Chapter 248: Enlightenment at the Gate of Life and Death

A door, this is a relatively very thought-provoking thing. An open door makes people wonder what's behind it. Even if what's behind it is a fiery abyss or a precipice of ten thousand feet, without seeing it with one's own eyes, the heart can't put it to rest.

Looking at the footprints on the ground again, they disappeared when they got here, and the distance from that door was only about four or five meters. They vanished into thin air like this. The surroundings were empty and very bright, and it was possible to see everything at a glance. Indeed, after arriving at this door, there was no trace of where they went.

This threw a huge problem at Cha Wenbin: should he enter the door, could he enter the door, and what was behind this door anyway?

Cha Wenbin is not a person who likes to open Pandora's box, after cultivating Tao for many years, his heart can endure more than ordinary people, but here it seems like a place full of demons, those who enter are almost all people he knows.

These "people" all, without exception, had been through his old friend's chanting of scriptures and exceeded the crossing. Among these people, some have died many years ago, while others have just passed away recently, such as Chen Fang, who just entered that door a moment ago.

According to his lifelong learning, after a person dies, all those who are superstitious, pass through the yin and yang path, walk on the Huangquan Road, cross the Naihe Bridge, drink Mengpo soup, look up at the Xiangtai, and then follow their accumulated virtues and misdeeds in life, either reincarnate or be punished. How did these people all walk into such a mysterious door?

Cha Wenbin stood there, he was also somewhat perplexed, first of all, how did he end up in this place.

Let me think again, yes, I jumped down from that staircase, so where is this place after all?

After filtering through countless classics in my mind, I carefully recalled what Master taught before his death. It seems that there is no record of such a place anywhere. The underworld? Obviously not, which underworld has no Yin messengers standing at the gate, and which underworld would be built so luxurious and bright.

Since you're here, make yourself at home. This has always been Zha Wenbin's attitude, not limited by the environment he is in. He knows that the stranger the place, the simpler it actually is. No matter how complex things are, they can't be more complicated than human hearts, because those formations and palaces, aren't they all created by people? Nobody would create something like this without a certain purpose.

In the past, only one person had the ability to build such a place - the legendary Ghost Emperor "Tu Bo". As the emperor of the heavy ghosts, he was in charge of all the ghosts in the world. Is this another underworld?

For some reason, the Seven Star Sword in Zhang Wenbin's hand was somewhat excited, and the hilt was trembling. Any famous sword has a spiritual nature. This sword had been with their school for many years, killing countless evil spirits and helping many vengeful souls to be reincarnated, probably only history can tell.

Zha Wenbin's mind was like a little person standing up, constantly telling him: go in, go in, just take a look behind that door.

But he wanted to take a step forward, and then remembered his master shaking his head at him.

What would it be like if he took this step and crossed over? What would it be like if he didn't cross over? Zha Wenbin suddenly found himself in such a dilemma.

He wanted to turn back, and turned back again, but suddenly discovered that the fluorescent stones which had been shining brightly all along the way just now had all gone out. Behind him was a vast darkness, with only a small segment in front of him leading to the door still lit up by the stones.

The more beautiful a place is, the more dangerous it is. Cha Wenbin decided to return by the same route, he didn't want to know that answer.

Just as he was about to turn around and grope his way back in the dark, he heard a familiar voice coming from behind him.

"Wen Bin must be here." It was Chaozi's voice. Cha Wenbin's heart skipped a beat, and he turned around to see three figures entering the door one after another, as if they hadn't seen him at all. The last one to enter was Dashan. Cha Wenbin shouted loudly:

  "Don't go in, I'm here!"

Dà Shān's footsteps hesitated for a moment, his body slightly paused, preparing to turn around and look back, but then heard Chāo Zǐ urging: "You all hurry up, if you don't want to go, I'll go alone!"

Then, the figure of Dashan also flashed into that door, still relying on Cha Wenbin to see how he was shouting, but there was no reaction at all.

Does he have a choice in this matter?

"Haha, there's a saying that it's better to suffer once and for all, rather than enter the cycle of birth and death. Since you've brought me here to experience this, I'll take it on." After finishing speaking, Cha Wenbin seemed to have understood something, and with big strides, he walked towards the door, still saying: "The three realms are a fiery furnace of suffering, those who see it seek liberation; clear and bitter, diligently seeking the Way, not entering the gate of birth and death."

What is the gate of life and death? This is a simple yet complex ancient logic. In short, this is a test of human intelligence.

According to legend, there are two doors of life and death, each guarded by one person who tells the truth and another who lies. We can ask a question to determine which door is the door of life and which is the door of death. What should we ask?

