Chapter 3: Meeting the team

The three of us sat together in silence. I sipped a cup of tea that the boy had made for me.

The girl sat across from me with her arms and legs crossed while she was eating a lollipop. Her stare was quite fierce.

Meanwhile, the boy was seated nervously in the armchair to our left, looking at me very frequently. At least he is wearing clothes.

After placing the cup on the table, I spoke in a calming voice, "My name is Xavier Edwards. Today I was supposed to die by execution, but instead, I was given the chance to become a Hunter. I'm not very talkative and prefer a quiet lifestyle, but that doesn't stop me from being a friendly person. So I trust that this partnership will be successful."

The boy who had been running around in his boxers, stood up and nervously offered his hand, "Um...It's-a pleasure to meet you...my name is Ren Okada. I was born here because both of my parents are hunters. And umm...I'm a bit pretty awkward around new people, but I hope we'll get along well." I shook his hand, and he sat back down, still looking anxious.

The girl stood up gracefully, twirling a strand of her hair, "My name is Gabrielle Elara, but you can call me Gabby. Like my friend, I was born in the Hunter Sanctuary. I'm generally a nice person and enjoy having fun, but if you irritate me, you'll find yourself on my bad side." she warned.

So a tomboy and a shy boy.

Rubbing the back of my head with a weak smile, "It's a pleasure. Would you guys mind showing me around?" I asked.

They exchanged glances before Gabrielle responded, "Sure, we have time to spare." Right after, Ren rose to his feet still a bit nervous.

Together all three of us went on a tour around the house.

We started in the kitchen, which was quite a mess, "Random question, but are you good at cooking? Because four-eyes over here can't cook to save our lives and as you can see, it's quite chaotic." Gabrielle remarked.

Ren adjusted his glasses while clearing his throat, "Actually I make decent meals here. It's only you who can't cook to save our lives." Ren muttered aloud to her comment.

In response, Gabrielle put him into a headlock, "Not in front of the new guy you dork." She said.

I interrupted their argument by clearing my throat, "During my time at my old job, I have learned how to cook many different styles of food. However, my specialty lies in chocolate desserts and cakes." I declared.

Both looked at me with a gleam of excitement in their eyes, "What type of chocolate desserts?" they asked in unison.

Looks like I caught their attention, "Chocolate pudding, chocolate chip and so much more." I noticed their mouths were watering.

"Let's continue this another time. Where are we headed next?" I asked.

The next stop was the pair of bathrooms, both had signs that indicated where we should go.

The first bathroom which had healthcare mainly for women and tons of hair products, "This is my bathroom and no one besides girls are allowed to enter." Said Gabrielle.

I must admit that it is very well organized and clean.

Upon entering the room next to it, I couldn't help but ask, "Are you serious?" My eyes scanned the quirky bathroom filled with anime posters, magazines, and a portable TV.

Both Gabrielle and I looked straight at Ren and said in unison, "Why is there a TV here?"

You might be reading a stolen copy. Visit Royal Road for the authentic version.

His face turned beet red, "Let's just go upstairs." He said as he speed-walked away.

We walked upstairs to where entered Gabrielle's room which was bright and colorful, filled with artwork, and tons of pictures of Rihanna, Kiko Mizuhara, and Pavel Nedved.

"Looks like we have a similar test in music artists. Which songs of Rihanna do you love?" I asked.

Gabrielle confidential crossed her arms with a smile on her face, "Unfaithful and Diamond." She said.

A smile cracked on my face knowing that there was a Rihanna fan, "S&M and Umbrella." I said confidentially.

She began to sing a song at first I didn't understand but it soon clicked in.

It was a song called What's a Man to Do. Immediately I sang along with her, "Looks like you and me might be good friends." As we both high-five each other.

After we started laughing, "Alright time for your room Ren." I said to which he seemed slightly embarrassed.

He nervously led us to his room which was plain and filled with geeky belongings. Like gaming consoles, figures, weapons models, and a training dummy.

I don't understand why he is embarrassed by what he has, "My older brother used to have similar stuff but was far more into sci-fi. So, I more or less feel comfortable here. What type of games do you have?" I asked.

Ren ran inside pickup three games from his collection and returned to me, "These are my favorite. Do want to play sometimes." he said eagerly.

A maidenless souls game, a real-life dating sim with a real Korean actress, and a monkey with a long pole.

I lightly giggle before showing off my smile, "Certainly, I'm a bit rusty, however don't go easy on me." I said as I rubbed his head and noticed a smile on his face.

"Aww is the dork blushing???" Gabrielle said in a mocking tone.

To which he loudly muttered, "Bitch."

Next thing I knew she tackled him to the ground, and they got into a fight.

I clapped my hands a few times to which they stopped fighting, "Now kids, I would like to visit my room now."

Next up was my bedroom which had basic items like a bed, a TV, a wardrobe, and so on.

I turned to the two and asked, "Is it okay if I get some alone time in this room?".

The pair nodded their heads, "Take all the time in the world." Said Gabrielle and soon later the two walked downstairs.

After closing the door behind me I walked to bed and just dropped down.

The demon appeared and for some reason, it stood close to me, "Xavierrrr!"

It's hard to believe that is my family, "Can I call you Lezian for the time being? It has your first name initials and it's easy to remember." They seem to not mind the name.

In fact, they started clapping with a terrifying smile that is most likely to give me nightmares.

"Alright, your new name is Lezian. Now I'm going to sleep for a bit. Please be friendly to them." I said to them as I slowly closed my eyes.

  (Two hours later)

I felt something gently shaking me awake and when I opened my eyes.

Lezian woke me up for some reason, and I pleaded, "Let me sleep a bit longer." In response, they wrapped their tail around my waist, pulled me out of bed, and placed me by the window.

I spotted Hinata outside the house. "She is already here?" I said to myself.

After a few stretches, I opened the window and called her out, "Hinata, hang on, I'm coming-" But as soon as she realized where I was, she disappeared from her spot and reappeared in my room.

She dressed a bit more casually today, "Alright let's go, Xavier." She takes her sword and cuts through the air again.

  "To where?" I asked

She replied with a soft giggle, "Shopping, we can't have you dressed like this." She stepped through the portal and waited for me.

I actually wanted to talk about something, so I followed her through. We arrived on a bridge, "How did it go?" She asked.

"They are odd little goofballs. They mentioned being born here. What is that about?" I ask.

Leaning against the railing, she turned to me and said, "Many hunters here eventually started a family, resulting in their children being born in this place. We call these children 'gifted.' The main difference is that they're not allowed to leave the sanctuary until they're sixteen and have achieved at least a C rank. This results in them being quite sheltered from Earth's culture, so they depend largely on their parents to educate them about the outside world." she elaborated.

"And what would happen if the parents decided to live somewhere outside the sanctuary?" I asked.

I felt a strong breeze blow as she kept her sight on me. Before coldly saying, "No one is allowed to leave the sanctuary unless it's a mission. Any other reason will result in your immediate execution."

We both stood there staring at each other. I was starting to understand the type of people that I got myself into, "Isn't that heartless?"

Hinata approached me with her arms folded and a smile on her face. "I was fully prepared to replace my teammate, someone I had known for two years, with someone who would be far more beneficial to the sanctuary. Every action we take is in the best interest of the sanctuary."

"Was I really the best choice?" I asked.

Hinata moved closer and wrapped her arms around my neck, "No, you were my best choice."
