Chapter Thirty: Roar of the Deserted Island
When he woke up in the morning, the bonfire had gone out at some unknown time, and there was still a faint wisp of smoke on the fire heap. Du Wei felt a bit chilly, and when he moved his body, he felt something in his arms.
Lowering his head to take a look, it turned out that Vivian had unknowingly snuggled into his embrace at some point. The little magician was sleeping soundly and sweetly, but seemed to be a bit cold as well, her body curled up into a ball, with both of her small hands even inserted into Du Wei's collar, trying to absorb a bit of warmth.
It must be that she was too cold in her sleep, and naturally, following the instinct to seek warmth, she snuggled into Du Wei's arms while fast asleep.
Du Wei sighed and didn't wake the girl up immediately. Instead, he gently took off his clothes and covered her with them before putting her down and standing up himself.
As soon as he lifted his head and stood up, Du Wei's face changed drastically!!!
……
"No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Damn it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Du Wei let out a furious and despairing roar on the desolate island in the early morning.
A thick fog enveloped the sea surface in front of me, and this dense fog seemed to cover the sky and earth with a thick layer of white gauze! The air was filled with humid water vapor, and under such fog, nothing could be seen on the sea at all!
In such terrible weather, the visibility on the sea is probably less than ten meters!!!
How can Du Wei not be anxious?
He was stranded on this desolate island, with no food and only a small amount of drinking water. It was urgent that he leave as soon as possible. Therefore, his only hope was that other ships would pass by the surrounding waters of the small island and rescue them along the way.
For this, Du Wei had already thought of a plan. From today morning onwards, he would immediately start burning bonfires day and night on the coast! Using the bonfires and thick smoke to attract passing ships - if there were indeed any passing ships in the vicinity.
But now... facing such a thick fog... Du Wei's heart immediately turned cold!
What a thick fog! The visibility is so low! Even if Du Wei sets fire here, passing ships will not be able to see it as they sail around the island in this ghostly weather!!
What made Du Wei desperate was that, according to his common sense, generally, at sea, this kind of thick fog would usually last for a considerable period of time!
If it's foggy on land, it might clear up in a day. But at sea... even if it doesn't clear up for three to five days, that's normal!
Three to five days...
Du Wei sighed inwardly, did I still have three to five days left? Until now, he hadn't even had a bite to eat.
Vivian was startled awake by Du Wei's call, and she looked at Du Wei with a gloomy face. Poor little Vivian also felt some unease in her heart.
Du Wei didn't say a word, quickly picked up the branches around him and piled them up, then lit a fire. He tried his best to make the flames bigger and more intense.
Then he ran back and forth collecting many branches, throwing them in front of Vivian.
"Hey, you watch the fire here. If it weakens even a bit, add wood immediately! We can't let the flames die down, or worse, go out! You understand? At the same time, keep an eye on the sea surface... if you see any ships... try to get their attention. You can make the fire bigger... or use magic to shoot fireballs into the sky! Got it?"
"Know, know." Vivian nodded, but then a look of doubt appeared on her face: "With such thick fog, can we see the boat? Can the boat see us?"
Du Wei sighed and didn't answer Vivian's question: "Just do as I say, this is all we can do now."
After finishing speaking, Du Wei chose a long wooden stick, held it in his hand and weighed it, then walked along the beach.
"Where are you going?"
"I'm going to find something to eat!" Du Wei said coldly, "I think it's possible to find some fungi and wild fruits. A forest this big might have them. I hope I can find some! This is easier than catching fish anyway. If I don't find anything, I'll just have to go catch fish in the sea."
Du Wei said, pausing for a moment: "You'd better pray that I can find it. Otherwise, tonight, no matter how you cry to me, we'll have to eat your hamster instead! A human life is more important than an animal's!"
As she watched Du Wei leave with a cold gaze, Vivian couldn't help but shiver.
Du Wei was gone for an entire morning.
Vivian was left alone on the beach, she was extremely frightened in her heart, there was no one around, most importantly, she felt that she had nothing to rely on at this moment!
In the past, although she also lived in seclusion with her teacher, there were many times when her teacher would go out and leave Vivian alone at home. But at that time, Vivian still had magic.
But now she has nothing.
Vivian's hands were scratched by sharp twigs several times, and her small face was also smoked black in a few places. She worked hard to follow Du Wei's instructions not to let the fire die down, and she tried her best to make the bonfire burn vigorously.
At noon, Du Wei finally came back.
Looking from afar, Du Wei walked back step by step, his legs seemingly injured, but his expression was somewhat delighted.
There was a vine around Du Wei's neck, and the vine had many strange things hanging from it. They looked like some kind of plant roots that Du Wei had dug up from underground, still covered in black dirt.
He had one hand leaning on the wooden stick, and the other hand holding a small bunch of shrub branches, with many orange-yellow small fruits hanging sparsely on it.
Those fruits are born lovely, one by one, with colors so bright and vibrant, all about the size of grapes. They must be extremely delicious!
Vivian's mouth immediately began to water.
Before this, the female magician had never tasted the taste of hunger, let alone starved for so long!
"Eat eat eat! You've found it!!" Vivian cheered, running barefoot towards Du Wei with a series of joyful leaps.
