Chapter 25: The Gate of Death

One by one, that means doing four Buddhist rituals, let alone Chi Wenbins physical strength cant handle such a toss, and time is also running out. Once the sky brightens, there are still people who havent been sent off, that would be a big deal. With a determined heart, they all did it together, and tonight theyll make it a big one.

Cha Wenbin greeted everyone and didnt allow them to enter. All the people were standing outside the door, and he instructed He Lao to go to Wang Xins house to bathe and change clothes. When he reappeared in front of everyone again, he was wearing a Taoist robe with golden threads and silver lines, and the Bagua diagram on his back shone faintly under the light. Zhao Suo Chang, in order to show off, helped carry the Seven-Star Sword, and with an air of superiority, entered the gate, glanced at Jin Guanzhang who was shrinking into the crowd, respectfully presented the precious sword, and retreated to one side, with a helpful appearance.

Four tables stood in front of the four coffins, and four long-sleeping lamps flickered with flames. The red-painted coffins looked even more resplendent. In the middle was placed a large washbasin. Cha Wenbin took a deep breath, unfolded the black paper, and hastily wrote two talismans. He pulled out a large seal, stamped it, and handed it to Zhao Suo, telling him to paste them on the inner wall of the gate, one on each side. The people being subdued by these talismans were none other than those lying in the coffins.

Everyone who understands Feng Shui knows that the direction of the gate is very important. During the Spring Festival, we will all stick a New Years picture on the gate, which is now mostly a Fu character; but in the past, more were two door gods, one called Shen Tu and the other Yu Lei, also Qin Shubao and Wei Zheng, each with its own origin, used to drive away evil spirits, guard the house, keep peace, help prosperity, and bring good luck. The door god is naturally not just stuck on, it is inseparable from Feng Shui design, when building a gate, it must be divided into four auspicious gates and four inauspicious gates.

According to the five elements and eight trigrams, the orientation of the main gate can be roughly divided into the following types:

A house that sits east and faces west is a shocking house. The front door opens to the directions of birth, growth, illness, and death, namely west, southeast, north, and east. All other directions are considered unlucky doors.

A house that sits southeast and faces northwest is a Xun house. The front door opens to the sides of Sheng Qi, Yan Nian, Tian Yi, Fu Wei, namely north, east, south, and southeast. All other directions are Si Xiong doors.

A house that sits south and faces north is a departure from home. The front door opens to the directions of Sheng Qi, Yan Nian, Tian Yi, and Fu Wei, which are east, north, southeast, and south respectively. The other four directions are considered inauspicious doors.

A house that sits southwest and faces northeast is a Kun House. The front door opens to the directions of Sheng Qi, Yan Nian, Tian Yi, Fu Wei, namely northeast, northwest, west, and southwest. The other four directions are considered inauspicious doors.

A house that sits west and faces east is a Tui House. The main door opens to the northwest, northeast, southwest, or west directions. The other four directions are considered unlucky doors.

A house that sits northwest and faces southeast is a Qian house. The main door opens to the west, southwest, northeast, or northwest, while other dead doors are considered ominous doors.

A house facing south and sitting north is a Kan House. The front door opens in the south, southeast, east, or north directions; all other directions are considered unlucky doors.

A house that sits northeast and faces southwest is a Gen house. The main door opens to the southwest, west, northwest or northeast; doors in other directions are unlucky.

If two families build a large gate together, they should consider the entire house as a whole to determine the auspicious and inauspicious directions before building the gate. If each family builds their own gate, both gates should be built on the auspicious side. However, it is essential to note that the chosen gate location cannot be directly opposite, otherwise, it may easily lead to discordant relationships between brothers and neighbors, and many disputes.

The four auspicious directions are Sheng Qi, Yan Nian, Tian Yi, and Fu Wei, with the degree of auspiciousness decreasing from large to small; The four inauspicious directions are Jue Ming, Wu Gui, Liu Sha, and Huo Hai, with the degree of inauspiciousness decreasing from large to small.

The house sits in different directions, and the hexagrams are also different, and the auspicious and ominous positions are also different.

This Wang Weis house was originally a north-facing south-facing house, most rural areas are like this, because the sunlight is good, maybe its because there is a crooked jujube tree blocking the shade in the yard, when opening the door, he chose a southwest position. When Cha Wenbin entered the door for the first time, he saw that the direction of the door was not anything else, but the big evil among the four evils: death!

If one had to say why this disaster befell his family, the location of the main gate is such that even if they escaped this time, its hard to guarantee nothing will happen in the future. With four innocent corpses lying inside, its a terrible omen indeed. Those two talismans were meant to be placed on the main gate as guardian deities, to ward off the external evil spirits and temporarily calm the master inside. As for those people outside, Cha Wenbin asked the village chief to prepare wine and dishes in the evening, and everyone ate and drank in the courtyard until dawn, with the intention of using human energy to suppress this heaven-shaking calamity.

