Chapter 39: Professional Advice
The wraith let out a mournful howl and then vanished into nothingness on the black sword tip of Rega.
Lei Ga Zheng was worried that this would be another one of its cunning escape tricks when the grayish-white light on his body suddenly disappeared.
His heart had just finished its forty-fifth beat, and then suddenly it started racing, though at a normal frequency, the strong pulse still made Lega feel a wave of dizzy discomfort.
What a close call!
He steadied his mind and sheathed the black giant sword. The true weight of the giant sword on his back made him feel exceptionally grounded.
Meina slowly came to, her big watery eyes filled with terror, "Big brother, how did you suddenly appear here? What's going on with me..."
She was under the control of the spiritual creature for a short time, and her own soul was not swallowed up, so she could still recover her original consciousness, but it was like having a nightmare. She wanted to stand up, but her tender body was shaking uncontrollably and couldn't get up at all.
"It's nothing."
Lei Ga wanted to hurry up and hand over the task to Xu Lingtian, but thinking of Meina and her mother being left with no one to rely on in the future, he couldn't bear to abandon her here. Although Meina's father's death was entirely caused by the evil spirit, Lei Ga didn't want to deny that he had already harbored murderous intentions at that time. Meina's father was a complete scoundrel, but after all, he was her father.
Lag lightly sighed and picked up the weak Mina, comforting her by saying: "Everything is over, your mother is looking for you, I'll take you back."
"Let me go myself, big brother, Father said you are a noble guest..."
Meina said with a worried face: "If Dad sees it, he will beat me."
"It won't happen again, your dad will never hit you again."
Lei Ga said softly, with a hint of self-blame in his tone.
"Really? I'm so happy..."
When they arrived at Meena's house, Meena had already fallen asleep in Rega's arms with a sweet smile still on her lips.
Lega knocked on the door, and after a moment, Mina's mother appeared at the doorway with a look of astonishment.
"Meina?! Good heavens, sir, what's wrong with her?"
"Just got a little scared and fell asleep, don't worry."
Lei Ga carried Meina into the house and put her on the bed, Meina's mother touched her daughter's face and found that she was just asleep.
Lei Ga wanted to say something but stopped and looked at Meena's mother for a moment before turning around and walking out of the room, waiting in the courtyard.
Mina's mother tucked her daughter in and slightly adjusted her collar before heading towards Lega.
"Your Excellency..."
Lai Ka had been silent all along, and Meena's mother couldn't help but ask timidly: "Do you have something to say to me?"
It wasn't easy breaking bad news and Reg tried to find a way of saying it that didn't sound so hurtful but he couldn't.
"Your husband is dead."
Mina's mother stumbled, almost falling over, but she quickly regained her balance, not a single tear dropping from her eyes. She opened her mouth slightly, wanting to ask about the cause of death but was afraid that the answer would completely knock her down.
"You guessed it right, he died in a prostitute's house."
This answer will eventually be revealed. Laga only hopes that Meena's mother can get through the grieving period as soon as possible and live a good life with Meena.
Meina's mother let out a sorrowful sigh, her shaking legs could no longer support her, and she collapsed forward limply.
Lei Ga hesitated for a moment before finally helping Meena up just as her mother fell to the ground.
"He's been deceiving me all along! He's been deceiving me all along!"
Mina's mother had tears streaming down her face, on the verge of a breakdown, she leaned against Lega and pounded his shoulders with all her might, as if they were her husband's.
Lei silently endured Meena's mother's blows, each punch making his old wounds ache more. This shouldn't be something he had to bear, but he said nothing, just standing still and letting Meena's mother vent her emotions.
The power of an ordinary woman should not be underestimated, she can endure her husband's scolding and beatings, wash a lifetime of clothes for her man, make a lifetime of beds, but in the end, she is still exploded by the man's deception and betrayal. But if this can bring some comfort to this poor woman, what does a little pain matter?
After being beaten up, Meina's mother tightly hugged Leiga and sobbed, saying in extreme pain: "What can be done about Meina? What can be done about Meina?"
Lei Ga raised his hand, wanting to put it on Meena's mother's back to comfort her, but hesitated for a long time and still let it fall.
"Meena will get better, you have to be stronger."
When she heard Lai's voice, Meena's mother finally realized her own loss of composure and hastily let go of her hand, retreating several steps.
"I'm sorry, sir... I just couldn't bear it in my heart, and for a moment, I lost control..."
"Don't mind these things, take good care of Meina. Losing a husband and father may still be difficult for a while, but for you, it's not necessarily a bad thing either."
Meina's mother wiped away her tears and nodded solemnly.
Lega turned and walked out of the courtyard. Meena's mother chased after him to the gate, shouting loudly: "Thank you, Lega..."
