20. Pain

The crunching of Levi’s bones were followed by his screams. The cultists all

cheered and applauded as their leader swung his hammer into Levi’s torso. His ribs broke

like tree branches and impaled his lungs. Before his chest cavity completely caved in, the

cult leader let up and had Levi thrown back into his cage.

Levi fell unconscious for what felt like a brief time, when he awoke again, he was

strapped on the table once more with the mad doctor standing over him. The cycle was

repeated countless time. They put Levi through excruciating pain, day in and day out.

Although at times Levi would feel like he was unconscious for what felt like weeks. Time

became a mystery to him as he hadn’t seen the sun in God knows how long. Every time

he awoke, he was always on that table. His mind was enduring as much torment as his

body. Every torture session he felt more and more disconnected to reality. His psyche

was on the verge of shattering.

Levi had no memories before that hospital where he was abducted from, no better

times to reflect on. No family or friends, no one that was looking for him and save him

from this nightmare. His only peace was when the tormented cult leader would take

mercy on Levi and inject him with some unknown substance that would numb his pain.

Today was not one of those days, the leader had pried Levi’s left eye open with

some tape and a tool that resembled a pair of tongs. He tried to close his eye, but only felt

a sharp pain as his eyelids pressed on the instrument holding them open. The cult leader

didn’t say a word as he hovered above Levi’s face with a headlamp on. The light was

blinding. Before Levi could fully comprehend the situation, he felt a sharp pain fill his

eye socket as the doctor had wedged a tool under Levi’s eye and had begun separating the

optic nerve from the back of the eye. The pain was crippling, Levi was letting out a blood

chilling scream as the cult leader playing as a mad doctor began to scoop Levi’s eye out

of his head. “Done.” The cult leader said in a relaxed voice, like he had just finished

doing something as simple as signing his name. That was the only word uttered during

the whole ‘procedure’ done on Levi, the cult leader then injected Levi with an unknown

substance and he fell unconscious once again.

Levi awoke and this time the cult leader held a saw in his hand. The audience was

absent today. “By God, it's grown back!” The cult leader said in awe as he observed

Levi’s newly grown eyeball. The only difference was the color. He laughed at Levi’s

confusion “It’s just the 2 of us tonight, my dear Leviathan. The prophecy says a great

deal about you. You can heal from all but one thing. The removal of your head. We can

bleed you, break you, and starve you. Yet you will always return to us after some time

If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

has passed. Do you remember when we drowned you and the other time when we bled

  you dry?”

Levi went to speak but found himself unable.

“Ah, my apologies. I forgot we removed your tongue in your slumber. If it

doesn’t grow back like your fingers did, then we will reattach it. When we completely

kill you, you are always gone for 66 days before returning to the land of the living. The

manner of death doesn’t matter, it’s always 66 days. So, we must do our best to prevent

your death because we must halt all tests until you resurrect. Now then, on to today’s

business, we will remove an arm to see if it will return to you in time.” The leader spoke

with his twisted grin behind his mask.

Levi’s fear overwhelmed him, he tries to find solace in the fact he wouldn’t die.

Telling himself that as long as his head remains attached to his body, then he would live.

But no matter what he tried to tell himself, the sounds of his blood spurting from the saw

separating his arm were much louder than the voices in his head. The last thing he saw

before blacking out was his arm dangling off the edge of the table, no longer attached to

his body and dangling by the restraint around the wrist.

Levi regained consciousness and for once he was still in his cage, the cult leader

stood in the center of the room facing his audience and spoke. “My brothers and sisters,

we have pushed the Leviathan to the brink of death these past 2 years and have learned a

great deal. His shattered bones will heal in weeks, his cuts heal sometimes in a matter of

minutes and the Leviathan can even escape death. He can even regrow limbs and

appendages!” The leader held up a severed arm to his followers.

Levi’s heart felt like it had stopped, he looked down and saw that he had both of

his arms. He felt a fleeting sense of relief and then looked up towards the cult leader

again. He had called forward one of the cultists from their seat and was strapping him to

  the table.

“Brothers and sister, we will now attach this arm to brother Raphael in hopes of

being able to turn him into a Leviathan. This is the next step in our evolution as well as

moving towards achieving our final goal.” The cult leader called forward more cultists

and had turned Levi’s torture table into what resembled an operating room. The cultists

where the nurses and surgical assistants, the cult leader was the surgeon.

“Begin the transfusion.” The leader ordered as they began to transfuse blood into

  their patient.

“The Leviathan’s blood has proven vital for the next step in modern medicine,

when used it provides an accelerated healing process in patients on par with the

Leviathan’s, although it is temporary. The ability seems to fade within 24 hours but is

able to heal any illness or wounds in those that receive this gift. Unfortunately, it doesn’t

help in regrouping lost limbs or preventing death. But we hope to change that by merging

our bodies with the Leviathan’s.” When the leader finished his speech, he and his team

began to go to work on their patient as Levi watched in horror. Terrified at the idea of

these psychopaths running around the world being borderline unkillable and wreaking

  havoc.
