Chapter 6. Shopping and the House of Healing.

Before Alex left the room, he quickly asked Scarlet about the currency rate, which seemed to be straight forward.

There’s copper, silver, gold and platinum. There's more coins after those 4 types apparently, but she said not to worry about them for the time being.

  100 copper =1 silver, 100 silver=1 gold, etc.

'That conversion rate in mind, I must be well off for the time being'

Exiting the room, Alex walked down stairs and found Grom the gnome seated at the table. He waited for him to finish with this latest client before stepping in.

“Excuse me grom, Scarlet asked me to give you this.”

“Eh?” Grom turned around, finding the note being handed to him.“Thank ya laddie.” He took it in hand and read over it. Nodding with a hum, he reached under the desk and pulled out a pencil and paper.

“I just need you to fill this out than hand it back. Nothing too fancy, just your name, combat class as well as Utility. There’s also no need to worry, we keep things confidential unless you state other wise.”

”Thank you.” Grom waited for him to fill out his name, class and then handed it back. He made sure to read it over, rose a brow and looked at Alex at seeing the two combat classes before turning around and stamping the paper and putting it in a pile before giving him a piece of paper.

“That there is a ticket to state that you’ve handed in your paper work. We need a bit of time to file the paper work and make you a proper guild badge. Come back in about two to three hours and hop back in line and we can get you sorted.”

Placing the ticket in his inventory, he bid Grom farewell and decided to hit up the town. He was feeling peckish for some proper food and the food district was calling his name.

There were a spattering of different foods like meat on a stick, baked goods or sandwiches, and he made sure to stock up, buying out one vendors current stock of seasoned meat on a stick for 9 silver, before heading into a bakery and buying freshly baked breads, pies and pastries for around 22 silver. Both sales people seemed very happy that he bought out their stock and with how good it was, he was sure he made out like a bandit.

Next up, he went out to buy some camping supplies. A special tent that could be placed in and out of his inventory pre set up with a number of enchantments such as temperature and insulation enchantments, a ward that helps hide the tent and keep monsters at bay as well as self cleaning and repair. Hell, it was so spacious he decided to get a proper bed to place inside instead of laying on a sleeping bag. He did buy three sleeping bags however, you never know.

The tent would have cost normally around 8 gold, but because no one even has such an amount for such a luxury item this early on, they sold it for half price. Besides that there was some cooking supplies like a campfire cooking station, seasonings, bowls, plates and utensils.

Next he went to check out some stores were you can buy and sell materials, only to leave disappointed. He wasn’t sure what to expect, there was no salvage tech like computers or electronics he could tinker nor the right materials. Even if he was to start making from scratch, he would need a proper set up, a designated work shop with specialized tools he would need to either make himself or get someone else to make.

Sure he has the money, but even then, would he want to remain here?

Next he needed a place to stay. There were some places he saw on the way here on the main district so he paid the one nearest to the guild a visit, only to find out that it was already booked out. He had no luck with that one but the second one he checked was promising.

It was a large Inn, the sweet old lady running it gave him a room on the second floor for the next 3 days for 50 copper a day, plus an extra 10 copper for breakfast and dinner for the three days, which really did hit home with how much money he currently has. He would have booked for longer, but he wasn’t planning on staying here too long.

Before Alex decided to go back to the adventures guild to see if Grom had his stuff ready, he decided to hit up the House of Healing.

The Inside the large building was a small reception area with two receptionists in a waiting room like you would find in a doctors or hospital. Alex got in line and waited for about 8 minutes before he was called to the receptionist on the left.

“Hello sir, what can I do for you today.”

”Hello,” He greeted. “I’m a healer, cleric, and would like to do some volunteer work.” The young Elven receptionist sat up straighter at hearing that.

“A cleric you say? We are understaffed when it comes to healers, before you start, you will need to be tested.”

This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.

“Alright. And just to clarify, I don’t wish to work here, I’m just offering some volunteer work.”

The receptionist sighed at hearing that.

“Are you sure?” He asked with a pleading tone. Alex nodded, causing the Receptionist to sag a little. “Very well. I’ll go get one of our local healers to over look your time here.” He got up from his seat and headed out back into the staff only door, half a minute later, another elf gentle man wearing white robes came out with him.

He looked at Alex before commenting. “You sure you’re a cleric?” Alex shrugged. His black leather outfit seemed to make it hard to believe. The man looked nonplussed but shrugged non the less as he walked out behind the reception area. “Follow me then…”

  ”Alex.” He nodded.

”Nice to meet you Alex, My name is Ewen.” He held the door open and allowed Alex in. It was a large room with curtain dividers, each cot held a person both young and old and Alex paused at seeing some children.

“This is the main healing ward.” Started Ewen. “I over look those who come in for healing and observation. The most severe cases come in through a side entrance into the emergency ward.”

‘Just like a hospital’ Mentally mused Alex

“Very well then, let us observe your healing skill. May I know what you are able to use?”

”I have Lay on hands and restore. I also have bless, but that seems irrelevant for the time being.” Nodding, Ewen had Alex approach a cot of a dwarf with some bloody bandages currently asleep.

“You are likely wondering why he hasn’t been healed.” Whispered Ewen. “Being understaffed, means our most prominent healers are in the emergency ward. Those with manageable wounds are treated properly before either remaining here for future treatment and observation or are discharged from the ward.”

Clearing his throat he gently shook the the dwarf who hastily jolted before groaning in pain.

“Sorry Mr Rahl, I just wanted to let you know we have a volunteer healer on hand and would like to ask you for permission if you would like to be healed.”

