Chapter 2.4

Opening his eyes, Sullivan found himself in the desolation of what once was a great city. All around him hungry flames consumed the rubble of the formerly populous metropolis while smoke billowed into the hazy orange of an otherworldly sky. Upon closer inspection of the debris, poking out from beneath it were the shards of bone. Sullivan traipsed through the city, overwhelmed by this grim scene of the apocalypse.

'Where am I? This has to be a nightmare." Sullivan reassured himself.

Suddenly, a bright flash of light from behind made Sullivan wheel around. He turned just in time to see a dimentional rift opening. From a vertical surface of pure light, a skeletal hand streched out; a skeleton with glowing, red eyes followed the hand. As the skeleton took a moment to evaluate its surroundings, it focused in on Sullivan and began ambling towards him. From the dimensional rift another skeleton emerged.

Sullivan, with no weapons or combat experience to speak of, did what felt natural and was most shrewd: he fled. Unfortunately for Sullivan, the skeletons could run too, and soon a horde of them were trailing behind him.

Perched atop a building, a man watched this scene play out and laughed. Rising to his feet, he decided to also follow Sullivan from the rooftops.

"Ha ha, what are you, some kind of comedian. Just handle those small fries already." Echoed the man's voice from above.

Sullivan, descrying the figure flitting from rooftop to rooftop, fumed with indignation.

"Easy for you to say when you're all the way up there!" Sullivan yelled.

This only caused the man to chuckle. "A funnyman in the apocalypse, who would have thunk it."

Sullivan was now absolutely incensed and began cursing at the man, until he tripped on some rubble and then went violently tumbling across the hard, jagged, uneven, concrete-hunk bestrewn ground.

"Save me!" Sullivan screamed in desperation as the group of skeletons closed in on him.

'Hey, wait a minute, it doesn't look like this guy is faking it.' The man thought to himself.

Within a split second the man had leapt down from the building top and with a single slash of his blade, annihilated the army of skeletons. The man then turned to Sullivan and found the teen still sprawled on the ground, covered in cuts and bruises from his fall.

"You really weren't kidding..." The man mumbled to himself.
