Chapter 4 — “The Flags That Rise”

The morning sun broke over New Dawn, spilling light across the stone walls and newly humming defenses.

Beneath the soft morning mist, the fortress stood tall, alive with purpose.

Our town was no longer just a refuge.

  It was a message.

  We were here to stay.

It started with a distant rumble.

Jake, high atop the central turret platform, caught sight of them first.

He sounded the new alarm — a long, rolling clang from the newly installed Mana Bell.

  Everyone snapped into motion.

I rushed to the top of the west wall, Adam hot on my heels, bow already in hand.

Through the rising dust, we saw them:

A procession of banners — green and black — advancing across the open plains.

  And beneath the banners?

  People.

  • Hundreds.

  •
  • Well-armed.

  •
  • Well-armored.

  •

At their front rode a man on a massive, broad-shouldered beast — half reptile, half horse.

His armor gleamed obsidian black, etched with deep green runes. A crown of bone horns wrapped around his brow.

And floating above him, plain as day:

[Darius Vex — Level 18 — City Lord of Vexholm]

  A City Lord.

  Just like me.

They halted two hundred meters from our walls.

  Not attacking.

  Not yet.

I called down to Marcus, now our acting Sergeant-at-Arms.

"Bring the shield grid online — low power. Show them we’re ready, but don’t lock us down."

Marcus saluted sharply and sprinted toward the Mana Core chamber.

Moments later, a shimmering semi-transparent dome flared faintly over New Dawn — visible enough to warn them, but flexible enough to allow negotiation.

Darius Vex rode forward alone, raising one hand in a sign of parley.

  Jake scowled next to me.

"Bet he’s here to 'invite' us to join his little kingdom."

  Adam snorted.

  "Invite? More like annex."

  I exhaled slowly.

  "I'll hear him out."

  Because that's what leaders do.

Even when everything inside screamed trap.

We met outside the gates, halfway between our wall and their army.

Jake and Adam flanked me, wary but silent.

  Darius smiled as he dismounted.

He was taller than me by a head, with sharp angular features and cold, calculating green eyes.

"Greetings, fellow Lord," he said, voice smooth as oiled leather.

"I am Darius Vex, rightful ruler of Vexholm."

  I nodded cautiously.

"Hunter Vale. Lord of New Dawn."

  He spread his hands.

"I come with a proposal. Ally with us. Swear fealty. Together, we can carve out an empire from this savage land."

"And if we refuse?" I asked.

  His smile sharpened.

  "Refusal means... unfortunate consequences."

  I let the silence stretch.

Behind Darius, his troops shifted restlessly, armored boots clanking against the stone.

Behind me, Jake’s turrets swiveled slightly, targeting systems locking on.

Tension crackled like a live wire.

I stared Darius dead in the eye.

  "No."

  Simple.

  Final.

Darius’ smile didn’t falter — but the muscles around his jaw tightened.

"You’re making a mistake," he said softly.

"I don’t think so," I replied just as softly.

  "This world doesn’t need tyrants."

Jake stepped forward slightly, voice carrying.

"We built this city with blood and sweat. We defend it with our lives. If you want a war — come and get it."

Adam raised his bow lazily, one glowing Earth Arrow already nocked.

"If you think we’re easy pickings," he added, "you’re dead wrong."

For a long moment, the only sound was the distant cry of some bird of prey, circling far overhead.

Then Darius laughed, a deep, mocking sound.

  "Very well," he said.

He turned on his heel, mounting his beast.

"But remember, little lordlings — the flags that rise... must one day fall."

His army retreated — for now.

Back inside the walls, we called an emergency council.

Around the table sat the key players of New Dawn: Jake, Adam, Emily, Marcus, and a few of the new arrivals who had proved themselves.

I slammed my hand down on the map.

  "They’ll be back," I said.

"Maybe tomorrow. Maybe next month. But they’ll be back."

  Jake grinned grimly.

"Good. Let 'em come. We've got surprises waiting."

Adam nodded, checking his freshly enchanted arrows.

Emily set a crate on the table — inside were the first Mana Bombs she’d crafted from scavenged cores.

Marcus simply adjusted his sword belt and said, "Let them try."

I looked at them all and felt a fierce, wild pride.

We weren’t a group of survivors anymore.

  We were a city.

  A family.

And no one — not Darius, not anyone — was going to take that from us.

New Dawn stood at the edge of the storm.

The walls were reinforced, the turrets humming with a deadly energy, the traps in place.

But as the days passed, the unease in the air thickened like the humidity before a thunderstorm.

We knew Darius Vex was coming.

  The question was: when?

The first thing Jake did was upgrade the turrets.

The base Mana Turrets we'd initially built were good, but they weren't enough.

He got to work immediately, linking new Mana Conduits to each turret and installing Elemental Amplifiers into the core systems.

By the second day of his work, the turrets were glowing with a bright, dangerous energy. The hum of mana in the air was enough to make the hairs on your arms stand up.