The gruff dwarf looked at Alex who was standing near Ewen. “You don’t look like no healer.”

”I have a healing class, don’t you worry.” Alex stated. Rahl looked skeptical but nodded all the same.

“Welp, if you’re a healer, I guess it wont hurt… It wont hurt will it?”

“It’s never hurt before.” Alex stated, before realizing he hadn’t actually used Lay on hands before. Causing Rahl to sigh.

“If its free, then sure go ahead.” The defeat in his tone actually amused Alex. He can’t blame him, he looks nothing like a healer.

“My skill is called Lay on hands. I have to actually touch you to heal you.” Alex explained. Rahl gave him permission once more and Alex placed a hand on his non injured shoulder. Golden light encapsulated his hand before healing energy transferred to Rahl. It only took two seconds, and 20 MP to heal the wide eyed dwarf.

For each pulse of heal, Alex noticed his Cleric gain an increment of EXP, It was as he surmised, his class would not only get experience from combat, but for healing and buffing.

“It doesn’t hurt no more.” Rumbled the dwarf with a relieved smile. Alex withdrew his hand as the dwarf started to check his range of movement.

“I just need to double check to make sure your are cleared before you are able to go.” Stated Ewen. The dwarf was more than pleased with the result and allowed Ewen to remove the bandages covering his chest, shoulder and arm. Pristine skin was revealed after the blood was cleaned up, showing no signs of wounds.

He exclaimed in shock and surprise after discovering that two of his missing fingers had grown back, causing Ewen to give him a surprised look.

“Thank you kindly mister healer.” The dwarf said as he shook Alex’s hand vigorously

“You just need to head to the receptionist and let them know you are better.” Explained Ewen, and Rahl was more than eager to escape the stuffy, sterile room. When he left Ewen turned to Alex

“You can regenerate limbs?” He asked with no concealed shock.

“I guess?” Alex shrugged. He knew he could recover limbs and organs due to his Racial skill, but to do so with others is an unexpected boon.

“Are you sure you can’t work here?” He asked earnestly, causing Alex to chuckle.

”I’m actually an adventurer, I’ve no qualms in coming over on my free time to heal.”

”How much mana did you use?”

“Only 20” The Elves jaw dropped.

”Only 20?!” He whisper shouted, keeping his voice down as to not disturb the other patients. “We need to get you into the emergency ward, you can do so much good for the ones there.” Ewen all but dragged Alex out of the room and towards the back of the building to the emergency ward.

‘Its surprising how much this house of healing reminds me of a modern day hospital’

“Ewen, what are you doing here?” Asked a receptionist upon seeing him drag Alex there.

“Hello Olly, this is Alex, a volunteer healer. His healing skills are top notch and he has magic to burn.” He stated before leaning in. “He can regrow limbs.” He whispered just loud enough for Olly to hear.

The wide eyed Olly looked at Alex in surprise. “Are you sure?” Ewen nodded.

”He managed to not only fully heal a patient but grew back two missing fingers with only 20 mana.”

  ”That’s-”

”Unbelievable?” Questioned Ewen. “I saw it with my own eyes.” He clarified. “Being a volunteer healer, I needed to make sure his skill was any good and it far exceeds my expectations.”

”This is good news!” Said Olly with relief. “I’ll get some helpers to show him around the ward.”

“I’ll leave him to your care.” Ewen bid Alex farewell and Olly had rushed out of the room to get someone to show him around.

  ___

Alex met some other healers in the emergency ward who looked beyond dead on their feet. They were more than happy to have a quick reprieve from their work with an additional healer. Thing was that with Alex’s high mana reserves and potent healing, he managed to heal every one in the ward in less than an hour. The most unique case would be healing a person with an eye patch. They had some grievous wounds due to a monster attack while they were fishing. The thing was however, the mans eye was an old injury and much to his surprise and elation, his eye grew back and he recovered his sight in it.

To say that Alex was the talk of the town was an understatement. Some other civilians and adventurers who were missing body parts or old age problems like arthritis, all but rushed to the ward for the what people are calling the miracle volunteer. Luckily, when Alex ran out of mana, they had some mana potions in stock, Which was when he learned about potion sickness.

You can’t have too many potions a day, other wise you get a debuff known as potion sickness. Drinking more when you have it puts a strain on the body which can lead to adverse affects. The other healers in the healers house were already exhausted and couldn’t drink any more for the next day or two, so Alex’s intervention was a blessing in on itself.

Alex left the house of healing after about 3 hours of work, and promised to be back during his free time, earning himself well wishes before heading to the adventurers guild. Thankfully, he didn’t garner too much attention there, but he did meet someone familiar.

“Hey! Mister healer, what are you doing here?” It was Rahl, he was dressed in some heavy armor. With a war hammer on his back and a mace on his hip.

“Oh hey Rahl. I’ve come to get my registration.” Stated Alex.

”You’re gonna be an adventurer?” He asked all to eagerly. “I take it you don’t have a team yet then?”

‘Ah, that’s why he seemed so eager.’ Alex thought with a mental chuckle.

“Have a team in mind.” Alex said with a grin.

“Sure! Come meet mine.” Alex couldn’t help but laugh at that.

”I’m not registered yet.” He told him.

“Right right, go get your badge and come see me. I’ll be seated on the table over there with my team.” Rahl pointed to a table consisting of four other people. Nodding Alex hopped in line.

Rahl seemed like a nice person and right now, Alex was feeling positive. It might be because of his work at the house of healing, seeing the good he did, just made him feel validated, like he was finally doing good in his once mediocre life.
