Chapter 7: Origins

After visiting several hospitals that were ineffective, my grandfather knew about my situation and suggested that my mother try superstition. Actually, my mother is also an atheist and refused to go, but in the end, my grandfather secretly found a local shaman for us.

As for whether that Taoist priest has any real skills, I dont know. Anyway, hes a bag seller who occasionally tells peoples fortunes and cheats ordinary rural old men and women, which is no big deal.

After the Taoist priest came, he took a look around and said that our house was missing something, so it couldnt calm down the restless spirits of the dead, what was missing?

In the countryside house, there is a room called Tangwu, which is what we later call the living room. At that time, the shape of this living room was generally square, and ordinary families would hang a painting on the wall in front of this hall, some were Chairman Mao, some were gods, and some were landscapes. This painting also came with two couplets, called Zhong Tang!

This middle hall painting was originally used for aesthetic purposes, but later evolved into a sign that someone lived in this room, telling those lonely ghosts and wild devils that someone lived here, dont come over. At that time, our house had just been whitewashed and hadnt hung this middle hall painting yet.

The fortune teller spoke with confidence, and my atheist mother was slightly shaken, asking what to do next. The fortune teller accepted a 20 yuan red envelope and gave her a talisman, which she burned into ashes, mixed with water, and told me to drink.

It wasnt until later that I found out the symbol was indeed a talisman, called the Heavenly Master Talisman. However, it only had the shape and no seal, so it was completely useless. After drinking that bowl of water, my stomach started to ache severely, and I began to convulse. It wasnt until I was rushed to the hospital in the middle of the night for emergency treatment that my life was saved. The person who sold me the talisman was so scared that he didnt dare to come out and sell for several days, fearing that my mother would find him and fight with him. He even sent someone to return the red envelope, and never dared to come out and cause trouble again. Because of this incident, my mother almost had a falling out with my grandfather, and it was very unpleasant.

Later in the hospital, my condition did not improve, until I fell into a coma, just like my little aunt. The doctor couldnt find any specific cause of the disease, and after transferring to many hospitals, it was all the same. After my grandmother knew that I was sick, she suggested that my mother go find Cha Wenbin to take a look. My mother initially refused, but eventually, in desperation, let my father invite Cha Wenbin over to try his luck. My aunts affair she also knew about, but deep down she never believed in such things, now its a case of seeking medical attention in desperation.

When Cha Wenbin arrived, I had already been taken home. He first asked about my moms situation and then started asking me where I had gone to play recently. I dont know how it happened, but my first reaction at that time was the General Temple. However, because I was afraid of being scolded, I never told anyone in my family about it.

As for the uncle in front of me, I was very relieved. I told him that I went to General Temple that day and what I saw inside the temple. When my grandfather heard that I had crawled into General Temple, he was so scared that he almost fell off his chair, shouting "Little ancestor, you are really a living evil spirit!"

Wen Bin said this matter is very strange, the child looked at it and estimated that its not ordinary evil, cant see through it, so theres no way today, have to wait until tomorrow to go to the temple to find out. When he heard that the Taoist priest drew talismans for me to rinse with water, he said those are all deceitful tricks, without a powerful talisman, not only is it ineffective, but it will also make those things induce disgust, so my illness got worse, making my mom hate them so much she wants to rush out and tear down their baozi shop.

That night, Wenbin stayed at our home. Its strange to say that it was the best sleep I had after falling ill.

The things after this were all told by my mother:

The next morning, Wen Bin was taken to the General Temple by my dad. When Wen Bin saw the temple, he took a few steps back and said: "It seems that there is indeed some problem, I didnt expect to see this thing here!" My dad asked whats wrong.

Wen Bin didnt answer either, but asked if my dad knew the origin of this General Temple. My dad shook his head and said he didnt know.

Wen Bin looked at the already worn-out wall and sighed, "This place may not be a general temple at all! This is a Taoist temple, but this Tao is not the orthodox way, its an evil way!"

After finishing speaking, he asked my dad to go back and find some people to prepare for opening the large gate of this grand hall that had been closed for many years. He himself was going to go back and prepare some things.

After returning home, Wenbin started telling my father some things about General Temple.

So who is Zhang Wenbin after all? This has to start from our countrys Taoist:

The current Taoist schools are mainly composed of three factions: Zhengyi Dao, Quanzhen Dao and Miaozhen Dao.

Among them, we often see on TV or in movies a very famous Taoist sect called Mao Shan Pai, also known as Mao Shan Taoists.

