Chapter 4: Mad Dog

After that beast disaster, from north to south, everywhere was a desolate and bleak landscape. Thousands of miles without a wisp of smoke, hundreds of villages without a sound of human voice, were common occurrences. The north, due to the shorter duration of the poison, was slightly better off; but as one traveled further south, the more severe the devastation became.

Ruins and broken walls, dilapidated towns, are all that can be seen. Even in the wilds, by the side of fields and empty lands, white bones can still be found from time to time, a sight most shocking and terrifying. The wind is mournful and desolate, the scene is one of utter dreariness, this world is so troubled, people are like ants, unable to grasp their own destiny.

Many refugees who fled to the north, after confirming that this disaster had indeed receded, began to return home slowly. On the desolate land, people's voices gradually appeared. However, in this scene, there were still many sad and bleak scenes. On both sides of the road, corpses that had fallen to the ground would occasionally appear, some were killed by monsters, while others died of hunger and cold on their way back home after the disaster. Occasionally, in remote areas, there were still small groups of remaining monsters, and rumors of monster attacks would emerge from time to time. At this time, however, it was ultimately the general trend that small groups of monsters, although still frightening, could no longer stop more people from returning home.

Even these lingering demons and monsters soon disappeared. Among the countless common people returning home, there were also many disciples of the Orthodox Sect. As soon as any place reported a demon harming humans, it was quickly subdued by these Orthodox disciples.

On that day, Qingyun had a great battle, the Beast God was defeated under the sword of Zhuxian, but he did not die on the spot. The Orthodox people are not fools, and the Devil's sect knows how to "kick a man when he is down" and "cut the grass to eliminate the roots".

Therefore, many orthodox sects sent their favorite disciples, and some small sects even came out in full force. If they had the opportunity to capture the Beast God, with a glance at the world, this achievement would be renowned, how could it be ordinary? Moreover, the Beast God was an extraordinary demon, if one were to say that there were no extraordinary treasures or divine instruments by his side, even a fool wouldn't believe it.

These kinds of guesses and ideas, mixed in the crowd, spread like a tide, surging towards the south. Behind the gradually peaceful world, it seems as if countless people are holding their breath and watching. In comparison, the suffering of the common people in the mundane world is hardly noticed by anyone.

As this tide of people returning south surged forward, Zhou Yixian, Xiao Huan and Ye Gou Daoist walked among the crowd with a different feeling from others.

On Monday, the immortal still held the bamboo pole in his hand, with the white cloth on which was written "Immortal Points the Way" still attached. However, the original white color had become unevenly black and yellow due to the tumultuous times, and there were even several holes visible at a glance. Although the cool breeze blew by, the banner still fluttered in the wind, but it no longer had any immortal aura, only a desolate and dispirited air of decline.

As for Ye Gou Dao Ren, he had been following Zhou Yi Xian and Xiao Huan for a long time, wandering the world together. However, at this moment, he was covering his face with a cloth, not for any other reason, but because at this time, all the people around him were slightly sensitive to people with unusual faces, and if they weren't careful, they would be mistaken for a member of the beast demon clan, which was too unjust. After experiencing several such misunderstandings, Ye Gou Dao Ren couldn't take it anymore, even without Zhou Yi Xian rolling her eyes or Xiao Huan persuading him, he found a piece of cloth to cover his face first.

Among the three, Xiaohuan looked the most refreshing. Originally, a young and beautiful girl would naturally be eye-catching and good-looking. In this sea of people filled with sorrow and loss, she seemed to be the brightest figure.

All the way, she was very different from the people around her. She often kept a smile on her face, but it was not the kind of schadenfreude. On the contrary, she ignored Zhou Yi Xian's endless advice and helped the helpless civilians around her as much as she could.

Or someone is exhausted and falls, she goes forward to help them up; or someone is hungry and cold, she sends them clothes and food; or there are weak and sick people, she seems to have some medical skills, going forward to take a look; even when seeing the corpse lying on the side of the road, she will quietly walk past, not avoiding the stench, roughly covering it with soil, as a kind of comfort.

