Chapter 42: The First Special Task (8)
Gu Hao and Xu Hongming were worried that they would be mistaken for Japanese soldiers by their own people, so they had already taken off the Japanese military uniforms.
The two men followed the route previously agreed upon by Dong and Li Mao, running back and forth while throwing hand grenades towards the warehouses lined up on the platform. The explosion of the hand grenades triggered an explosion of the ammunition in the warehouse, with one loud blast after another shaking the sky and earth. After the explosion, flames rose, illuminating the entire train station as if it were daytime.
Li Yuanyuan drove the car onto the platform, saw Gou Hao and Xu Hongming running back and forth in front of her, and stepped on the accelerator with one foot, causing the truck to rush forward.
"Hurry up and get on the truck!" Dong Li Mao shouted loudly, using the submachine gun in his hand to sweep across the several Japanese soldiers chasing after Gou Hao and Xu Hongming, covering them as they ran to the front of the truck.
Gou Hao turned around and threw a hand grenade, then he and Xu Hongming jumped onto the footboards on both sides of the truck cab, one hand grasping the door, the other firing at the Japanese army.
Dong Li Mao said to Li Yuanyuan: "Drive the car onto the railway and go along it, in the opposite direction of that moving train, keep going forward, you will definitely find that small station!"
Li Yuanyuan suddenly turned the steering wheel sharply, and the truck flew off the platform, bouncing violently on the rails twice before roaring forward in a mad dash.
Because the railway and platform had a height difference, the truck ran on the railway with only the canvas top of its carriage exposed. The bullets shot by the chasing Japanese soldiers all hit the canopy, posing no threat to Dong Li Mao and his companions.
Dong Li Mao watched as the assault team and local resistance organization rushed towards the station warehouse, saying to himself: "I hope they end the battle and withdraw soon."
Ten commandos, each with a Thompson submachine gun in hand, charged forward, spewing forth angry tongues of flame. The Japanese troops, perhaps stunned by the sudden attack, were slow to react; although some put up fierce resistance, many were shot before they could even grab their weapons. Some of those killed were warehouse workers and administrative personnel who had no combat experience, so the actual number of Japanese troops who resisted was not that high.
In the opposite direction of the departing train, Li Yuanyuan drove the car as fast as if it were flying on the rails. The gravel under the tracks was rolled up by the wheels and hit the bottom of the truck's compartment with a loud rattling sound.
Gu Hao and Xu Hongming were like two iron men tied to the truck, standing steadily on both sides of the cab that was shaking as if it were dancing.
Dong Li Mao poked his head out to take a look back, and in the distance, flames from explosions continued to rise, it seemed that the station's ammunition depot had been destroyed. He was worried about the assault team members who followed him, these people had just joined the special operations unit, some of whose names he hadn't even remembered yet, and they had participated in such a dangerous operation with him.
"Sister, are you sure that thing is really what you said it was? Does it have to be canned and refrigerated?" Dong Li Mao pulled his head back in, looking sideways at Li Yuanyuan who was gripping the steering wheel tightly as she drove.
"I've seen the materials provided by the Allies, there are photos, under certain temperatures and humidity, microorganisms multiply very quickly. Given the current weather conditions, if they don't seal and refrigerate them properly, I'm afraid those little devils will be wiped out by bacteria before they even reach our military base!" Li Yuanyuan said with a glance at Dong Limao.
"I hope that little station up ahead doesn't disappoint us." Dong Limao was worried that the bacteria bomb had already been transported away: "Sister, can you go any faster?"
"This is already the fastest, look at the time, how much is left until six o'clock?" Li Yuanyuan had already floored it, with the gearshift in high gear.
Dong Limao only then realized that the watch Li Yuanyuan had given him was gone, probably dropped when he was blown away by the explosion: "Damn it, my watch is gone!" Dong Limao exclaimed in shock, patting himself down with both hands.
"What! You've lost my watch?" Li Yuanyuan shouted loudly: "That's a Rolex gold watch! It was the only thing left to me by my mother... it was the token of love that my father gave to my mother when they got married... you... you actually lost it..."
Dong Li Mao saw Li Yuanyuan's silent tears falling, perhaps because her tears blurred her vision, she raised her hand and wiped her eyes with her sleeve.
Dong Li Mao did not expect that the watch was so important to Li Yuanyuan, he felt extremely guilty. If he had known earlier that the watch held such great significance for Li Yuanyuan, he would have done everything to protect it. He himself had traveled through time because of his grandmother's old photograph, which she treasured like her life, and now he was stuck in this chaotic era, unable to return to his own luxurious world. Therefore, Dong Li Mao deeply understood how precious a deceased person's keepsake was to the living. But no matter what he said now, the watch could not be found again, so he kept silent, even if Li Yuanyuan were to slap him at this moment, he would not dodge.
Xu Hongming stood on the side of Li Yuanyuan's driving room, he heard this and seemed to have some thoughts in his heart, staring blankly at Li Yuanyuan who was concentrating on driving, thinking she was incredibly beautiful.
"What about Lian Chang and those brothers?" Gu Hao thought of the assault team members, just like Dong Li Mao.
"Don't worry, our people will take good care of them," Xu Hongming replied.
"I hope they're all alive." Gu Hao muttered to himself, turning his head back to take a look at the situation on the other side of the station, but the truck had already gone too far away. Except for seeing a small patch of bright red light and smoke in the sky, nothing else could be seen.
"Mr. Xú, did you have a pre-arranged evacuation plan?"
"Yes!" Xu Hongming replied, "After the task is completed, considering that the Japanese army may search the mountains and strengthen the checkpoints, we plan to hide you in Yangguang first. At night, from the mountain forest, we will escort you out of the occupied area."
"Alright, after we blow up the small station ahead, let's go to Rangoon with you. That way, we can reunite with our brothers." said Dong Li Mao.
"Commander Lian, look quickly! It seems like a train is coming from the opposite side!" shouted Gou Hao.
"No! There's a train coming towards us from ahead!" Li Yuanyuan also saw it.
Dong Li Mao suddenly looked up and was stunned.
A train, having just rounded a bend, was speeding towards the truck head-on, its lights piercing his eyes so that he couldn't open them.
Li Yuanyuan wanted to drive the car out of the railway and get on the train.
But Dong Li Mao grabbed the steering wheel and loudly told Gou Hao and Xu Hongming on both sides of the car: "Quickly jump down!"
Gu Hao and Xu Hongming jumped down on both sides of the truck and rolled onto the tracks.
Dong Li Mao leaned over and opened the car door on Li Yuanyuan's side, saying: "Sister, slow down, you can also jump out quickly!"
"What are you going to do?" Li Yuanyuan took her foot off the accelerator and the car slowed down.
"Never mind me, the train ahead is probably a reinforcement from the station, I must block it here so that the brothers on the warehouse side can retreat! Jump quickly!" After finishing speaking, he stretched out his hand and pushed Li Yuanyuan down from the truck. He sat in the driver's seat, stepped on the accelerator to the end, and rushed towards the train.
The oncoming train sounded its whistle, and Dong Li Mao seemed to be intentionally competing with the other party, honking his car horn, as if using the horn to tell the other party: I'm not afraid of you little devil!
Five hundred meters, three hundred meters, two hundred meters, one hundred meters, fifty meters... Dong Li Mao saw the train driver's head sticking out of the locomotive window, and he even saw the freight car driver's shocked and terrified expression.
