Kazumichi stared at the message for a few moments. His eyes focused on the part of the message that said he had died. He knew that part was true. After all, he could still remember his final moments, but how? Weren’t one’s memories of their previous life supposed to be forgotten? Or was this that one theory he had read about? Quantum Immortality? No, that wasn’t it. From what he could recall, Quantum Immortality was when the consciousness continued on in a timeline where the body survived what would have otherwise been a deadly situation.
His gaze then shifted back to the message in front of him, onto a particular word. Transmigration. Kazumichi thought for a few more moments. He recalled that word from one of the video games he had played. It was sort of like reincarnation, but transmigration was more about the belief that a soul could transfer to other living things after death, such as animals or plants, not just humans.
“Before I agree, can you give me information about the world I will be going to?” He finally asked, speaking aloud for the first time since awakening in what the message referred to as the Void Between Worlds. He waited for a response before another message filled the translucent screen.
“So it’s like a video game world?” He asked, though no further information was displayed on the screen. Kazumichi let out a sigh of frustration. His gaze then focused on the Yes on the screen and it became highlighted. “Yes.” He said audibly.
Suddenly, the screen vanished, and he was plunged into darkness again. The entire area then filled with a white light, as several creatures rose from the… ground? Floor? Encased in what looked like glass tubes. There were several that he recognized from some games he had played in his previous life, such as Elves, Dwarves, Halflings, Orcs, Nekojin, Kitsune, and several others. Another message was displayed in his vision as he looked at the different races.
Kazumichi continued to look around at the different creatures for a while. Pausing in front of one, information about the creature was displayed on the glass of the enclosure.
He moved over to another one and paused in front of it. Just like before, information was populated on the glass enclosure.
Kazumichi continued this for a while, looking at the information for each of the available options to him. He didn’t really care what his new body was, so long as he had the best starting position possible. Finally, he went back to the one he was considering, and stopped in front of it as the information populated on the glass again.
“I’ll select this one, the Wolf Gijinka. Male.” He stated aloud. All of the other options sank back into whatever he was standing on, and the glass tube before him opened. The creature’s eyes then shot open, and Kazumichi felt himself being drawn towards it. A moment later, his perspective shifted and he found himself staring out at where he had just been standing. He felt more solid than he had a moment ago, and he stepped out of the glass tube. A message appeared before him.
Kazumichi stared, dumbfounded at the sudden jump in numbers after gaining a single ability. “Um, are unique abilities usually this powerful?” He asked, not sure that he should be bringing attention to something potentially unbalanced in his favor.
“I see. Will I encounter others like me during my stay on Enniros?” He asked, not liking the implication that he might run into someone with a multiplier of 100.
“Really? That is good to know,” he said, a smirk tugging at the corners of his lips. “Now, please explain these different points and how they work.
Kazumichi nodded as he read the explanation displayed before him. It was a lot of information to take in, but it seemed pretty straightforward. “How can I view my full status screen, or character sheet, or whatever it’s called?” He asked, wanting to see the information for himself.
He nodded again and did as instructed. To his surprise, there was a lot more than just the basic stats he had been shown already.
“Okay… That’s a lot more than I was expecting,” he said in response to the information overload. “I feel like I need a breakdown of the other stats being shown.”
Kazumichi stared blankly at the screen as the response populated on it. “Was it some kind of psycho that created this convoluted system?” He asked incredulously. However, no response came from the screen. So he let out a sigh and moved on to the next order of business. “I see there’s a primary and secondary class. What classes can I choose, and how does the class system work?”
Kazumichi blinked a few times, having not expected there to be more to his unique ability. It was turning out to be even more overpowered than he initially thought. But he went through the available class options. “I’ll pick Sorcerer for my primary class, Warrior for my secondary class, and Psionicist for my tertiary class,” he stated aloud.
This was an interesting development. Why would the system warn him against picking a class, yet present it as one of the options? He decided to ignore the warning. “I’ve already picked two classes I’m sure will serve me well. I didn’t even know I was going to get a third class until a moment ago. So even if it turns out to be worthless, I don’t care. I will keep my choices,” he said with conviction.
Kazumichi just shook his head at yet another hidden power of the Otherworlder ability. “I guess Psioincist wasn’t such a terrible choice after all,” he said, mocking the system’s earlier warning.
As he looked at his new character sheet, he saw there was a spot for mental attack and defense, as well as something called PP and PP recovery. Given the class name, he figured it was Psi Points. He also noticed that all the magic sections were now filled in. But he wasn’t sure which of his stats were being used, since they all currently had the same values.
“Which stat is being used to calculate my magic attack and MP?” He asked, hoping the screen would display an answer.
Kazumichi thought about it for a few moments. Since he had gotten an explanation on how the points worked, it didn’t really matter when he spent his points. But he figured he should have at least a few abilities and skills so he can survive. “I’ll spend some points now. Is there a list I can view?” Without giving a written response, his character sheet opened, and he watched as each section opened and displayed a list. Racial Abilities were shown, though he could only see things related to Wolf Gijinka and no other races, unless they shared a particular ability. He then watched as the general ability section expanded and a much larger list was displayed. Finally, the skills section expanded and he saw the list of skills he could choose from.
He devoted a significant amount of time to exploring his choices. His goal was to acquire essential abilities and skills for survival in the new world without depleting his points. He wanted to make sure he had some points to spend later once he had a better understanding of how the world worked.
Once he had finally finished selecting the skills and abilities, he took one last look at his character sheet, though only bothered to bring up the sections with what he had spent points on.
Kazumichi looked over the new skills and abilities he had selected. Deciding on taking only two Racial abilities, Kazumichi thought that increasing his [Perception] with [Heightened Senses] was a decent choice. He also took the [Shapechange] ability so he could have a human form in order to blend in more easily.
For regular abilities, Kazumichi gave himself both the [Stealth] and [Perception] abilities, so he could hopefully stay hidden, as well as notice others who might be hiding near him. He also took the [Psi-Step] ability, so he could quickly get away if he was in a dangerous situation. After all, he didn’t want a repeat of his previous life.
For skills, he assumed he wouldn’t be sent to Enniros with money to buy food, so he would have to rely on hunting and cooking his own meals for a while. The fact that he only had a 55% success rate wasn’t the greatest, but he didn’t want to spend anymore points until he knew for sure what else he would need to survive.
“Alright, I think I am finished for now,” Kazumichi said once he was happy with his current selections. There was a pause before a new message displayed on the screen in his vision.
Kazumichi looked at his stat totals again, and recalled that his unique ability of [Otherworlder], already granted his starting stats a multiplier of 10. So even at level 1, he already had higher stats than he thought he’d need for his first few encounters. Besides, if he needed more stats for a particular situation, he had points in reserve. He also wanted to learn more about how things worked on Enniros before committing too many resources and possibly making a detrimental mistake to his overall build.
He shook his head at the words on the screen. “I will save them for another time. I’m ready,” he reiterated.
The message said, before Kazumichi felt a warm light envelop him. It wasn’t even a full second later before he found himself standing in a clearing surrounded by trees. A soft breeze blew around him, and he suddenly realized he was naked. Or more accurately, he was covered in black fur from his wolven form, as that was the default for the species he had selected to be.
His first order of business was to make use of his [Shapechange] ability, and he took on a human form that looked very similar to his original one from his old life. He stood at 6’6, with shoulder-length black hair and green eyes. Though his eyes held an ever so faint glow to them, denoting the magical nature of one of his classes.
The next thing he realized he needed to do was find some clothes, food, and shelter.