All the way, dusty and exhausted, except for facing the solemnity of the weak and dying, Xiaohuan's small face seemed to always have a hint of a smile, as if it were a compassionate immortal on this dark journey. Zhou Yixian was still muttering in a low voice nonstop, while Ye Gou Dao Ren followed behind Xiaohuan, never once trying to stop her; he just did what she wanted to do: burying the dead, he took charge of digging graves; rescuing the weak, he personally carried people. Along the way, his eyes seemed to only have the image of that delicate young girl; whatever Xiaohuan did, he also did, even if this journey was bitter and exhausting, as if he no longer cared.

They were not gods after all, and there was no need to say more. There were so many hungry and cold common people, but the food was only a little bit, and even they would soon be gone. Under duress, on this day, the three of them had to temporarily leave the team and head into the mountains, hoping to find something to eat in the mountain forest.

  What a terrible disaster!

On Monday, Xian held that bamboo pole in his hand, looking at the gradually darkening sky, shook his head and sighed:

"These days, it's really hard to make a living."

Xiao Huan walked beside him, smiled slightly, and didn't speak. However, in this short period of time, although her face had a faint dusty color, she was still as beautiful as before, with a few more mature touches that were not present before. The wild dog Taoist followed behind her, his tall shadow overlapping with Xiao Huan's slender figure, his face wrapped in a cloth hood, nothing could be seen except for a pair of shining eyes.

At this moment, they have gone far from the main road and are on a small hill. The night is overcast with thick clouds, only a few stars can be seen in the distance, but no moonlight is visible. The surrounding mountains and fields are quiet at this moment, with only the sound of insects coming from unknown places, sometimes long and sometimes short, and it's unclear where they are.

Xiao Huan stopped in his tracks, as if he had thought of something, turned his head and smiled at the wild dog: "Dao Zhang, now that there are no outsiders, you can take off the cloth on your face. You've been wrapped up all day, I'm afraid you're uncomfortable."

The stray dog's eyes, which were slightly bright in the dark night, flashed and slowly removed the cloth from his face, revealing his strange face. He said in a low voice: "Uh, actually I'm fine... but you've been busy all day today, aren't you exhausted?"

Monday Fairy stopped in her tracks, looked around, saw a withered tree lying next to her, and quickly walked over to sit down on it. She let out a relaxed sigh, then glanced at Little Ring and said, "It's all because of her busyness, it's all because of her kindness, so she even gave away her grandfather's dry rations for others to eat, now even your grandfather is starving."

Xiao Huan's face turned red as she walked over to stand behind Zhou Yi Xian, stretching out her hands to gently pat his shoulders and said: "Grandfather, we're still okay, but looking at those people, if we don't eat something soon, we'll really lose the strength to go on, and might even die here."

The wild dog looked around and said: "You sit here for a while, I'll go to the woods to see if I can catch some wild beasts to temporarily fill our hunger."

Xiao Huan smiled at the wild dog and said: "Alright, thank you, Daozhang."

The stray dog's mouth split into a grin, and Zhou Yi Xian suddenly hummed a tune, coldly laughing: "What are you smiling at?"

And yet you laugh, but I see that your smile is rather sly, are you thinking of something wicked in your heart?

The wild dog was startled, and quickly put away his smile. He looked at Xiaohuan again, only to see her looking at him with a hint of apology in her eyes. Her gaze immediately lit up, and there was no longer any anger in her eyes. She completely ignored Zhou Yixian as if he didn't exist. She said to Xiaohuan, "Then you guys wait for me to come back." After that, she quickly walked into the forest.

On Monday, Xian grumbled a couple of sentences in a bad mood. Xiaohuan rebuked him softly from behind: "Grandpa, that wild dog Daozhang has been with us for so long, why are you still not giving him a good face to look at? Besides, he took care of us on this road and he's not a bad person!"

