Chapter Eighty: The Mask

Zhuo Lao Han was being forced into a corner, every step he took was extremely cautious, which made Wang Yue shout from behind: "Mr. Zhuo, please hurry up." As soon as he finished speaking, there was the sound of a gun bolt being pulled back, which scared Zhuo Lao Han so much that he jumped onto the boat in one swift motion.

Carrying a flashlight, Old Zuo turned his head away several times, not daring to look. Every time he turned back, it was the gleaming steel knife and submachine gun. In his heart, he cursed the ancestors of these little Japanese devils for eighteen generations, while muttering that it wasn't that he was unfilial, but those few bastards forced him to do it, you can't blame me at all.

The canvas of the boat has been opened, and the old man took a glance inside. It's a corpse! Although he had mentally prepared himself, he was still startled by what he saw and took a step back. Wang Yue saw the old man's reaction and thought there might be another fierce beast inside, so she raised her MP5 and got ready to shoot, shouting: "Mr. Zhuo, what's inside?"

  One person.

"Is it a person? A dead person?"

  "The dead..."

The stone on Wang Yue's head fell to the ground, and only then did he put away his tools and call out to the Peach Blossom sisters to board the ship together. As soon as they walked over, one of them suddenly pulled open the old man Zhuo, raised a lantern to take a look, and shouted loudly: "Chinese mummy!"

This ship is basically consistent with the previous guess, it's a floating corpse ship, which is a form of water burial, burying people on the ship and letting it float on the water. Water burial is one of the oldest funeral customs in the world, where the deceased body is thrown into rivers, lakes or seas. Water is the source of human life, and people have infinite good wishes and reveries for it. In many myths, water is linked with gods, happiness, goodness, and immortality. Therefore, when burying the dead, people naturally think of water burial. There are roughly three different ways of water burial in the world: floating corpse style, throwing into rivers style, and scattering ashes style.

The "Snow Leopard" ship in front of us is a drifting corpse, this method of hiding is often seen in the ancient Himalayas, and those who use this method are mostly people who have made significant contributions to the tribe, such as when a tribal hero dies, they will be placed on a specially made death ship and put into the water, letting it drift naturally. Wherever it drifts, that's where the deceased person's beautiful soul rests.

If ordinary people want to be water-buried, it is mostly in two other forms: scattering ashes, which means burning the deceased into ashes and scattering them into rivers, lakes, and seas; while throwing corpses, mainly in Sichuan Ganzi and some grassland areas of Tibetans due to lack of fuel, except for serf owners who practice cremation and sky burial, ordinary people generally practice water burial. Water burial has a fixed location, often set up at the confluence of rivers, where special personnel will examine the Feng Shui. When someone dies, they immediately cut a knife on the deceased's waist and back, then tie their head and feet together with their heads facing upwards and put them in a backpack. A black cloth is hung over their mouth, and they are carried away by people and thrown into the river on the same day. The deceased's family hangs a prayer flag at the gate, and the funeral ends simply and clearly like this.

Generally, the body is left at home for one to three days, butter lamps are lit, and lamas recite scriptures to help the deceased soul. Then the body is taken to a water burial site where it is either tied up with its limbs bent and a large stone attached to its chest before being sunk into the water or hacked to pieces and thrown into the water.

The people on this "Snowberry" ship in front of me don't seem to be simple characters. Fortunately, Snowberry itself has anti-corrosion properties, so the dress on this corpse is almost intact as it was when it was buried. It's probably really extraordinary that it can move Wang Yue.

The person lying inside was wearing a mask! Moreover, the mask was made entirely of gold, and under the light, it shone brightly with a dazzling color. The nose of the mask was plump, the mouth was wide, and two enormous ears stretched out to the sides, disproportionate to the entire mask. The nose and mouth were painted with black oil paint, which immediately reminded Wang Yue of the golden mask of an Egyptian pharaoh.