Lei Ga did not stop in his tracks but instead continued walking towards Xu Ling Tian's residence.
There is no longer a ghostly medicine that adds to the movement speed, which makes Leika somewhat unaccustomed. Fortunately, the task has been completed and he can relax his mind.
Xu Lingtian's residence still looked gloomy, Leiga pushed open the heavy iron gate, walked through the overgrown courtyard, and headed straight for the room on the left.
"Alchemist, I'm back."
As he spoke, Rega pushed aside the black curtain on the door, and inside, there was no one to be seen. Only a blue-glowing magical candle swayed back and forth, and alchemy tools were scattered all over the place. A cup of bubbling liquid seemed to have been left forgotten on the platform, with white medicine inside that could spill out at any moment.
Xu Lingtian is not here, he must be in another room.
Lei Ga put down the black curtain and turned to walk towards the central room. Just as he was about to lift the curtain to take a look, the curtain was lifted from inside, and Xu Ling Tian walked out with a shocked expression on his face.
"It's been so long since you've come back, I thought you already..."
Lei Ga could see that Xu Ling Tian was desperately trying to cover up his panic, and the room behind him must be hiding important clues.
"I've completed your task, otherwise I wouldn't be standing in front of you."
Lei Ga's mouth corners rose into a complete smile, deliberately avoiding looking at Xu Ling Tian's back.
"Excellent."
Xu Lingtian smiled cautiously and led Leiga back into the room on the left, chatting as they walked: "Forgive my surprised expression earlier. You see, no one has ever come back alive before, let alone after more than an hour has passed. I had already prepared a condolence letter for Xie Pu. May I ask out of curiosity, what have you been up to during this time after killing the Ling body monster?"
"Just dealing with some trivial matters." Rega said calmly.
"Alright."
Xu Lingtian arrived at the chaotic platform, pushed away the bubbling solution cup, and then stretched out his bony hand to Lei Ga, "Lend me your demon-slaying weapon for a moment."
Lei Ga looked at Xu Lingtian with a vigilant gaze, "My sword is very heavy, you may not be able to lift it."
"You reminded me."
Xu Lingtian pulled out a small bottle of black medicine from under his tawny gray cloak, uncorked it, took a light sip, smacked his lips, and then quickly hid the bottle again.
"Almost forgot to take my medicine. Alright, you can hand over the sword now. Don't worry, I won't break it."
Lei Ga was particularly sensitive to the fact that his weapon had left his control, but now he was more concerned about whether Xu Lingtian could really wield the black giant sword after drinking that mysterious potion. After all, he was just a helpless alchemist who hadn't eaten or slept in three years.
"Come on, there are still tasks waiting for you to complete below." Xu Lingtian urged.
Lei Ga finally placed the black giant sword in Xu Ling Tian's outstretched hand. He thought that the weight of the sword would at least make Xu Ling Tian frown and grit his teeth, but Xu Ling Tian easily grasped the hilt, rotating it left and right, examining it up and down like a new toy.
"What did you drink?" Leiga couldn't help but ask. Xu Lingtian was able to make such an astonishing move, it must have something to do with the mysterious potion he drank earlier. If he could also get that potion, it would be of great help in enhancing his own strength.
"It's a special medicine I've configured for myself, and I can survive till now without eating or sleeping, it's all thanks to its effect."
Xu Lingtian casually placed the black giant sword on the platform, then turned around to search for something on the medicine rack. "I know what you're probably thinking, you're thinking, since this potion is so powerful, why not take it out and sell it for a lot of money? Or maybe you're thinking, if only I could get a bottle, how great would that be?"
Being said to be self-centered, Lei Ga didn't think there was anything shameful about it. He calmly admitted: "Indeed."
Xu Lingtian chuckled and muttered in a voice that seemed to be audible only to himself, "You've only seen the effects of this medicine, but you haven't seen its side effects."
Lei Ga was about to ask a question, but Xu Ling Tian suddenly turned his head around, his gray eyes staring straight at him, "Young man, do you want to listen to the professional advice of a master alchemist with over 30 years of experience?"
The speed of the topic change surprised Leiga a bit, but he still nodded calmly and waited for Xu Lingtian to finish speaking.
"Medicine and poison are in the same source."
Xu Lingtian finally found a small bag of silver powder on the medicine shelf, let out a long sigh of relief, and then said to Lei Ga: "The human body is a great work of art, born with self-healing ability, never take medicine recklessly for minor illnesses or injuries, and don't blindly take top-grade medicine just to enhance your abilities. In the history of the Four Kings Continent, there has never been a legend who became one by drinking medicine. The more powerful the medicine, the greater the backlash it produces, you may not see it now, but your body will eventually pay the price."
"He said with a serious tone: 'Medicine is just a supplement, it's definitely not a shortcut.'"
