Chapter Eighty-Five: Ghost Seal

Although it has been thousands of years, this place still allows you to cross the distance of time and smell the ruthless and cruel massacre of ancient times. Zha Wenbin frowned and carefully picked up a skull, gently brushing off the dust on it. Judging from the wear and tear of the teeth and their neatness, the person was definitely not more than twenty years old when he died. What kind of force could slaughter such a group of young people?

"Huh, what's this?" There was a small black dot on the skull, and at first Wen Bin thought it was just a stain. After wiping it several times, it still existed and slightly protruded outward.

Zha Wenbin said to the skull, "Sorry!" Then, his fingers suddenly exerted force and pulled hard. Whoosh! It wasn't anything dirty, but a long, thin, black metal object.

He pulled out the water bottle from his waist, and carefully rinsed it. After clearing away the blackened substance that had solidified, a 7cm long bronze nail appeared. Cha Wenbin examined it closely, and was shocked to discover that this was no ordinary nail, for its surface was etched with intricate patterns - not just any ordinary decoration, but a script that Cha Wenbin recognized: Ghost Seal Script!

What is this ghost script, Zha Wenbin knew it all too well, it was the most difficult to understand among the Taoist scriptures. This text was also called "Lei Seal" by them, and it was said that when a person was struck dead by lightning, a kind of graphic text would appear on the body or nearby objects of the person who was struck dead by lightning, this graphic text was called "Lei Seal".

Taoism believes that thunder and lightning have gods in charge, dominating the power of life and death, reward and punishment. This is a manifestation of divine authority, containing the power of heavenly thunder, with supreme power, because these words are extremely difficult to read, so it's also called "ghost seal".

In the Taoist scriptures, it is recorded: "Those who are unfaithful and unfilial, who have committed evil deeds and accumulated guilt, but are beyond the reach of human law, will be dealt with by the Three Officials. They will beat the drum, issue a warrant, and hand them over to the Five Thunderbolts for punishment. Some may have been evil in their past lives and deserve to be punished by thunder; they will be forced to become one of the six domestic animals as retribution. Or, there may be temples, monasteries, or public buildings that are haunted by evil spirits, or trees, utensils, or other objects that harbor poisonous insects. Or, there may be places that have been defiled by obscene and filthy acts, which will inevitably lead to heavenly punishment. In such cases, there will always be a heavenly mandate that reveals their guilt. This may appear at the bottom of a pot, on a wall, or on the body of an animal, but it is not in the script of later generations. It is actually a heavenly book with mysterious characters, similar to ancient scripts, bird tracks, or old writing styles. The sixth is called ghostly writing, which has a mixed and obscure form that humans cannot decipher."

Admiring the bronze nail in his hand, whether it's the workmanship or the material, it belongs to the best, especially on such a small bronze object, and still engraving such intricate ghost seals, the difficulty can be imagined. And this bronze nail was nailed into a person who seemed to have been executed, what is the reason?

Zha Wenbin put down the skull and continued to search beside it. When he picked up the second skull, he found a black dot again. After pulling it out, he saw that it was exactly the same as the previous one, and this person's head also had a nail in it.

He put the two nails together for comparison, and whether it was material, size or engraving, they were identical, just like mass-produced. It's worth noting that bronze wares are basically unique, and it's rare to see identical ones, because in ancient times when mud molds were used, it was difficult to make two identical molds, let alone cast such exquisite things.

After removing the two corpses, another four bronze nails were found one after another, all of which were nailed from the top of the head. What's the point of doing this after death? Wen Bin couldn't figure it out. An unexpected action gave him a clue.

Zha Wenbin held one of the nails and gestured on his own head, recalling the scene when it was nailed in. Suddenly, a thought flashed through his mind, and he blurted out: "Soul-destroying nail!"

Again, a scene appeared in his mind: for some reason, a group of people were running out of this very long corridor, followed by a group of people with weapons in their hands, chasing and killing them. Due to physical reasons, they finally fell down at this place. The killers behind swung the sharp blades in their hands, cutting them all to the ground one by one.

Then, just before the person was about to die, they would use this bronze nail with ghost script to strike them right in the middle of their skull, causing these people's souls to scatter after death, without even a chance at reincarnation, turning into piles of white bones. What kind of sin must these people have committed to be punished like this? Cha Wenbin thought to himself, no wonder he couldn't smell any yin energy in such a slaughterhouse, it turned out that they had simply scattered the souls, not even allowing them to become ghosts.

