Table Talk

  James

  I've received Quartz's letter.

  Scribe, write this down!

  Yes, I understand.

  Quartz

Upon arrival, the villagers were relatively cooperative, more so those from Unk than others, and none seem to have attempted deceiving or absconding since our arrival.

Heading towards Flengriam, we came across that strange mountain—that unnatural, skyward spire with no end in sight. I did not dare attempt an ascent, and, if Jace's notes can be trusted, the missing pages would not be up there anyway.

We have recently arrived at Loank and will be making the trek to and over the bridge to Jahrum tomorrow morning. If possible, I would like to search both Jahrum and Flengriam in one day, but the capital will likely take a full day of its own for a cursory search, much less an in-depth investigation.

There is nothing else to report as of yet.

  James

  ...

  ...

Well, that was a short message.

  ...

What are you all waiting for? The food's getting cold!

  Fallus

According to the library log books, there should have been 181 books written by Father in the tower.

  Victus

We recovered Journal 1 through Journal 177...

  Fallus

...A Dissertation on Lingering Magical Injuries...

The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.

  Victus

  ...and two textbooks. 180.

  Fallus

That makes my qualms over the existence of a Journal 178 far more founded.

  Victus

Let us not be hasty, Brother, for there is a plethera of possibilities to explore—we must be wary of becoming hung up on any single one.

  Elmpar

Apparently, some Effrostian company is trying to open a mine in Lavih.

  Ruby

That's the mountain north of Fort Zenx, right?

  Elmpar

  Yeah, should be.

  Ink

Isn't that in Drysh? Whoever made the decision to mine there must be out of their mind.

  Dr. Daieng

Sir Wev, to whom do your responsibilities fall when you are away?

  Wev

The tasks assigned to me in recent days have been of miniscule consequence, and thus I saw fit to entrust my aids and my son with the duties I owe to the crown in my absence.

  James

Dr. Daieng, I don't mean to be rude, but what led you to attend these meetings? Don't misunderstand, we value any help and information you may be able to provide for the sake of finding out what happened to Jace, but you have never before been deeply involved with the Wanderers. Sir Wev is slightly more understandable because we have worked with the Amicable government in the past, but our relationship with the Church of Nuntius Finis is quesitonable at best.

  Dr. Daieng

Just consider it a favor for a friend.

  James

  ...

  ...

Riiiiiiiight, yeah, sure. No questions here.

  Carmen

  Dawn declares the day's beginning,

  Sunshine sent from rising radiance.

  Dark dissolved to shadows, thinning,

  Surviving sun's irradiance.

Doubts develop when sun stands high.

Stars speculate where dark lies in.

Dusk declares the day's end is nigh,

  Sunset seen on the horizon.

Day does end when twilight comes out.

Silver slivers stay from sun's beams.

Darkness descends once they black out,

So soon moon will rouse some from dreams,

  Deigning while waning to bestow

  Moonlight upon the world below.

  Rufu

Carmen, stop being boring! I want to hear more about dragons!

  Carmen

  :(

  Saol

  I thought it was good!

  Carmen

  :)

  Rufu

  Don't lie, that was boring!

  Carmen

  :(

  Alex

Have you been writing everything down?

  Yes, actually.

  Alex

I suppose anything can be written when a mage turns scribe.

  You flatter me.

  Alex

  What led you to—

  James

  Clap! Clap! Your attention, please!

I hope you are all enjoying your meals, and the meeting will resume in fifteen minutes. That means you should be in the room in ten minutes so that we can take attendance! Don't worry about your dishes, the staff will be around to collect them shortly.

  Alex

...I meant to ask, what led you to apply for your current position?

You'd be surprised by the pay.

  Alex

  More than your teaching position?

  Oh, you know of me?

  Alex

Yes, I read your dissertation; it was quite an educated piece.

Thank you for your kind words.