Du Wei looked at Vivian's appearance, and the corners of his mouth seemed to reveal a hint of a smile, which then disappeared. He said with a serious face: "Don't be too happy too early, it's just this much discovery for an entire morning."
He walked with a strange posture, and Vivian only noticed that Du Wei's feet were broken in several places. It seemed that he had been walking barefoot in the woods and was scratched by something sharp.
"Alright, let's eat first."
Du Wei put down his spoils of war and pointed to the string of plant roots hanging from the tree vines: "These plants are ones I can identify, I've done some research on pharmacology. These few plants are all wild, their roots have many uses, they're edible, and they're not small either."
Du Wei said, taking these things to the seaside and carefully washing them a few times, handing them over to Vivian: "These are all yours. You can eat them like this, or put them on the fire and roast them before eating."
Vivian was taken aback, looking at the handful of tree roots and grass roots in her hand, suddenly feeling a bit wronged, pouting, and looked at the nearby shrub branch full of bright fruit: "I... I want to eat fruit, I..."
"No, you eat this, I'll eat those fruits." Du Wei's voice was calm, but it carried an irresistible tone.
Vivian almost shed tears.
She was heartbroken, this guy must be on purpose! He's intentionally abusing poor Vivian! Yes, it must be because Vivian didn't let him eat Chuchu! That's why he's taking revenge like this!
Vivian was filled with grievances, and could only crouch pitifully by the fire heap, taking those roots of trees and grasses to roast over the flames for a couple of times before stuffing them into her mouth to chew.
The roots of the plants Du Wei chose were very thick and didn't taste bad at all... or rather, they had no flavor at all. They were just a bit tough and hard to chew. Poor Vivian was exhausted even before she managed to eat two of them. More importantly, this thing wasn't delicious at all... it had no flavor, too bland.
Du Wei sat on the opposite side of the bonfire, silent, plucking fruit from the bushes one by one and throwing them into his mouth, chewing one by one, then swallowing.
Gradually, Vivian's gaze was drawn over...
He swallowed hard, that fruit... must be really delicious... this stingy guy!!
"What are you looking at?" Du Wei sneered: "Are you blaming me for not giving you fruit to eat? Letting you eat the bitter tree roots?"
Vivian didn't say a word, but curled her lip.
Taking advantage of Du Wei's inattention, Vivian suddenly and stealthily plucked a fruit from the shrub branch... Her magician robe was very large and roomy, and her movements were also very covert, so Du Wei didn't notice.
Then, taking advantage of Du Wei's distraction, Vivian quickly threw the fruit into her mouth and bit down hard...
Just as she was eagerly anticipating the sweet taste...
Wow!!!!!!!
Vivian's face suddenly changed, her whole face was strange, and then as if she couldn't wait, she quickly opened her mouth, and with one mouthful, she spat it all out!
What a thing! Sour to the point of toothache! Astringent to the point where your tongue can twist!! Vivian only took one bite, and she felt like she was about to throw up!
Can this fruit be eaten too?
Du Wei looked at Vivian's appearance, just smiled faintly, then he bit down the last fruit, he ate very slowly, mouthful by mouthful, and then stood up: "Alright, we've finished eating, we still have things to do."
At this moment, Vivian looked at the bare shrub branch on the ground and then looked at the remaining two plant roots in her hand... Compared to that sour and nauseating fruit, these bland and tasteless plant roots were simply delicious!
"Remember Du Wei's sentence 'You eat these, those fruits are mine.'"
I also remembered that Du Wei didn't say a word and his expression didn't change as he ate those awfully tasting fruits one by one...
Vivian suddenly felt like she couldn't say a word.
She clutched the roots of the tree tightly in her hand and stared at Du Wei.
"What's wrong? Hurry up and eat, we still have things to do!" Du Wei frowned.
"Yes! Yes!" Vivian turned around and stuffed the grass roots into her bosom, then hopped and skipped to Du Wei's side. Her eyes and voice softened a lot, even with a hint of apology: "What are we doing? I'll listen to you!"
"We catch fish, otherwise we'll only eat grass roots, and we can't hold on for long!" Du Wei smiled and said: "This root of the tree is tied to me, you pull the other end, I go into the water with a branch fork to see if I can think of a way to get a few fish... however..."
He hadn't finished speaking when suddenly a earth-shattering roar was heard!!
Suddenly, the ground beneath their feet began to shake violently! Du Wei and Vivian were unable to stand firm and fell to the ground in an instant!!
That roar was like a transmission from hell, dull and suffocating, but it heavily slammed into people's hearts! Du Wei had heard the roar of the giant dragon before, and he originally thought that was probably the most terrifying roar in the world!
But now, this sound is far more terrifying than the roar of a giant dragon! The sound is louder and makes people even more fearful!!
The ground kept shaking and swaying, Du Wei felt as if he was experiencing a terrible earthquake!!
And in this swaying, even the seawater roared... The sea churned up wave after wave of intense waves!!
"What in the world is that sound!!" Du Wei's face changed drastically as he held Vivian, who had fallen into his arms.
Vivian was so scared that her face turned white.
At this moment, Vivian's pet dragon in the woods also seemed to be awakened by the roar! The sleeping giant dragon has woken up, but...
Obviously, Vivian and Du Wei both heard that giant dragon let out a mournful cry!
The roar of the giant dragon was actually filled with fear!
