keep our true nature hidden.
