Chapter 18: Bait

  {Levi}

When I got to Ms. Terra's office she made sure to lock the door before we sat down. She looked highly disturbed about something.

I gave her a wary look. "Are you okay?"

She shook her head. "Nope. I'm not okay! Not okay at all! I was cleared to be able to tell you this because they feel you need to know what's being expected of Eve now. And I can't believe they're actually expecting this of her. You can't tell her about this though because it'll derail her training. Honestly at this point she'll need someone to lean on when shit hits the fan so to speak."

  I nodded. "Okay. I'm listening."

She took a deep breath and let it out. "Okay what's being expected of Eve now is a really huge responsibility! She's being expected to save the world."

I snorted and gave her a look of disbelief. "Seriously?"

Ms. Terra narrowed her eyes. "I'm not joking about this Levi!" She sighed, "From what I know of there's been different factions gearing up to go after the government for the cults that have been set up. And all of the factions are after Eve. Remember how I told you that Eve was mostly human?"

  I nodded.

"Well since she was born with the Demon Power technically she's half demon," Ms. Terra said. "Have you seen anything strange around Eve lately?"

I told her about what I saw happen to Eve last night and she gasped, "That's when I felt her sleepwalking! Shit! Yeah her Demon Power is back and I have a feeling it's here to stay now. But yeah at the moment Eve has a lot that's being expected of her. Like I said, don't tell Eve about this. It will derail her training. And yes, there's more than just the factions going after her but I can't tell you what at the moment."

"I see," I said. "So what can I do?"

"As I said before Eve will need someone to lean on when things get tough. I hope you're up for the challenge," Ms. Terra said.

I chuckled, "Yeah I'm ready for it. If I wasn't, I wouldn't have married her."

Ms. Terra raised an eyebrow. "Alright then, that's all I have to say for now."

As I got up to leave I noticed that she wanted to say something else but she decided against it. I backed out of the room as slowly as I possibly could and Ms. Terra chuckled when she saw that. "I know what you're trying to do Levi and it won't work unfortunately. Have a good day now."

With that, I left the room.

  {Eve}

It had been a week after I started training with Trainer Michael and I had been called into Mother Terra's office at Cornwall Security.

"Um, what's going on?" I asked.

"You're being sent out on an assignment," Mother Terra said. "There's an event coming up soon and a known mafia leader will be there along with his security. Along with several other targets the Elder's want taken down." She looked away and sighed, "I thought that you getting married to Levi would freeze your position as an Agent. And while it has frozen it and you'll stay an Agent until the Elder's figure out a way to get you to become an Assassin, you'll still go on missions as if you're an Assassin already."

"So basically I have the job of an Assassin but not officially then?" I asked.

Mother Terra nodded. "Exactly. However, with this event Levi will be going with you because it's a ball that you're going to."

I snorted. "Pffft! I'm going to a ball? Seriously?"

Mother Terra rolled her eyes. "Yes, yes I know but events like these are important to the High Society people because it's a good chance for them to do some networking for their businesses and whatnot. And for the women it's a good time for them to get caught up on whatever juicy gossip is going around in their social circles." She continued, "And it's a good way for you to make friends with some of these women. Here's a profile of a couple of the women I think you should approach."

She handed me four different files and in each file was a background story of women that I had seen in the tabloids before! They were all celebrities and the fact that Mother Terra wanted me to make friends with them was going to be a tall order. I'm not good with making friends with outsiders, especially ones who are judgmental because of their status in life. I can already tell that I'm going to have to bite my tongue throughout most of the event so that I don't embarrass Levi there.

  Mother Terra laughed.

I tilted my head. "What's so funny?"

"I can tell by the look on your face how daunting you might think this mission is but it's not as bad as it seems. Honestly the High Society ladies respect those in uniform," She said. "So don't think of this as a tall order. Think of this as an opportunity. A lot of targets that the Elder's want taken out are going to be there and with you dressed up looking like a million bucks so to speak they just might be more than willing to come out of the woodwork just to dance with a beautiful woman."