Above the mask, a magnificent flower crown made of various precious stones, dazzling and radiant. From its shape alone, it's already an invaluable national treasure. The person is wearing a white long robe all over his body, with a very fine texture, seemingly made of silk, which can be described as thin as a cicada's wing. In his left hand, he holds a bronze plate, and in his right hand, a copper bell. What's even more astonishing is that around his waist, there's a golden belt with intricate patterns. Upon closer inspection by Wang Yue, these patterns appear to be three things: fish, arrow, and bird designs, repeating in this order without stop. The craftsmanship and carving skills are both of the finest quality, no wonder he thought this person looked like a mummy, which indeed it does.

Wang Yue was deeply attracted to the corpse's mask from the moment he saw it, and he couldn't help but want to open it. Just as he was about to remove the golden mask to take a look at the true face of this Chinese pharaoh.

With a hint of excitement and anticipation, Mochizuki's smile was quite eerie as he leaned half his body on the ship's canopy, his head almost touching the mask. He slowly stretched out his hand, just about to remove it when Toi Shinobu's rosary, Tsunamaru's scabbard, blocked his hand. Next thing, Mochizuki was pulled out of the canopy by someone - Chiyuki.

Wang Yue left the canopy, shook his head vigorously, and asked like a dreamer: "What happened to me just now?"

"Reporting to the master, just now you inserted your whole body into that ghost ship, and wanted..." Qianxue said this, then closed her mouth.

Wang Yue's forehead was covered in cold sweat as he hastily asked: "What else are you thinking of? Speak!"

Qian Xue looked up at Wang Yue, biting her pink lips, and said softly: "Still want to take off that mask, the master has been smiling since he saw what was inside, his whole face twisted, similar to the appearance of the mask inside..."

"Bastard! How could I possibly look so ugly!" Akatsuki shouted.

The moonlight shines, and the Toei sisters kneel down simultaneously. Chiyuki lowers her head even further. After a brief moment of silence, Chitose speaks up: "Master, my sister is right. Just as she said, we saw Master about to remove that mask and step inside, so we intervened and pulled you out. Please forgive us!" She finishes speaking, bows her head, and awaits the master's judgment.

After listening to Wang Yue, he was also shocked at this moment. As for the scene of removing the mask just now, he really had no memory of it. It was only when he first saw that thing that his whole heart had only one thought, and this thought made him feel extremely frightened at this moment, which was to take off the mask and put it on his own face!

Thinking back to that moment, Motsuki realized that if it weren't for the timely rescue by the Tachibana sisters earlier, she might have really ended up with a dead person's mask on her face. Just thinking about it made her skin crawl.

"Get up, I didn't know what happened earlier and was misled by that mask." While helping the Tachibana sisters up, Mochizuki turned around to ask the old man on the skin boat behind: "You were the first person to see it, did you know there was a ghost here and deliberately led me up?"

The old man repeatedly waved his hands, shaking his head like a rattle drum, "Mr. Wangyue, it's unjust! I only took one look and thought that was a dead person. I was just about to lift the mask when you grabbed me..."

Wang Yue's heart tightened, and she asked: "What did you say? Do you want to uncover the mask?"

The old man lowered his head and had no choice but to tell the truth: "Since seeing that dead person, the old man's hands couldn't hold back, wanting to reach inside."

Wang Yue interrupted him and interjected: "Or is it still something you want to put on your own face?"

The old man was shocked and lost his color, "How did you know? It was just like that a moment ago. Are you also...?"

It's just as I thought, Mochizuki said to herself, this "Setsubari" ship is indeed a ghost ship. First, it lured the giant snake to kill off all their subordinates, and then it intimidated everyone's spirits. And what about the Toi sisters? They saw it too. Mochizuki asked again: "Chiyuki, Chiyomi, how did you react when you saw it?"

Tao Yuan shook her head, "Nothing special." Wang Yue turned his gaze to Qian Dai again, and the girl's shoulders moved slightly as she was caught staring at him, "Qian Dai, how about you?"

  "I... I didn't see anything special, just..."

  "What's that?"

"It was just the rosary that had been wrapped around the hilt of my sword, it's gone..." She spread her hands and indeed, the rosary that had always been wrapped around the hilt of her sword had now fallen into her palm...