Just then, the originally quiet three-legged toad let out a "croak" and pulled Cha Wenbin from ancient times back to the present. His ears twitched slightly as he shouted loudly: "Come out!"

As expected, a white figure floated out from the bend behind him, about 20 meters away. Zha Wenbin took a look and it was just a ghost!

A ghost appeared in this place, although not unexpected, but also not very strange, only he actually appeared behind his own back. Cha Wenbin only then remembered that when he came in earlier, the stone wall he pushed down had a corpse in front of it. Could this be that person? Earlier, he was really careless and didn't even notice the existence of this thing. Cha Wenbin looked at the toad and said: "Buddy, did you not discover it earlier or simply didn't care about it?"

San Zu Chan didn't dare to show any interest in his words, his eyes fixed on the front without moving. Cha Wenbin smiled slightly, and with a flip of his left hand, he had already added a large seal. This was not the time to pretend to be a good person, especially in such an unclear place. He still adhered to the consistent style of Tian Zheng Dao: strike first!

The seven-star sword in his right hand was about to be unsheathed, when the white figure suddenly slowly shrunk down, and Qian Wenbin looked closely, only to see that the ghost had actually knelt down before him! What's going on, could it be afraid of him? But then there was no need for it to follow him all the way, unless it was because he had helped clean up its bones just now and was now showing gratitude towards him?

The white shadow was very vague, and Cha Wenbin couldn't see it clearly, so he took a few steps back to get closer and figure it out. But the ghost saw him approaching and stood up, retreating backwards, then knelt down again not far away.

Cha Wenbin thought to himself, "This ghost is strange. If it's here to express gratitude, why does it insist on keeping its distance from me? If that's the case, I can even escort you for a while and help you ascend to the afterlife sooner." He took another two steps forward, but the shadow immediately stood up and retreated backward again. This was truly bizarre. Was it afraid of him? Cha Wenbin put down his seal and sword, and took another step forward. The shadow still retreated backward.

Zha Wenbin looked at himself, this sloppy and worn-out appearance couldn't possibly make the vengeful spirit respect him like that. Because of the separation between yin and yang, direct communication between humans and ghosts is actually impossible, so many people can only reflect on their deceased loved ones or friends in their dreams. Daoists are no exception. Zha Wenbin took a slight interest in the blurry vengeful spirit in front of him, and casually pulled out an incense stick, lit it, and stuck it in the ground in front of himself. He didn't forget to greet the three-legged toad: "Buddy, I'm going to talk to that person up ahead for a bit, just keep watch for the time it takes to burn one incense stick." After saying this, he didn't care whether the toad understood or not, closed his eyes, and immediately entered meditation.

When Cha Wenbin opened his eyes again, the person in front of him was already clearly visible. He looked like a middle-aged man with tattered clothes, even more shabby than himself, unkempt and disheveled, kneeling in front of him with messy hair.

"Get up and speak!" said Cha Wenbin.

That dead soul seemed to understand, slightly raised its head and took a glance at Cha Wenbin, then immediately lowered it again.

It didn't work, so Wen Bin deliberately lowered his voice by an octave, made a gesture to stand up, and said in a fierce tone: "I'm telling you to get up and talk!"

This move was effective, and the dead soul saw that he had lost his temper, and slowly got up, standing with a trembling body, looking like a slave.

"Why hide when you see me?"

No reaction...... Alright, since you can come out, I have a way to make you speak. My right hand reached into the broken pocket and six Soul-destroying Nails appeared in my hand, ready to be thrown over.

"Ah!……” He finally spoke up, but what caught Cha Wenbin off guard was that the ghost on the ground kept kowtowing to him, muttering incomprehensible words.

"What exactly do you want to do? I'm not your lifesaver, or else I'll send you on your way and let you enter reincarnation early?" Zhang Wenbin had lost patience and shook his head as he said this.

Just as he was about to leave and prepare for a small ritual, the ghost stretched out its hands, pointing at Cha Wenbin, and then made another bowing gesture. Cha Wenbin thought to himself, "You really think I'm a god?" But wait, the direction the ghost was pointing wasn't exactly at him, but rather beside him. He turned around to take a look, and it was the pile of luggage on the ground next to him!

What's so special about my bundle that you're worshiping, huh? Bundle! What's inside the bundle that's so special, ah yes, there's a stick inside. Cha Wenbin remembered now, the golden stick he saw next to Sanzu was actually being kept in his bundle all along! Could it be that the vengeful spirit has been wary of not himself but this stick? He decided to take out the stick and give it a try...