"So you're saying that I use my looks and my charm as bait for the targets?" I asked.

Mother Terra smiled and nodded. "Exactly."

I just about threw up in my mouth the thought of other men staring at me like Levi does.

"Don't worry my dear, you'll be the bell of the ball, and who knows? Maybe you'll actually have some fun for a change?" Mother Terra said.

I groaned, "I'll try to have fun but that's going to be difficult of course."

She rolled her eyes. "It will be fine. Now take these files home with you and read up on them. You're dismissed!"

  I nodded. "Yes ma'am!"

When I got home from work Eve came in an hour later and sat down on the couch in the living room after she took her suit jacket and tie off. She looked over when she heard me enter the room. "Hey dear, how was your day?"

I chuckled, "My day was fine. I pretty much sat behind the computer getting caught up on paperwork. How's your training coming along?"

She shrugged. "It's good I guess? I don't know what Trainer Michael's looking for but hey at least I can lift semi-trucks on my shoulders as if they were sacks of potatoes!"

My jaw dropped and I gave her a look of disbelief but then I quickly composed myself.

She looked up at me and chuckled. "You seem to be having your jaw on the floor a lot lately when it comes down to me."

"I can't help it!" I said, "I've never met a woman like you before, every woman I've dated before wasn't an active soldier. They were mostly concerned about their image and having sex a lot."

"Yeah I just found out we're going to a ball this weekend," Eve said.

I nodded. "Yes I was going to tell you about that tonight. You don't seem too happy about that. I understand those things are boring as hell."

"Yeah that's what I figured but I'm going with you as your wife of course," Eve said. "Plus, it would be a good way for me to make friends who aren't Agents for a change."

"Well that's a good way of looking at it," I said. "Let's see the balls on Saturday so I think you should take a break from your training and go shopping with Mom tomorrow."

Eve groaned, "As much as I don't like the idea of doing that I'll go."

I reached over and kissed her. When I broke the kiss I hugged her tightly. She snuggled into my arms and let out a contented sigh, "You know this is nice, really nice. I'm going to try and enjoy the slower moments of my life as much as possible now. Because I have a feeling that after this things won't be slowing down for a while."

I nodded as I still held her in my arms. Little did I know how right Eve was about things not slowing down for her.

  ***

Saturday finally came and when Eve came down the stairs she looked stunning! She was wearing a red dress and the skirt came just a little bit below the knees. Her black hair was let down in waves and she had light makeup on. She had the smoky eye look for her makeup this time and she was wearing wedges that had a small heel on them. She had a clutch purse with a gold chain in her hand.

I whistled, "Wow! You look amazing!"

She smiled. "Thank you. But honestly, I feel a little bit exposed in this dress."

"Probably you're not comfortable wearing a dress like this on a regular basis. You did tend to wear more dresses that were more on the business side of dressing. It's nice seeing not wearing a uniform all the time for once," I said. I held out my hand and she took it. "We should go, my lady! Our ride is waiting for us."

Eve giggled, "Of course it is, we don't want to be late now do we?"

We headed over to the limo that would be taking us to the ball and got in. Once we went up the stairs to the building we were greeted by a hostess who showed us to a VIP area where we took our seats.

I noticed the way some of the men who were in our area were staring at Eve and I didn't like it. The men were giving her the 'I'm undressing you with my eyes' look. The women in our area were either admiring Eve or giving her looks of envy.

"Darling, Levi!" I heard a familiar voice say, "It's so good to see you again!"

I looked up and tried to keep my composure as I saw one of my ex-girlfriends whose name was Aria walking up to me. She smiled at me and then her smile grew wider when she saw Eve.

Great, I wonder what she wants? If she thinks she's going to get close to Eve just to get back to me yeah that's not going to happen! This is what I get for being a playboy before I got engaged to Rachel and before I married Eve! I thought.

"It's nice to see you too," I said. "How have you been?"

