Process Route 103

  103 Process Route

It's easy to say a boastful word, but to really process this axle, still need to do a lot of solid work. The Provincial Light Industry Bureau attaches great importance to this matter, and has transferred several process engineers from other enterprises to work with Fan Shibin and others, starting from scratch to write the process file for the ice machine's main shaft.

There is a saying that outsiders watch the excitement, while insiders watch the doorway. In later generations, there were many so-called "financial commentators" who would often say "Chinese people lack innovative spirit", but in fact, these people had not even heard of the word "craftsmanship".

For outsiders, it's hard to understand why making a single axle is so difficult. In their eyes, it's just a matter of whittling down an iron rod. Some people even revel in the story of how a certain agricultural machinery factory successfully copied a certain divine artifact, as if getting a car or plane to move means success.

In industry, making the shape of a part is not difficult. At worst, workers can use a file to process a shape. The difficulty lies in achieving the processing technology requirements so that all performance indicators of the component reach their best state.

Taking a shaft as an example, its blank can be cast or forged. The two produce blanks of the same shape but with vastly different material properties.

Casting is a process in which molten steel is poured into a mold and allowed to cool and solidify. The resulting workpiece has a larger grain size inside the material, which can lead to insufficient toughness. Forging, on the other hand, involves placing a blank under a hydraulic press of several thousand or even tens of thousands of tons and shaping it like dough into the desired shape. Under high pressure, the material's crystal grains are refined, its density is increased, and it becomes more tough and durable.

If everyone doesn't understand this distinction, then imagine the process of kneading dough. The dough that has been repeatedly kneaded and the dough that hasn't been kneaded may look exactly the same in shape, but the difference in texture is very obvious.

In the field of aviation, the main beam of a large aircraft is the most stressed component in the entire plane. These main beams are all forged and shaped in presses with tens of thousands of tons of force. Only this way can they withstand the fatigue damage caused by repeated use. Without such presses, it would be possible to manufacture these main beams using other techniques, and the planes could still be made to "soar into the sky". However, their structural components would easily become aged, whereas other planes might be usable for decades, while this plane would be scrapped in just one or two years.

The progress of craftsmanship is something that outsiders find hard to see. Financial commentators generally only care about whether you've produced an airplane, not what kind of craftsmanship was used; their eyes can't see the size of the crystal grains in the main beam material. Only those who bury their heads in work know that those flashy things on the surface actually have no value; the symbol of industrial level is not the logo on the hood of a car, but rather the craftsmanship level of each ordinary component.

By the way, in 2010, in Suzhou Kunshan, a 100,000-ton hydraulic press has been built, which was the largest one in the world at that time. It represents that China's processing capacity has reached the world-class level in this aspect.

The main shaft that Hanhua Factory is currently tackling, the first production process is to forge the blank into a mold. Hanhua Factory does not have such a large forging machine, but there is one in the provincial military industry system. On the second day after Lin Zhenhua returned from Beijing, a Liberation truck with "Changhong Machinery Factory" on the door came into the gate of Hanhua Factory, carrying four forged blank parts and the broken Nissan main shaft.

"Thank you very much." Zhu Tiejun said to Chang Hongchang, the technical director of the factory who came to deliver the goods.

The head of the technical department, Yan Yuanhe, looked like he was just over 40 years old, with a sturdy build and didn't look much like a scholar. As he shook hands with Zhu Tiejun, he said: "This is what we should do, and we also hope that you can defeat the little devils and win some face for us Chinese people."

Zhu Tiejun politely said: "I'm really sorry, and I even let Director Yan personally deliver the documents over."

Yan Yuan smiled and said, "This is something I asked for myself, I also want to see with my own eyes how you processed this special-shaped main shaft. To be honest, the processing of special-shaped surfaces is a technology that is beyond our reach in the military-industrial system. You... haha, excuse me for speaking directly, a medium-sized enterprise in a certain place can actually achieve this?"

Zhu Tiejun said, "I don't quite understand these specific technical issues. Let's have Lin Zhenhua, the deputy director of our technical department, explain it to you later. However, he is very busy right now and is working on some processing curve."