Xian hummed on Monday and said: "You know what a good person is again? He followed us, didn't he just want to..."

"Grandpa!" Xiao Huan called out, interrupting Zhou Yixian's words. Zhou Yixian muttered a few complaints and stopped talking.

  ※※※

The woods rustled with a sudden noise, followed by another burst of fluttering sounds. After a brief moment, the sound of rapid footsteps approached. The wild dog Daoist had a joyful expression on his face as he emerged from the woods, holding a wild bird in his hands. Since the beast calamity that occurred some days ago, all living things were devastated, and even in the mountains and wilderness, these wild beasts and birds seemed to be fewer than before. Today, the wild dog Daoist was lucky enough to catch one of the few remaining birds!

The wild dog ran back to the original place with excitement, shouting loudly: "Look what I caught..." Suddenly, his voice stopped abruptly. Originally empty space, it was actually empty and uninhabited. Zhou Yixian and Xiaohuan were nowhere to be seen.

"Bang", the wild bird fell from the hands of the wild dog Dao Ren onto the ground.

The night wind was icy cold, and the chill seemed to penetrate deep into his bones in an instant. The body of the wild dog Taoist actually trembled slightly, as if unknowingly. He walked step by step forward, on that withered wood lying horizontally on the ground, there were even marks where Zhou Yixian had just sat down.

"They left, left......" The stray dog's mind was in a mess, and the expression on his dog face changed, revealing a look of great fear and sadness. At this moment, the stray dog was stunned, but after a moment, he suddenly moved his body...

Suddenly, the eyes lit up, and behind the withered tree, there were several chaotic footprints. Next to the soft mud beside the footprints, a gigantic footprint, more than twice as large as that of an ordinary person, appeared, with three toes in front, which was definitely not human.

The wild dog Taoist's face changed greatly, first overjoyed, then suddenly shocked. At this moment, a long howl seemed to come from afar, the sound was so mournful, like an evil wolf barking at the moon. The wild dog Taoist involuntarily took a step back, but after a moment, the muscles on his dog face twitched slightly, and he let out a loud roar, charging into the depths of the dense forest towards the howling sound. He looked like a mad dog.

  A dog gone mad!

Just as the wild dog was rushing into the dense forest, a white light suddenly appeared on the dark sky, coming from the north and crossing the horizon, breaking through the air and going away without any pause, flying straight to the south, like a meteor. And on the ground, after a while, when the white light still lingered in the sky, a black shadow appeared not far from the empty space just now, looking closely, wearing all black clothes and mask, but slightly panting, stopped in the forest and muttered to himself:

"How could his skills have improved so much, it's as if he's possessed!" Just as he was resting, he suddenly seemed to sense something, turned his head and looked towards the depths of the dense forest. All that could be heard from the depths of the forest was the faint sound of fighting. The black-clothed man hesitated for a moment, then raised his head and gazed at the white light in the sky, shook his head and let out a sigh. Suddenly, his body flashed, and he lightly slipped into the direction where the wild dog had rushed in earlier, like a ghost.

  ※※※

The Wild Dog Daoist held the Jade Tooth Treasure in his hand, his face tense. Just a moment later, a dark red patch appeared on his shoulder, as if he had already been wounded. But in front of him were two enormous beast demons, with tiger heads and lion bodies, each one as tall as a man. The Wild Dog Daoist stood before them, looking like he couldn't withstand even a single blow.

Zhouyi Xian and Xiaohuan were now standing behind the two beast demons. In this dense forest, these two beast demons seemed to have made a nest in this desolate place, with many branches and leaves piled up in disorder, emitting a foul smell. But what was most frightening was that there were corpses scattered all over the place, and apart from Zhouyi Xian and Xiaohuan, there were also seven or eight other living people here, but they were either unconscious or awake but emaciated and terrified.

It is also unknown where these two beast demons kidnapped so many people, but it can be seen from this that the beast demon disaster was extremely tragic!

