Chapter One: Not a Person of This World
The night falls.
The twilight shrouded Kyoto, the most prosperous city in China, and the sunset reflected on the glass of the upper floors of high-rise buildings, looking golden and magnificent. Many office workers poured out from among the high-rise buildings, eager to return to their own cozy little nests.
"Going out again?" Yin Ze Ping was playing World of Warcraft, with two empty instant noodle buckets in front of him.
"Hmm." Su Wen responded, adjusting his clothes and finding that this outfit only had one pocket. After putting away his phone, there was no place to put anything else. "Forget it, I won't need my wallet anyway."
"Alright, bring me a bucket of instant noodles on your way back." Yin Zeping smiled and turned his head to look at Su Wen.
"Alright, I won't forget your instant noodles." Su Wen shook his head in resignation. His roommate was such a nerd, or rather, a total ***, and he had no idea how he managed to find a girlfriend and get such a good job.
Su Wen, 183cm tall, with a clean and elegant face, not handsome but not ugly either. When he's quiet, he looks particularly book-smart. He is a student at Peking University, now in his fourth year, and as of yesterday afternoon, has already received his degree certificate and bachelor's diploma, so can be considered a graduate now.
He is the only one in his dormitory who has not found a job yet, while three of his roommates have already secured employment.
Although it's summer, it's still a bit cool in the evening.
In front of the Confucius Temple, he had already passed by this overpass for the third time.
Many people passing by here are too lazy to look down at the bridge, let alone go under it. But Su Wen passed by twice and both times he went under the bridge. He didn't avoid those beggars like others did.
Dozens of broken pots and pans lined up in a row, this is the tool for the life of beggars.
Su Wen took a look, one hand stretched out, and in his hand was empty, but as he loosened his grip, several coins fell into the beggar's living tool. Hearing that familiar sound, many beggars cast surprised glances.
Su Wen didn't say a word, he walked from one end of the bridge to the other, and every beggar got a few coins. Although it was only a few dollars, for the beggars, if they saved a little, it was enough for a meal.
"Grandpa, why does this person have so many coins on him?" A dirty little boy showed a puzzled expression.
"I don't know, maybe it's what he saved up before." The old man with a messy head and dirty face was holding several steel rings given by Su Wen and couldn't stop laughing.
"But when I saw him give us the coins, his hands were empty. Did he conjure up the money?" The little boy looked rather lively, and with his brain, this kind of strange thing was simply impossible to understand.
"What's the point of thinking so much? Maybe he is a god of wealth descending from heaven." The old man didn't think much of it.
"If he's really the God of Wealth, then he's too stingy, just giving us a few coins." Little Brain said with a muffled tone.
……
Dafeng Antique Shop
In Kyoto, there is a small antique shop that mainly deals with the buying and selling of antiques. It also provides auction items to several major auction houses in Kyoto. The boss's name is Mujiu Ye, who is considered an old man in Kyoto. It is said that behind his back, there is a Mu family, and the old master of the Mu family refers to him. In Kyoto, few people dare to offend him.
Su Wen's destination is here.
He glanced at the Da Feng Antique Shop, a three-story small building with a strong classical atmosphere. Although it was an imitation of ancient times, in Kyoto, where every inch of land is worth its weight in gold, it would be worth tens of millions at least. Not to mention the numerous antiques inside. Calculating this way, the value of this three-story small building could exceed 100 million, yet there were fewer than ten employees working here.
"Su Wen, how did you end up here?" a strange and eerie voice sounded.
Su Wen furrowed his brow, recognizing the person who had suddenly appeared at the entrance of the Dafeng Antique Shop. It was none other than Ma Jin, a rival from his university days.
"I came here for something, but how about you?" Su Wen replied after a moment of contemplation.
Ma Jin looked at Su Wen with a smug expression and said, "See? I'm working at the Da Feng Antique Shop. I heard you haven't found a job yet. Do you want me to introduce you to someone? I'm familiar with the person in charge here. If I'm willing to help, maybe you'll get a job too. You don't have to thank me, we're classmates after all."
Ma Jin emphasized the two words "classmate" very heavily, but in fact, he was not really trying to help Su Wen find a job. He was just showing off his superiority in front of Su Wen, saying: "Look, I have a job, but you don't. And I even know the person in charge of the workplace, who is a big shot. But you haven't even heard of it."
Su Wen saw through Ma Jin's meaning and couldn't help but smile: "Ma Jin, don't talk so nicely, you're not qualified to show off in front of me."
If it were a week ago, Su Wen would not have dared to say this sentence, but now, Su Wen can say it with confidence.
He has his own confidence.
"You..." Ma Jin burst out laughing, "Su Wen, at this time, you're still stubbornly holding on. There are 43 people in our archaeology major, who doesn't know that you're the only one who can't find a job? In a few days, the school will be clearing out the dorms, and you won't even have a place to live. It's really pitiful. And yet you say I'm not qualified? I don't know what you have to compare with me. I'm making 8,000 or 9,000 yuan a month at the Da Feng antique shop, the work is easy, and my future prospects are limitless. We're no longer in the same world."
