Book I: Awakening – Summary

Tristan Anorox, half-elf child of a minor noble family of dragonslayers, was sent on a mission to hunt down a fairy dragon. This fairy dragon had insulted the king by dropping a chamber pot on his head and stealing a symbol of office the royal scepter.

After chasing down the creature for two years, Tristan finally caught her. But she finished using her unique ability and teleported them both. Traveling to the Fey Realm, his Human heritage was shoved aside in favor of his Elven half – effectively turning him into a full-blooded Elf.

He met The Matriarch, the oldest and most powerful of the fairy dragons, and Realm Protector of that place. She told him of the truth of his heritage, that he was a Winterbloom Elf. The bloodline of the Elvish ladies and lords who ruled the Fey Realm in eras past, before their Great Exodus which saw the entire heritage leaving the place behind to save it.

Just being there caused Tristan to form an essence crucible, a means to perform magical spells, also called essence weaving. Given the very fairy dragon he was hunting as a companion – a mischievous female of that species named Felicity – he returned to the Mortal Realm with a few items of artifice.

Traveling the land and helping people as he could on his return to the kingdom of Bhant, Tristan learned spells from Felicity and fought The Black Company – mercenaries hired to supplement the kingdom’s military forces. Alternating between traveling through the day and spending his nights in the Fey Realm, Tristan eventually arrived back home.

The Anorox family estate was decimated. Tristan’s mother, slain. The household annihilated. After putting his mother to rest in the Fey Realm, he began investigating. Learning of his family’s move to their lodgings in the capital, he ventured into the city of Bhant’s Holdfast to investigate further.

Finding a diviner, he was able to discern some information about the assassins, but more money would be required. And so, returning to the Fey Realm, he learned about imbuing potions to make them into elixirs, and returned to the capital to sell those supplies to the Pathfinder Company.

Now flush with money, he met a more powerful diviner who promised, in exchange for elixirs, to not only provide spell primers to help Tristan learn essence-weaving, but also to perform the requested divination. Going to make more of the elixirs and then returning, Tristan found the diviner being killed by an assassin. Engaging the foe in a fight, he slew them only for their body to turn to dust, leaving behind a cloak and dagger.

Taking the items to the king, Tristan put himself at the mercy of the monarch – returning the scepter and completing his mission. After earning himself the king’s favor, Tristan spoke to Archon Grimtome, a powerful essence-weaver, who figured out Tristan’s illusory disguises were hiding something beneath. After learning more of Tristan’s plight, he encouraged the young dragonslayer to remain in the capital.

Going to his family’s townhouse, Tristan found a letter from his grandfather, Hurvun, confirming many of his conclusions regarding the family’s affairs. Meeting with the staff and guards, Tristan performed some errands before returning for a nice meal. The whole dinner party was poisoned, and Tristan fought off three assassins, suffering a mortal wound.

Felicity used supplies he had bought to create a potion, and with the last of his strength, Tristan imbued the potion with essence to create an elixir and was saved from the brink of demise. Running to the Archon, he was able to explain the situation and was given the Archon’s favor – a device that would let the man communicate with him sporadically.

Then, his father, Fawkes Anorox, returned from a dragon hunt. Father and son confronted one another, and Tristan announced his full Elven heritage, leaving the capital behind to spend time in the Fey Realm to train. During this time, Felicity stayed in the Mortal Realm, gathering information as much as she could.

Tristan trained with The Matriarch, crafted items of artifice, learned new spells for essence-weaving, and learned more of his heritage’s culture. However, his time training came to a rapid conclusion as the Elemental Realm of Fire created a rift – an Incursion into the Fey Realm. Joining The Matriarch and the other fairy dragons, Tristan fought off goblins coming through the rift before blocking it off, channeling the very essence of the Realm into himself.

After holding the rift, he confronted the fire dragon leading the hostile force. Fighting it with all the skills imparted to him through his grandfather’s training, Tristan decimated the beast before consuming its essence crucible – unlocking a new spell type – and drinking its blood.

After a bit longer in the Fey Realm, he returned to the Mortal Realm. The Archon and Felicity informed him that all Winterbloom blooded half-breeds in the capital had been slain; even those with the tiniest traces of the heritage which were not manifested. Tristan also learned of his grandfather’s return, and so he traveled back to the Anorox estate.

After meeting his father briefly, he reconnected with Hurvun and the two went on a dragon hunt; spending evenings in the Fey Realm bonding, and the days traveling. During that time, Hurvun instructed Tristan verbally in many hidden secrets of dragonslaying – even bits of knowledge that none but the old man knew of.

After meeting one of his grandfather’s old traveling companions, the two entered the Gredo Expanse and saved some half-breed Broxtar who took refuge inside of the Fey Realm. The two dragonslayers encountered a demonic dragon, fought the beast, and slew it – unlocking another spell type for Tristan, and drinking its blood.

The two traveled back to the kingdom of Bhant and were ambushed by assassins sent to kill Tristan by his father. Tristan was given a special symbol for his family crest by Hurvun – a black star that marked the bearer as the true heir of the family.

Upon returning to their home, Hurvun was grievously injured by Fawkes, and Tristan slew the man who fathered him in revenge for his father-figure. Fleeing into the night, Tristan was contacted by Grimtome. The man informed Tristan that Gisele, his half-sister, had used political maneuvering to pin all the crimes on Tristan – regardless of the truth or what essence-weaving could reveal.

Tristan was banished from the kingdom. Leaving it behind, he fully embraced his heritage. No longer considering himself an Anorox, he acknowledges himself as a Winterbloom. As the rest of his bloodline lies decimated thanks to the assassins, Tristan is now the only one left to rule the Fey Realm. The last Winterbloom in existence.

The Last Lord of the Fey.