Facing the two enormous beasts, Wild Dog Taoist breathed rapidly and remained vigilant. Just now, he rushed to this place and saw Zhou Yixian and Xiaohuan were indeed here. Before he could shout, they had already been attacked by the two beasts. In the fight, these two beasts turned out to be extraordinary, with boundless strength, and even managed to slash Wild Dog Taoist's shoulder. However, despite this, Wild Dog Taoist was after all a cultivator, different from ordinary people. In his panic, he took out his magic treasure and also injured one of the beasts, which now had its front leg covered in blood, apparently not doing well either.

These two ferocious beasts looked extremely fierce, and upon seeing the blood, not only did they not retreat, but instead stared even more intently at the Wild Dog Taoist. It was just that for the time being, they were wary of the magical treasure in his hand, so they temporarily stood their ground. The Wild Dog Taoist, however, was secretly lamenting in his heart. From their previous exchange, he knew that if it were only one beast, he might have been able to win with difficulty, but with two together, he would undoubtedly die.

It was just him, or he could have turned around and escaped, but somehow, his gaze intentionally or unintentionally saw the worried and fearful eyes behind the beast demon, and he couldn't move his feet to escape alone.

  Are some things really inescapable?

The ferocious beast let out a roar, finally unable to hold back, and pounced over. Two dark shadows swept through the darkness with a bloody wind, accompanied by Xiao Huan's scream.

The stray dog's throat was parched, its legs trembling slightly, its instincts urging it to turn and run, but instead, its body suddenly lunged forward, towards the ferocious beast, as if...

  Mad dog!

The outcome was decided in an instant, and the four claws of the two beast demons almost simultaneously grabbed into the body of the wild dog Taoist, while the wild dog Taoist's Fangtong treasure sword had been inserted into the chest of the injured beast demon.

The beast and the wild dog Taoist let out a mournful cry at the same time, Xiao Huan's exclamation had turned into wailing.

Blood splattered everywhere, the wild dog felt as if its body was about to split open, as if it had been torn in two. It stumbled backward, tripping over its own paws, and in its panic, all it could see were the four bloody wounds on its body, from which blood gushed out like a fountain.

In front, the beast howled a few times and fell to the ground. The beast next to it let out a mournful cry and didn't even bother to chase after the Wild Dog Taoist, instead going to the side of its heavily injured and dying companion, continuously using its head and paws to try and rouse it. However, the wound on that beast was precisely where the sharp fang had pierced its heart, and after struggling for a few moments, its head fell to the ground, and it died.

"Bang", a light sound, but the wild dog Taoist finally couldn't hold on either, kneeling down to the ground, his upper body almost completely soaked in blood, a crimson patch, panting heavily, his dog face pale.

The sound, however, startled the remaining beast, and seeing its companion die, it seemed to be on the verge of going mad. It let out a loud roar towards the sky, baring its bloody fangs as it pounced again.

Just as the wild dog Daoist was about to fall under the beast's claws, the ground suddenly shook, a yellow light flashed by, and several talismans fluttered in the air. The wild dog Daoist had vanished into thin air, leaving the beast to pounce on nothing.

The demon was shocked for a moment, but in an instant, he suddenly heard a cry of "Ah" and saw Zhou Yixian, the wild dog Taoist covered in blood, falling from the sky. He still held several talismans in his hand.

This was naturally Zhou Yixian displaying his self-proclaimed ancestral magic, just now the beast demon suddenly launched a sneak attack on him and his grandson, in an instant they were subdued, under the beast demon's bloody mouth, how could they have any opportunity to make trouble. Fortunately, the Wild Dog Taoist arrived in time to save them, only then was there a brief moment of respite, originally intending to take advantage of this to escape, but unexpectedly the Wild Dog Taoist's life was hanging by a thread, with no other choice, Zhou Yixian could only first go and rescue him.