?? [New Structure Unlocked: Elemental Turrets]

  • Fire Turret (Deals burn damage over time)

  •
  • Ice Turret (Slows enemies and deals frost damage)

  •
  • Lightning Turret (Chain lightning damage, AoE)

  •

"These babies will be perfect for crowd control," Jake muttered to himself, clearly in his element. "But we need more. More turrets. More defenses."

I stood by, watching as he worked, a little in awe.

Jake’s focus was absolute — his hands weaving mana strings with perfect precision. He’d already upgraded the Mana Wells, increasing the city’s overall power output, and was starting on a set of turret towers — giant arcane constructs capable of launching heavy bursts of mana at distant targets.

"Jake, you’re a mad genius," I said, shaking my head.

"I know," he replied without missing a beat, hammering in the last magical rune on a turret base.

  Adam had been busy too.

After Darius' visit, he’d become more quiet, more focused.

We’d trained with him, learning the basics of his Elemental Arrows, but now, he was crafting specialty arrows — designed for siege and boss-level enemies.

Adam’s tools were a makeshift blacksmith’s forge — basic but powerful.

He’d forged weapons from the Ravager Alpha’s bones, weapons that crackled with magic.

One by one, the arrows appeared:

  • Mana-Draining Arrows — Dark green shafts with a faint aura of magic. These would sap mana from enemy spellcasters.

  •
  • Earthquake Arrows — Heavy, stone-tipped bolts designed to explode on impact, shattering armor and breaking bones.

  •
  • Inferno Arrows — Fire-wreathed arrows that left a trail of burning destruction.

  •

I watched in silence as Adam finished the last of the arrows, each one glowing faintly in the low light of our camp.

"We’re ready," he said quietly, tapping his bow. "These will hold the line when they come."

Meanwhile, I’d been working on the Magical Traps — expanding the grids around New Dawn’s perimeter.

We had Forcefield Mines, Gravity Snares, and now Arcane Chain Traps — all linked to the Heartstone Core.

I spent hours weaving magic into the very fabric of the city, reinforcing the walls with barrier spells. Every time I set a trap or reinforced a section of the wall, a flood of XP surged through me — an intoxicating feeling of progress.

  [Achievement Unlocked: Arcane Engineer]

+5% Trap Durability, +10% Mana Efficiency for all city defenses.

By the time evening fell, New Dawn had expanded again — watchtowers, reinforced gates, and mana conduits lined the walls.

We had established a central Mana Core to keep the shield network running and distribute power to the turrets, traps, and magical wards.

New Dawn was no longer just a city.

  It was a fortress.

Two days after the last of the preparations were made, we received a System Warning:

  ?? [Siege Detected!]

City Under Attack by: Vexholm Army.

Darius Vex has begun his assault with siege beasts and ranged artillery.

Jake, Adam, Marcus, and I gathered quickly around the central table. The map was dotted with new markers — Vexholm Army, moving into the forest just beyond the open field.

"He’s not wasting time," I said, feeling my pulse quicken. "They’re coming now."

Jake gritted his teeth. "That’s fine. We’ve got the advantage. We can hold the line here."

"We need to make them bleed," Adam said, his voice low. "We can’t just sit here and wait."

"Agreed," I said, rising. "Let’s get ready. Full scale. No more playing nice."

The first artillery shell came just after dawn.

We didn’t see it coming — one of their Siege Beasts had launched a massive boulder, sending it flying over the forest and slamming into the western wall with terrifying force.

  BOOM!

The impact shook the entire city.

The wall buckled, splintering into shards of stone. A section of the shield flickered, barely holding.

I roared, grabbing my staff, activating the Mana Barrier.

  "DEFEND THE WALL!" I shouted.

Jake immediately triggered the Elemental Turrets — the fire turrets opened fire, hurling blasts of flame across the battlefield.

Adam’s Lightning Arrows crackled into the air, striking the Vexholm siege units with chain lightning.

I activated Barrier Runes along the western perimeter, raising a temporary shield of force that stopped the next barrage dead in its tracks.

  The battle had begun.

As the enemy approached, the Ravager Alpha’s corpse — the one we’d slain weeks ago — became something more.

  Ravagers.

Hundreds of them — mutated wolves, bone-armored and savage.

Darius Vex had brought them to fight for him.

At the center of the Vexholm forces, the Ravager Alpha’s bones glowed with an eerie red light. The beast had been corrupted by dark magic.

"Get ready!" I shouted, activating Arcane Chains. "We need to lock them down before they breach the gates!"

Jake activated Mana Cannons, launching concentrated blasts of energy across the battlefield.

Adam nocked an Earthquake Arrow, launching it straight at a pack of charging Ravagers.

  Boom!

The earth shattered beneath their feet, sending wolves flying.

  We fought hard.

  The turrets fired.

  The traps worked.

  But we lost ground.

Darius was relentless, sending wave after wave of beasts and soldiers.

By the time the sun sank below the horizon, we had pushed them back, but New Dawn was damaged. The western wall was shattered. The shield was weaker.

  The cost was high.

  We survived the first siege.

But I knew, deep down, this was only the beginning.

  Darius Vex would return.

And next time, we’d need to be stronger.