I thought Eve might be jealous about watching me talk to another woman she wasn't. I looked to see Eve giving me a rather amused look.

"I've been good. As a matter of fact, I just got married last week!" Aria said. "And I thought I'd just come over to say hi to your new wife!" She turned to Eve and Eve stood up to greet her.

Aria held out her hand and Eve shook it. They both sat down and Aria sat to the right of Eve and I sat down to the left of her. Eve surprised me about how relaxed she became talking to Aria. She talked to her as if they were long lost friends.

"So she's the new Mrs. Harriman huh?" Someone asked.

  I paused. "Huh?"

A young man about my age had sat down next to me. He was wearing a three piece blue suit complete with black dress shoes, a white button up shirt underneath the suit jacket and a black tie.

The man smiled at me. "It's so nice to see that my wife can make friends so easily. Your wife is beautiful! You sure know how to pick 'em!"

"Yeah, I'm glad Evelyn was able to make it to this event with how crazy her job can get and everything," I said.

"Oh I guess I should introduce myself. My name is Devon Lochart," He held out his hand and I shook it. "But just call me Devon."

"Sure, just call me Levi," I said.

Devon nodded. "Okay sure. So what's it like to be married to a soldier?"

"It's interesting," I said. "She's an active soldier right now so there's still a chance she'll have to go out on missions and stuff like that."

  "I see," Devon said.

Eve tapped me on the shoulder and I looked at her. "What's up?"

"I need to step out for a little bit. I'll be back," Eve said.

  I nodded. "Sure."

Eve left and about ten minutes later was when I heard gunshots and the alarm system for the building went off.

  ***

  {Eve}

I surprised myself as I was actually having fun talking to Aria. She asked me simple questions like what's my favorite color and she asked me what it was like to be a soldier and stuff like that. It wasn't until one of the waiters came by with a tray that had a couple of champagne glasses. He handed one to me along with a napkin underneath it.

When he left I felt a card tucked inside the napkin. On the card was a short message on it:

The Mafia leader named Sam Frank is here. Pretend you're going to the bathroom, get Sam's attention and take him out.

That's when I tapped Levi on the shoulder and told him I needed to go to the bathroom. I did walk down the hallway to where the bathrooms were when I heard someone shout, "Well if it isn't Mrs. Harriman! I thought you would be here."

I spun around and saw the exact person I was targeting. Sam Frank was giving me a menacing smile. "You know you shouldn't step out of a party without your husband. Just in case stuff like this happens. You're a soldier but you don't look so tough. I doubt you've ever been in a battle! Capturing you will be a piece of cake!"

I smirked. "Rule number one in combat, don't ever underestimate your opponent!"

Sam Frank rolled his eyes. "Where have I heard that line before?"

I looked behind me when I heard footsteps and now it was time for me to roll my eyes. "Seriously? And here I thought you said capturing me would be a piece of cake!"

In total Sam Frank had brought three guys with him in order to capture me. Sam Frank stood back and let his goons take the lead. The little bastard even had the nerve to smoke a cigarette while his goons fought me.

One of his goons decided to take the first punch that I blocked effortlessly. I managed to dodge the other two goons who decided to throw punches and kicks by using the first goon who's fist that I still had in my hand as a shield. I tossed the first guy aside and blocked another punch that was aimed at my stomach. I managed to block another kick that was aimed at my face.

As the fight went on I couldn't help but think that these guys were the dumbest fighters ever because they were coming at me at full strength right off the bat. I knew they were going to slow down soon and they did run out of steam. Once they ran out of steam I was able to take out at least two of them no problem. Before I faced the last goon, gunshots were fired. I looked up and smirked when I saw Sam Frank seething in anger.

"What's the matter?" I taunted, "And here I thought capturing me was going to be a piece of cake! What, did you signal the rest of your hive to come help complete the job their Don should've done?"

"Oh, so you know I'm a mafia leader huh?" Sam Frank said, "Do you know what mafia leader's do to someone who kills their men?"