It was just that his few magic tricks seemed to be nothing more than the skills of a three-legged cat, although they were somewhat similar to the Taoist common term "Five Ghosts Moving House" type of magic, suddenly moving the wild dog Taoist away from thin air. However, the Taoist technique had only reached halfway, and for some reason, he lost his grip, resulting in both of them falling down from mid-air, momentarily at a loss. Fortunately, when they fell, the wild dog Taoist was on top of Zhou Yi Xian, otherwise, this fall would have taken his life.

But at this moment, they didn't have time to think about those things. The beast demon suddenly discovered and, in a fit of rage, pounced again. Zhou Yixian and Ye Gou Dao Ren were stunned, Ye Gou Dao Ren was slightly better off, but he was also severely injured and couldn't dodge in time. Helpless, they could only wait for death. A hint of despair flashed across his dog-like face, and he turned back to look, as if wanting to see something.

Just then, a figure suddenly rushed up and blocked the way of Ye Dog Dao Ren and Zhou Yi Xian, shouting: "Grandfather... Dao Zhang..."

Under the beast's icy sharp claws and fangs, Xiao Huan's despairing crying face was quietly submerged!

In an instant, Ye Lang only felt a rush of hot blood surging to his head, and his entire body was boiling like a scalding pot. He stared at the figure, a weak yet beautiful silhouette!

  ※※※

  "Boom!"

A loud crash, two figures collided together.

The little ring fell to the side, covered in mud all over her body. However, she didn't notice any of this and turned around to see that the wild dog Taoist who had pushed her away was now pouncing on the beast demon, pinning it to the ground. The beast demon, enraged, stretched out its sharp claws and frantically scratched and stabbed at the wild dog Taoist's back, causing blood and flesh to fly everywhere in an instant. Yet, the wild dog Taoist still tightly hugged the beast demon, showing no intention of letting go.

Xiao Huan and Zhou Yi Xian were both pale at this moment, while the crowd behind them was also frightened for a moment. After a short while, someone suddenly shouted loudly, and all those who could move rushed over, surrounding the beast demon, picking up all the objects they could find nearby, using their hands, feet, and even teeth to desperately attack the ferocious beast demon.

The beast began to roar loudly and struggled desperately, but after a while, its voice gradually became smaller and lower, until it was silent. The people around seemed to have gone mad as well, constantly pounding the beast's body.

Until then, Zhou Yixian was the first to come back to his senses, and he hastily stopped everyone else. "Rescue is urgent," he said, and only then did others slowly stop. As they relaxed, many people suddenly fell to the ground.

There were also a few bloodstains on the small ring, but she didn't care at all. She hurriedly used all her strength to pull and pull the beast's corpse, trying to pull out the wild dog Taoist from under the beast. Unexpectedly, after pulling for half a day, the beast and the wild dog Taoist couldn't be separated. Xiao Huan was shocked and anxious, almost crying out loud.

Finally, Zhou Yixian did not mess up the situation and carefully examined it, only to discover that Ye Gou Dao Ren's hands had pierced through the beast demon's tough skin and were embedded in its chest. No wonder they couldn't be separated. After discovering this, Zhou Yixian quickly called for everyone's help, and with the assistance of others who still had strength left, they finally managed to pull out Ye Gou Dao Ren's blood-soaked hands from the beast demon's body, separating the two bodies.

Xiao Huanhua's face turned pale, and she put Ye Gou Dao Ren's body on the ground. Just as she was about to ask questions, her expression suddenly changed, and she used her hand to check his mouth and nose. Suddenly, she became stunned like a wooden chicken!

  "He... said he..."

  "What's wrong with him?"

Xiaohuan's lips trembled slightly, and her eyes were filled with tears as she sobbed: "Daozhang... he... he has stopped breathing."

Xian was stunned on Monday and couldn't say a word.

In the midst of Xiao Huan's mournful wails, under the faint light in the darkness, on Ye Gou Dao Ren's eccentric face, amidst the painful expression, there was a hint of twisted smile amidst the agony.

He died like a mad dog!

Who has ever been sober in this world?