This Maoshan sect indeed has some history, the Maoshan sect is one of the Taoist schools. It was created by Taoist priest Tao Hongjing in the Southern Dynasties Qi and Liang. Because it was built on Maoshan to cultivate Taoism, it revered Sanmao Zhenjun as its ancestor, so it was called Maoshan Sect. This sect mainly cultivates Shangqing, Lingbao and Sanhuang scriptures, and worships Yuanshi Tianwang, Taishang Daodaojun, Taiwei Tianqidijun, Housheng Jinqiaojun, Taishang Laojun as the highest gods. It advocates thinking of gods, reciting scriptures, cultivating merit, and also cultivates Pi Gu, Daoyin and Zhai Jiao.

In the Northern Song Dynasty, Mao Mountain was one of the three major talismanic schools of Taoism, along with Longhu Mountain and Hezuo Mountain, collectively known as the Three Mountains Talismanic School. After the Yuan Dynasty, it merged into the Orthodox Unity Sect, which is now known as the Orthodox Dao!

The first leader of the Mao Shan sect was Tao Hongjing, who later passed it down to Zang Jin Fa Shi. This Zang Jin Fa Shi had a secular disciple named Ling Zhengyang, whom he taught many Daoist methods. For some reason, Ling Zhengyang was expelled from the mountain and spent his life cultivating in seclusion, establishing the Tian Zheng sect, which originated from Mao Shan. The rule of succession is single transmission through generations, and it has always been low-key. By the time it reached Cha Wenbins generation, it was already the 27th generation. Due to historical reasons, many things were not passed down. Cha Wenbins master gave him some Daoist secret methods and books, as well as the Tian Zheng sects seal of succession and the Seven-Star Sword, before passing away.

Cha Wenbin, to be precise, should be the successor of the Zhaoshan school. It is said that this big seal and treasure sword were cultivated by Cang Qian Fa Shi and given to Ling Zhengyang who was driven down the mountain, and then passed down from generation to generation, becoming the heirloom of the Tianzheng Dao.

During the Cultural Revolution, the destruction of the Four Olds was in full swing. Wen Bins master was naturally considered one of the "stinky old nines" and was locked up in a cowshed, where he was starved almost to death. At that time, Wen Bins father was a cowherd who took pity on him and secretly brought him some sweet potatoes and buns to fill his belly. However, they were discovered by the production team and accused of privately communicating with the "stinky old nine". They were paraded through the streets for criticism and struggle sessions. It is said that Wen Bins father was stubborn and refused to admit guilt, and was beaten to death. His wife could not bear the rumors and gossip and also died soon after, leaving behind only young Cha Wenbin. The old Taoist took him in as an apprentice after he was released from prison. Wen Bin had a high level of talent and quickly made progress, but unfortunately, his master passed away too early, leaving many things untaught. He left behind a pile of handwritten manuscripts that survived the flames of the Cultural Revolution and a large seal and sword hidden in the cowshed. Wen Bin studied these things privately and did not dare to reveal them publicly, so many aspects were still unclear to him.

As for the orthodox Tianyi Taoist school of Mao Mountain, it also underwent great changes later on.

The people regard Mao Mountain as a sacred mountain for worship, and Taoist priests and sorcerers consider it a holy place to seek the Way. Its strange to say that at the time of the national "Mao craze", in the surrounding areas of Mao Mountain, specifically in the south, there was a branch of witches who also called themselves "Mao Mountain" or "Mao Shan", "Jiao Shan" or "Mao Shan". They worshipped the great god of Taoism - Taishang Laojun. The founder of the sect was revered as the "Master of Mao Mountain Law" Li Laojun, also known as "Bai Zi Laojun". If youve studied some laws, you might know that theres a famous "Zhao Hou Sheng Zhu" in the law school, also written as "Zhao Hou Jiang Jun". In folklore, this Zhao Hou is the son-in-law of our "Master of Mao Mountain Law"!

The Taoist schools transmitted techniques, in general, follow the orthodox route, such as stopping bleeding, calming boils, drawing sheep son, heron water, and retreating evil spirits. Most of them are similar to ordinary Taoist schools. However, some so-called "evil techniques" are different, such as "Jade Maiden Joy God", a dream-intercourse technique, and "Cutting Off Sons and Grandsons", a method to make someone infertile. Another one is "Beautiful Woman Stripping", which is also a spell in this school. Additionally, "Soul Transference" is also a technique within this school. Furthermore, summoning wild beasts from the mountains and using snakes to harm people are also secretly transmitted within this school. Its worth mentioning the so-called "Raising Small Ghosts". In Hong Kong movies, its often mentioned that they extract oil from corpses, refine corpses, and raise small ghosts. There are similar techniques in the Mao Shan school, but they are completely different from what is introduced in movies and TV shows.