That's when the last goon standing took a swing at me and I caught and twisted the guy's arm behind his back and slammed him down on the ground. The guy screamed and I stepped on his back and tugged on his arm until I heard a snapping noise.

I smirked. "So what do you do when someone breaks one of your men's arms? I guess you just stand there and watch, don't you?"

"You little bitch!" Sam Frank snarled. He pointed his gun at me and said, "Let. Him. Go!"

"Or you'll do what?" I said. I paused for a moment and gave him a sinister smile. "Do you intend to fire that gun at me anytime soon?"

"Fine then! I'll have so much fun chopping you up and sending your body parts to your family members!" Sam Frank said.

Before he fired his guns I saw a couple of daggers coming at me. I dodged those effortlessly. I used my tracking abilities to see that there were two more of the targets that I was supposed to go after who were throwing the daggers at me.

This didn't deter me from fighting Sam Frank. I used my electricity abilities and short circuited the security cameras in the area and I let go of the guy's arm that I had just broken. I figured it would be a good time to use my other abilities. I couldn't stop smiling at Sam Frank's reaction when he saw that I had a fireball in my hand.

As daggers kept getting thrown at me I continued catching them. I caught at least six different daggers with my free hand and combined them with my fireball. The fireball shot out of my hand and one dagger landed into the heart of Sam Frank and he fell over in an instant death. When I used my tracking abilities I saw that the other men were killed the same way.

I dusted my hands and smiled at a job well done. Once that was taken care of I turned around and ran to where Levi was. He was waiting outside next to the car he had ready for us to go. He had a worried look on his face and I guess he heard the gunshots and the crowd must've ran from the building because there were a couple of ambulances and fire trucks along with a couple of cop cars waiting outside.

When Levi saw me he ran to me and hugged me. "Eve! What the hell happened to you? You went to the bathroom and then there were gunshots…" He paused and looked down. "You're hurt!"

I looked down where he was looking and was a little surprised that I managed to get hit with a bullet in my left ankle. I didn't feel any pain until Levi said something. I whispered into his ear, "Listen, can you let me sit down in the car for a bit? All I need to do is to take the bullet out and it will heal right up. Can you grab me a towel please? Don't worry, everything will be fine."

Levi nodded and led me over to the door and helped me into the backseat. He got in the backseat moments later and told the driver to put up the privacy screen.

He sighed, "Let me guess a couple of your enemies decided to show up tonight didn't they?"

  I nodded. "Yeah they did."

I reached down and pulled the bullet out of my left ankle and it healed up once the bullet was taken out. Once it healed I wiped the remaining blood off of it. When we got home Levi made me sit on the couch in the living room. He sighed, "We need to talk."

  "About what?" I asked.

"You were sent to do a job at the event weren't you?" Levi said.

I grit my teeth. "Seriously? Did Mother Terra call you? That woman I swear!"

Before I could go on with my rant Levi stopped me. "No, she didn't call me, I just had a hunch. Although I have a feeling you can't tell me what the job was and I know every time you go out I'm not going to know. That's what scares me though."

  I tilted my head. "Huh?"

"Look, I know you don't need to be protected. I guess because I'm not used to that and that's what scares me," Levi said. "However, I will stay by your side no matter what. If you need to talk to me about anything just tell me, okay?"

That comment confused and surprised me. I knew he was going to be worried about me, I just didn't think he would be this worried. I reached over and hugged him. "It's okay Levi. We grew up in different worlds. I was literally raised to do this job."

"Yeah I know. I'm just saying if you need to talk I'm here and I love you," Levi said.

Now that statement made my heart melt. "I love you too Levi."

I let go of Levi and he smiled at me. "I'm glad I met you. You're something special, you know that?"

He took my hand and led me upstairs to the bedroom and said, "Right now I think you need a nice warm shower and some rest."

I did exactly what he suggested and as soon as my head hit the pillow I was passed out.