After finishing, Cha Wenbin beckoned to Jin Guanzhang, who was sitting in a daze, and signaled him to come over. Director Jin stepped through the gate with a stiff scalp, and Cha Wenbin handed him three incense sticks, asking him to light one for each of the four coffins, and to be sincere.

Director Jin didnt dare not listen, and he knocked his head twelve times in total. He wished that the person inside was one of his own relatives, so he could show more filial piety. He respectfully inserted incense sticks into the rice bowl and then knelt down in front of the ancestral tablet to burn some yellow paper. Director Jin was the second person to offer incense today. Zhang Wenbins purpose was very clear: to tell the master inside that this man had come to pay his respects today, next only to their own son, so dont bother him! After finishing, Director Jin retreated again.

Zha Wenbin was just about to call others in to burn incense when Director Zhao suddenly shouted: "Not good, its on fire!"

Zha Wenbin was startled, turned his head to look, and found that the remaining unburned part of the yellow paper had floated up with the heat, hitting the middle one of the four coffins. The coffin, which was originally made of paper, caught fire on its hanging tassels. Zha Wenbin rushed forward in a flash, pounced several times, and finally extinguished the flames. Just as he was about to breathe a sigh of relief, he heard a loud crash, and the two candles in front of the coffin next door suddenly fell over.

The people outside were watching intently, and this scene happened just as Director Jin was about to exit after burning incense. For a moment, everyones eyes focused on him, and Director Jin himself naturally saw it too. At this moment, he couldnt help but want to escape from this place immediately. Looking at all the village elders, he couldnt move either, and could only look inside at Cha Wenbin who was deep in thought.

Cha Wenbin furrowed his brow, but didnt make a fuss. It wasnt even midnight yet. He could only go forward to pick up the candle and relight it. Seeing that everyone outside was staring inside, he explained to the crowd: "Its probably just the wind, dont be alarmed."

Hes a honest man and wont lie, the village chief outside immediately responded with a sentence: "There is no wind outside..." This sentence immediately boiled over, some people turned their heads and wanted to leave the yard, no one wanted to stay in this place for another half minute. Seeing that many people were about to leave, Cha Wenbin was preparing to go out and intercept them. Just as he stepped out of the gate a few steps, Zhao Suozhang rushed out from inside while shouting: "Its bad, Wenbin, quick look, all four incense sticks have gone out!" Cha Wenbin turned his head back but hadnt had time to look when he collided with Zhao Suozhang. The people who were preparing to leave turned their heads to take a look: the four incense sticks had all burned for one-third of their length and then extinguished, without even a wisp of smoke floating in the air...

It was unclear who shouted, "Ghost!" but the crowd suddenly surged towards the gate of the courtyard. In this situation, someone shouting that theres a ghost would have an absolutely terrifying effect. Before two people could even get out, the lights suddenly went out and everything turned black... Those who had already run out also found themselves in darkness, too afraid to move forward, they could only stand still. The entire scene descended into chaos.

To say some people with smaller guts, they are probably already wetting their pants by now, just like Principal Jin, this is what he fears the most, at this moment crouching on the ground hugging the table leg and shouting xx save me.

Cha Wenbin didnt care anymore, rushed into the yard and shouted: "Everyone dont panic, if you want peace in the village in the future, stay here, if you still want to die, leave, I wont stop you! Whos next, nobody knows!"

He shouted this out, and the scene quieted down for a moment. He shouted again: "Dont make a mess, those with flashlights turn on the lights, and set up torches in the middle of the courtyard!"

At the critical moment, it was still the village chief who took charge. Today, this master had to do what he didnt want to do, and immediately found someone to carry it out. Several bonfires were lit, illuminating the faces of the crowd: some were trembling, some were gritting their teeth, and some were crying...

The flames illuminated Zhang Wenbin, who was wearing a Taoist robe that shone brightly. At this moment, he was the savior in many peoples hearts. Zhang Wenbin looked at the crowd and said, "I didnt have to get involved in this matter, but if I leave, there will be even greater disasters in this village in the future. If you all stay together tonight, I can guarantee that nothing will happen! But if anyone goes back home, whether theyll encounter anything on the way, I dont know!" After finishing speaking, he waved his sleeve and turned to enter the main hall, which was only lit by four lanterns.

This sentence was his deliberate half-persuasion and half-intimidation, a helpless measure, but this shout did indeed take effect. The village chief shouted to everyone: "Weidong is also from our village, cant harm us? Listen to Master Cha, with him here, nothing will happen, not to mention others, just for that child, we should help the family!" He was indeed a clever village chief, quickly thinking on his feet, and then had someone bring over the child, making him kowtow three times. This way, using both soft and hard tactics, no one wanted to leave anymore. Those with small courage could only continue with a stiff upper lip; otherwise, whoever ran away again would definitely be ridiculed by the villagers for life.
