Chapter - 20.2
"Can it be true?" Nicole, Hermione and Daphne suddenly had stars in their eyes as they looked at Alex. But Alex still paid no heed to them.
But him not saying anything was also a sort of confirmation. God! who would have thought Alex would py it so well?
Nicole had read most of the books on Quidditch during this time and even asked a lot of people about the game. And from what she gathered, it was safe to say that an average person pying his first game gets knocked down within five minutes of the whistle blowing. So pcing her bet on ten minutes was already very optimistic of her. But her brother went even a couple of steps ahead. If he really did bet... How much would he have won?
Nicole was still doing the calcution in her head when Hermione spoke up.
"If he bet eight hundred coins... Then... Then he would get twelve..."
"Twelve, what?" Nicole looked at Hermione in shock. She already had a figure in her head. But she did not dare believe herself.
"Twelve thousand Galleons..." Daphne id it out for them.
"Fuc..." Nicole almost cursed when she heard Daphne, and her eyes, like many others, turned towards the boy behind the table. Even she had some idea about the value of this much money. One bet, and they were filthy rich.
"You pced eight hundred galleons on Harry going past twenty-five minutes. You won... And here are your twelve thousand galleons," the boy said, but one could see from his face that he wasn't the slightest bit pleased. If one were to ask that boy, he would surely say his heart might be under a 'Cruciatus curse'.
Silence... There was absolute silence on the wn. No one could believe that all the misfortune turned upside down with just a few words. All those making fun of Alex were tongue-tied while Ron almost spewed a mouthful of blood. Every time Ron went against Alex, he was left with his cheeks burning.
'It really is true...' Hermione and Daphne stood in shock. The money was not the only thing that surprised them. What was really frustrating was the missed opportunity. They had already pnned ways to console and cheer Alex in their head. This was an opportunity for them to get close to him. But it was all wasted in a reversal. Such bad luck.
"I knew it..." Nicole was the only one who was truly happy without second thoughts. Sure enough, her brother wasn't the type to squander money like that.
"Since it is over one thousand in earnings, the school will take ten percent. Here are your rest, ten thousand and eight hundred galleons," the boy tried to keep a straight face, but his heart was bleeding. They always get a fraction of the profit the gambling house made. The more profit gambling house made, the more fraction they got. But... Sigh...
Meanwhile, Alex did not step forward to collect his reward. He looked at his sister and smiled. The concern in her eyes was repced with admiration, but for Alex, it was not enough. They dare mock him and Nicole? Alex was going to face-sp every one of them with envy and jealousy.
"Can you please hurry it up? I don't have all day to waste here," Alex finally spoke up.
"There is more?" Nicole called out in surprise what everyone who heard Alex wanted to ask.
"Certainly," the boy nodded and continued, "You pced another five hundred galleons on Harry catching the snitch. You won... And taking away ten percent of the school, here are your four thousand five hundred galleons." And again, in no time, new golden towers were erected on the table. And the boy suddenly felt relieved as he uttered his st words.
But while the boy felt relieved, for everyone else, it was the final nail in the coffin. Looking at the mountain of gold in front of them, some almost fainted, some screamed in surprise, some felt jealous while only a couple of them were happy. But overall, there was only one winner. And it was Alex. With his lips curled up, Alex turned his face towards Ron. Ron was also staring in Alex's direction with his eyes wide open. Ron could have never thought of this ending. He felt that Alex knowingly set this trap for him. And now he hated him even more.
But as soon as their eyes met, Ron suddenly felt small and insignificant when he saw the disdain on Alex's face.
'He does not even consider me an opponent...' That was the thought that came to Ron's mind out of nowhere. And that one look was enough to break that baseless confidence of Ron at that moment.
"Can I have a bag?" Alex asked the boy behind the table, "I don't have anything to carry so much money with me..." Alex bragged to the annoyance of many.
"Aahh... sure... Why not...Why can't you have a bag, indeed? You have already taken everything," The boy whispered as he forced a smile on his face and went back inside the tent. He soon returned with a rge bag. If and only if this guy was not there, they would be using this bag to carry all the profits back home.
Gambling houses were profitable. But when the profits were divided, those low in the hierarchy ended up with measly sums. The average bet is around twenty or thirty galleons. But this time, with the emergence of Harry Potter, the legend, today's game was expected to be a big hit. Well, until this guy ruined it all.
But Alex hardly cared about the sarcastic remarks of anyone. He took the bag and stuffed every single coin inside. He didn't even let Nicole, who tried to get help, get closer to him. When it comes to money, Alex kept the retions away.
"Stingy..." Nicole made faces as she took a step back.
"You have squeezed them good. Are you sure you haven't made any more enemies than you already have?" Daphne asked, "There may be some complications because of this."
"Money is all there is to it," Alex was not concerned like Daphne. She had a point, but Alex knew money could buy almost everything.
"But don't get conceited. This was all luck," Hermione produced her own wisdom, "You shouldn't gamble such extravagant money... What if you had lost it all?"
"That's why it's called a gamble," Alex said, still putting in the money. He could easily stuffed it all inside with a wave of his wand, but from the looks of it, he wanted to rub a few faces.
"You..." Hermine wanted to argue, but before she could continue, she was interrupted.
"Excuse me..."