"May I go and take a look at how you're doing it?" Yan Yuan asked.

"Of course," said Zhu Tiejun, "we also need Director Yan to guide our work."

As they spoke, Luo Qingsheng had already brought several workers over and unloaded the roughcast and broken axle from the car. They pushed it with a small cart towards the Golden Workshop. Zhu Tiejun and Yan Yuanhe followed behind them and also entered the Golden Workshop.

In the machining workshop, a piece of land has been cleared out as a special working area for the main shaft attack project.

In the middle of the site, a CNC lathe and a heavy-duty horizontal lathe were placed, which are the two machines prepared for processing the main shaft. Peng Gang, Zhou Houcheng, and Wei Jingwen were discussing how to modify the machine tools to meet the processing needs. After the last experiment, Wei Jingwen had already grasped the key to CNC transformation, but it still needed the cooperation of skilled workers to implement it on the machine.

Sun Changyuan, a fitter, is currently responsible for measuring the shape of the main shaft. Seeing that the broken shaft has been delivered, he hastily brings several apprentices and technical personnel from the technical department to welcome it, carefully lifting the broken shaft to one side, then takes out calipers and micrometers to make further measurements on this shaft. His son Sun Xiaodong follows closely behind his father, diligently recording the measurement data with paper and pen.

Before that, the Light Industry Department had organized people to measure the broken axle and drawn a map. However, Lin Zhenhua and others believed that since the Hanhua factory had taken on the manufacturing task, they should re-measure it themselves to ensure accuracy. Measurement is also a technical task, without a diamond drill, it's hard to get it done. For this kind of high-speed rotating main axle, even a slight deviation will cause imbalance during rotation, lightly leading to increased noise, and severely possibly causing an axle break accident.

In a corner of the venue, a place blocked by a triple plywood board, several tables were arranged, on which two APPLE-II computers were placed. Lin Zhenhua and Hu Yang were typing away at the keyboard, inputting groups of parameters into the computer one after another. Both computers had 5-inch floppy disk drives, so with so much data, they had to type for a while before storing it on disk; otherwise, the memory would not be able to hold it.

"That older one is called Hu Yang, he's the wood mold worker in our sanding workshop; that younger one is called Lin Zhenhua, he's the deputy director of our technical department." Zhu Tiejun introduced to Yan Yuan and.

Yan Yuan and Ah Ran said: "A woodworker operating a computer? Director Zhu, your factory really has hidden dragons and crouching tigers. I don't know if it's because you have too many talented people or if your workers are just too amazing."

Zhu Tiejun didn't react: "Does it make a difference?"

"Of course, there is a difference. Having too many talents means that he was originally a technician, but you can't use so many technicians, so let him be a woodworker. Saying workers are too powerful, that's because you can casually grab a woodworker and they can become a technician in another factory."

Zhu Tiejun thought for a moment before understanding Yan Yuanhe's teasing. He smiled and said, "Hu Yang is a special case. He's someone who loves to study and research. We once considered transferring him to the technical department, but he said he was willing to do woodworking instead. However, when we encounter major technical problems, we still need to ask for his help."

They were chatting when a technician came over with a sheet of paper containing measurement data and said something to Lin Zhenhua and Hu Yang. Lin Zhenhua and Hu Yang exchanged a glance, put down their work, and walked quickly to the broken axle.

Sun Changyuan handed a vernier caliper to Hu Yang, who took it and began to carefully measure the broken axle. After measuring for a while, he raised his head, smiled at Lin Zhenhua and said: "Little Lin, I was right, this place is indeed where the Light Department made a mistake."

"Hmm, I didn't make a big mistake," said Lin Zhenhua.

"But just because of this mistake, our envelope model is no longer applicable. I've been thinking, what new theory does Little Japan have that makes the curve not follow the usual rules?"

Yan Yuanhe, who was standing behind them, heard Hu Yang say this and thought it was quite strange. He couldn't help but interrupt: "Comrade, do you mean to say that you can calculate the envelope curve of this irregular surface in advance?"
