Prologue
The weather has already entered winter, but there are still many couples by the lake in Central Park, wearing thick clothes and walking together.
"You're a good person." The woman's soft words made Wu Shan smile bitterly.
The woman seemed to see Wu Shan's misunderstanding and immediately corrected: "I mean it, you really are a good person. We've been together for so long, I know."
Wu Shan leaned on the railing by the lake, looking up at the overcast sky, as if asking a question, and also seemed to be muttering to himself: "Is it bad to be a good person?"
"Of course it's good, but sometimes you're too good to be true! I hope you'll only be nice to me and not do those messy things for my sake. Otherwise, we can only break up."
Wu Shan hesitated for a moment before finally lowering his head and saying dejectedly: "Alright then!"
The woman's tense face finally cracked a smile, just as she was about to speak, but suddenly a cry for help came.
"Help! Someone has fallen into the water."
The woman stared at Wu Shan, and Wu Shan sighed in his heart "Heaven, you're playing with me!" He helplessly spread his hands to the woman, then retreated step by step before turning around and accelerating towards the lake.
"Wait for me!" These two words wandered in Wu Shan's heart, but ultimately didn't come out of his mouth.
The woman gazed at Wu Shan's departing figure with a hint of helplessness, watching as he took off his shoes and coat and plunged into the icy water. Though her eyes held a glimmer of admiration, she ultimately turned to leave resolutely.
Wu Shan's swimming skills were still pretty good, with a passion for saving people, he rescued the first child from the icy lake water in no time, followed by cheers from the lakeside, and then the second one. By this time, Wu Shan was already exhausted.
"There's still one more, just one more, please save him!" A girl begged desperately, Wu Shan's lips turned purple, weakly waving his hand, indicating that he was powerless. But the girl only pleaded bitterly.
Wu Shan looked up and saw that the figure by the lake had disappeared. He gritted his teeth, dove into the water again, but no matter what he couldn't find the last child. He couldn't give up, kept searching, searching!
The body has gone numb, and consciousness is gradually fading away.
Vaguely remembered, someone told himself, be a good person, it will make you happy.
Wu Shan felt his body becoming very heavy, sinking constantly towards the bottom of the lake, but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't seem to reach the bottom of what should have been a not-so-deep artificial lake.
"Without a chance to show great mercy, with the same body and great compassion, infinite merits, instantly becoming a Buddha." In a daze, an incomparably vast voice surrounded Wu Shan's ears, and Wu Shan finally lost his last bit of consciousness.