"Hmph!"
Su Wen couldn't help it anymore, this guy in front of him was too arrogant.
"What are you smiling at? I haven't even asked you what brought you here yet. Honestly, the Dafeng Antique Shop doesn't take on apprentices anymore. If you want to come in, it's basically impossible, unless..."
"Unless you're going to introduce me, right? By the way, I heard that the owner of the Dafeng Antique Shop is surnamed Mu, and everyone calls him Old Mu. Are you introducing me to Old Mu?" Su Wen said casually.
"Who's that, Old Mu?" Ma Jin muttered to himself, feeling somewhat puzzled.
"Sorry to keep you waiting, young friend." An old man walked over from outside, looking spirited and well-dressed. He was the person Su Wen was supposed to meet today, and it was also Su Wen's second meeting with Old Mu. However, their first meeting wasn't here, but at Apricot Flower Park.
"Not long after, just arrived." Su Wen naturally wouldn't say he had come ten or so minutes early.
"Mr. Mu, you've arrived." A middle-aged man rushed out of the Dafeng Antique Shop.
"Boss!" Ma Jin shouted, his forehead already beaded with sweat.
Before entering the Dafeng Antique Shop, he had also looked at the information about this antique shop. It was clearly written that Chu Feng was just a professional manager of the Dafeng Antique Shop, and the owner of the Dafeng Antique Shop was someone else. Thinking again about what Su Wen had just said, there was no doubt that the old man in front of him was the owner of the Dafeng Antique Shop.
Ma Jin realized all this and was terrified. He could be called "little friend" by the boss of Da Feng Antique Shop, so Su Wen and Mu Lao must have some relationship. If Su Wen said something against him, he would definitely roll up his bedding and leave. Thinking that his future was now in Su Wen's hands, he cast a pleading glance at Su Wen.
Su Wen glanced at Ma Jin and smiled inwardly.
Ma Jin's face turned bright red, he had just boasted in front of Su Wen, saying that Su Wen was worthless, now he realized that the most pathetic person was actually himself.
"What's going on? Does Su Xiaoyou know this person?" Mu Lao was somewhat surprised.
Ma Jin's breathing stopped as he heard this. It was coming, it was finally going to come, Su Wen would definitely explode next, and he would become the second person after Su Wen to lose his job.
"I don't know him, we're not familiar." Su Wen said lightly.
What's this?
Ma Jin was stunned, he thought he must have misheard, Su Wen would not let him off so easily. In an instant, his small heart fell from the sky to the ground, and from the southern hemisphere back to the northern hemisphere. The great ups and downs of human life were experienced by him in just a few minutes.
"Well... shall we go in and talk?" Mu Lao extended an invitation.
"Alright, Old Mu." Su Wen turned around and as he walked past Ma Jin's side, he said in a low voice, "What you said is right, we are indeed not people of the same world."
Ma Jin was stunned, these words were spoken by him, but he really came back quickly!
Su Wen let Ma Jin go, not because he was kind-hearted, but because he knew that Ma Jin's family was also not wealthy, and if Ma Jin didn't have this job, his situation might be even worse than his own. After all, they were classmates, and for some trivial argument, he couldn't bring himself to cut off someone's livelihood, at least not now.
Second floor, single room.
"Old Mu, they're all here, all the old coins, including 18 of the 1961 ones you need most, and there are quite a few from other years too. Just take a look and name your price." Su Wen spread them out casually.
Mr. Mu was overjoyed: "Great, you've helped me out again this time! No need to say anything else, I'll pay double the price, how about that?"
"No need, just go with the market price." Su Wen shook his head.
"That's not going to work, at least it has to be higher than the market price." Mu Lao's words were unquestionable. "I counted them, there are eighty-seven old coins in total, and the market price is probably over a million yuan. I'll give you one and a half million, don't refuse, this is what you deserve. As for me, it's not like I'm short of money, just consider it a pleasure, how about that?"
Su Wen could only nod reluctantly.
Mu Lao immediately let Chu Feng transfer the money. However, seeing Su Wen going downstairs, he shouted again: "This thing is for you, in the future if there's no place to eat, you can go here."
Su Wen was stunned, he looked at Mu Lao's hand, and it turned out to be a purple gold card.
"Old Mu, what's this?" Su Wen was perplexed.
"The membership card of Jiufeng Restaurant is worthless, consider it a personal gift from me." Mu Lao thought for a moment, "Last time at Xinghua Park, you helped me recover losses of at least several million, what's a purple gold card compared to that?"
"I'll take it then." Su Wen glanced at Mu Lao, who didn't think much of it either. "I'll take my leave first. By the way, dining at Jiu Feng Restaurant isn't cheap, I wonder how many discounts this Zi Jin card can get?"
"No discount." Mu Lao smiled slightly.
"Ah!" Su Wen exclaimed in surprise.
"It's free." Mu Lao added.