How should this question be answered? In fact, the answer is very simple. We don't need to judge which soldier is telling the truth and which one is lying. Just ask any of the soldiers a question: Does the liar guard the death gate?

If the other party answers "yes".

If he is telling the truth, then there must be a problem, and you are asking the wrong person.

If he is telling lies, then you are asking the wrong person.

  If they answer "no".

If he is telling the truth, then a definite negation would still be a negation, and the one who tells the truth would be trapped in a dead end, while the other who tells lies would find a way out.

If he is telling lies, then the negation of a negation is an affirmation. The gate that liars guard is the gate of death, while the one that truth-tellers guard is the gate of life.

In short, if the other party answers "yes", then what's in front of you is a life gate. If the other party answers "no", then what's in front of you is a death gate. The life gate is on the other side.

This door, those two soldiers, are actually Cha Wenbin himself and the master who appeared out of thin air. They both have their own judgment about this door, one is correct and the other is wrong. Those people or souls that appear are just here to interfere with our line of sight.

People judge whether they can enter this door only because they have concerns in their hearts. If they put aside these concerns? Give you a door, regardless of whether it's death or wealth behind it, it has nothing to do with me. I don't want it and won't take it. It's just an ordinary door. If you go in, you'll go in. Danger is prepared for greedy people.

What is the ultimate goal of Taoism? Can it really be explained by a book on morality? Or can reading the I Ching once or twice, understanding the eight trigrams, and knowing Feng Shui be considered as having attained the Tao? That would be underestimating the wisdom of our people. Throughout history, there have been many who could recite these Taoist classics from memory, but how many of them were actually able to attain the Tao?

The purpose of Taoist "establishing teachings" is to let people break through the complex material world and penetrate into the origin of life, so as to understand that people have "qi with clarity and turbidity, and nature with wisdom and foolishness". At the same time, "the Tao does not abandon things, and always saves people", and wise and foolish people can also cultivate the Tao and become true.

The truth of the way is not because of how high one's natural talent is, but rather it depends on how sincere one's heart is. This is just like what we often say when worshiping those deified gods: if the heart is not sincere, then it will be ineffective!

Those unfilial children, only after the death of their elders, held a grand funeral, wore mourning attire, and searched for a auspicious burial site, hoping to bring blessings to their descendants, is but an idle fantasy.

"The life of man, with its clear and turbid energies, wise and foolish natures, though born from the same great mass, nurtured by the essence of things, rich or poor, noble or humble, long-lived or short-lived, beautiful or ugly, all are naturally endowed, assigned a fixed fate, and cannot be changed. However, the Tao does not abandon anything, always seeks to save people, therefore it is necessary to establish teachings to guide them, to impart laws to train them, so that they may awaken from ignorance, understand the truth, refine their character, and reveal their true nature, this is what is meant."

"The clear and turbid energies give birth to all things. If people seek the way of longevity, refining yin into yang, and transforming the ordinary into the sacred, it is all because of the clear born from the turbid, and movement arising from stillness. The clear and turbid are another name for the Way. Those who study immortality can firmly uphold the Supreme Way, and all things naturally return to it.

Since human life comes from receiving energy from the Way, being able to firmly uphold the Supreme Way means that one can attain the Way and achieve longevity. Therefore, in terms of the direction of life's development, it should be a process of emerging from the Way and returning to the Way, or a process of manifesting from nothingness and then retracting back to the origin and returning to nothingness."

At birth, the endowment of the Way is the foundation. The endowed nature is unadulterated and untainted, hence it is called upright. After being born, its uprightness gradually becomes distorted, tainted by worldly dust, lost in mundane realms, the upright Way is lost, and false fantasies daily encroach. Lao Jun warned: Cultivators of the Way should still the machinery of accumulated desires, return to the pursuit of quietude and profundity, only then can they attain the ultimate Void.

That is to say, human life is based on the Tao, but the pure and unadulterated Tao-nature that people originally have is not completely identical with human nature. Because after birth, people are dominated by heavy karma and fall into "staining habits and worldly dust, losing themselves in mundane realms", causing "the correct Tao to be lost". However, since the originally clear and calm Tao-nature is hidden within human nature, it is the original nature of humans. Therefore, through cultivating the Tao, people can return to the unadulterated and pure "Tao of Ultimate Emptiness", realizing the true nature of life and completing a truly human life. This is why Daoists have the saying: "When people can return to their roots, it is called the Tao of regulating and restoring one's original nature and destiny."

After passing this level, is the ten-year life span of Zhang Wenbin still important to him? Whether he can achieve his goal or not does not depend on how many difficulties he has overcome or how many degrees he has surpassed, but whether his heart is still truly alive. A book "Ru Yi Ce", with only 72 words, if one can really achieve the ultimate goal, then all the gods in heaven should be jealous!
