Chapter 3: Learning from the Birds That Stay
Jin Hu followed Bernie into the bar, where the music was soothing and some men and women were swaying gently to the rhythm with their hands free or holding glasses of wine while chatting softly, and others who got excited hugged each other and kissed passionately.
Bernie walked past a waiter and said two sentences, the waiter then led the two of them inside, through the crowd, to a table, where Jin Hu saw the waiter remove a reserved sign from it. Meanwhile, Bernie took advantage of no one noticing and slipped a green ticket into the waiter's hand.
Jin Hu sat down directly on the semi-circular red leather sofa next to the table and said to Bernie, "Have you reserved a seat?"
"What table did you reserve?" Bernie glanced at Jinhu then smiled and said: "You thought it was this one? It's not the one I reserved, I just asked the waiter if there were any guests who hadn't arrived yet, to let us use the table for a bit! The waiter said we have half an hour!"
"Oh!" Jin Hu nodded, so he had taken advantage of others' kindness.
The wine had not been served yet when Bernie's phone rang. After speaking for a couple of sentences, he said to Jinhu: "Kim is coming right away."
"He's not going out to eat with a woman? How come he's coming over now?" Jin Hu asked, looking at Berni.
Bernie said: "There must be something wrong with the woman, when he comes over you don't ask him and he will say it himself".
In a short while, the waiter brought wine for the two of them. Bernie took a sip from his cup and said to Jinhu: "Take a look around, if you see any decent-looking girls, go chat with them, buddy! In front of us, they're all over 100 kg of female hormones, can't you feel it?"
After listening to Berni's words, Jin Hu looked around and saw that all the women in sight were beauties, gathered in twos and threes, chatting with each other. He saw a woman smiling at a man, who smiled back and walked over to her, and the two of them hit it off. It was likely that they would soon be sharing a big bed together.
Jin Hu smiled and said: "If you see someone you like, go ahead first, I'll take a look for a while."
"Hey, buddy! A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush! Just take a look and that's it. After one night, who knows if you'll ever meet again? Don't be so picky. I'm outta here!" He stood up and walked towards the three women sitting not far away.
Jin Hu's wine cup was still half full when Jin Mu suddenly appeared.
"How did you get here so quickly?" Jin Hu looked at Kim and asked.
"We're just going to eat nearby," Kim sat down and shouted at the waiter, pointing to the table to bring wine: "Don't mention it, today is really unlucky. After dinner, I suggest going to my place. That woman said she wants to take it slow!"
Jin Hu smiled and shrugged: "Then you'll have something to do during the day from now on!"
Kim listened and looked at Jinhu and said: "Brian! Do you understand women or not? When she says she wants to take it slow, it means she wants to develop a relationship." Thinking that Jinhu didn't understand, he added another sentence: "A real relationship!"
"Oh!" Jin Hu nodded: "In other words, you want a booty call! She wants to find someone to marry!"
"Absolutely right!" Kim exclaimed to Jinhu, "I'm like a port, where ships come and go from time to time. If you want to dock permanently, then send the ship to the scrapyard!"
Got it! A good word " Gang Wan" was ruined by Jin Mu again. Just as Jin Hu thought of this, a female voice rang out: "How did you sit in our designated position?"
Jin Hu raised his head and saw three women standing at the edge of the stage, looking at Kim and himself. One of them, a woman with burgundy hair, asked Kim.
"Alright! Anyway, you're three people and we're also three people. Let's get together and we'll pay for today's drinks, what do you think?" Kim said to the woman who spoke up.
Jin Hu saw that among the three women, there was an Asian girl with a high-end outfit and a bag with small floral patterns that even domestic vegetable-purchasing mothers could carry. Jin Hu estimated that this person was genuine, looking at the woman's demeanor, possibly Chinese. The three girls were all quite tall, the shortest white girl was over 1.7 meters, and Jin Hu wondered what women had been eating these days, as his own height of 1.75 meters was now almost invisible when standing in front of them in America.
"What's going on?" Bernie appeared out of nowhere, looking at the three women and listening to Kim for a moment before saying, "Yeah, that's okay! If you don't like us, we'll leave right away." As he spoke, Bernie raised his hands, indicating he meant no harm.
Maybe Bernie is a bit more handsome, and after whispering for a few seconds, the three women agreed.
Separated, the three of them sat down next to Jim, the Asian girl sat next to Bernie, and the shortest white girl sat next to Kim. On the other hand, among the three men, the shortest one, Jinhu, got the tallest girl, a red-haired white girl.
Bernie and Kim were old hands at the flower arrangement, and in no time they had the three women giggling and chatting away. Jinhu, on the other hand, was a man of few words, mainly because he felt that the red-haired girl beside him wasn't interested in him. Jinhu's intuition was sharp, and as soon as the woman sat down next to him, he could tell that she had no interest in him at all - unlike the two girls who were already practically in Bernie and Kim's arms.
Jin Hu wasn't interested in coaxing the women around him. Firstly, Jin Hu wouldn't do that. From childhood to university, he had only seen people chasing after girls, holding a bouquet of flowers and kneeling down under the girl's dormitory, shouting "Whoever, I love you!" At that time, Jin Hu thought it was like being a fool, but his roommates told him this was called romance. Jin Hu then felt that he didn't have much fate with romance in this lifetime. Of course, Jin Hu underestimated himself and his lack of fate with romance, as he had actually taken a step into debauchery.
In Jin Hu's heart, these women who came out to do it didn't make much of a difference. One got paid and the other didn't, but that was all. Of course, Jin Hu wasn't discriminatory, he just didn't care. When he gained something, he didn't feel particularly happy, and when he lost something, he didn't feel particularly sad. It was all just the same to him. At most, he'd let Deng Ken get himself a high-end model. The phrase "without desires, one is strong" described Jin Hu's current state perfectly.
Jin Hu thought that being uninterested was the best, but the red-haired girl Lin Dake sitting next to him didn't think so. Although she didn't have any interest in Jin Hu, as a woman, she liked being pursued by men, even if she didn't have any thoughts about this person. She was waiting for Jin Hu to make a move, and at first, she thought Jin Hu was just playing hard to get.
"Where are you from?" Lin Da finally couldn't help but ask Jin Hu.
Jin Hu listened and paused for a moment: "Not long after coming from China".
"Do you know Jenny?" Lin Da said following the Asian girl, and Jin Hu was certain that the one who had just leaned into Bernie's arms was a Chinese person.
"Where is your hometown?" Jenny asked Jinhu.
"Jiangbian Minshan," Jin Hu said.
Jenny listened and said to Jinhu, "Is that a mountainous area?" Looking at Jinhu nodding, she said, "My dad did business over there before, I followed him there, it's really remote. I couldn't have imagined that there would be such a poor place by the river, I'm from Haiwu."
"That rich place" Jin Hu heard the woman say, his heart was a bit unhappy, hearing others use a tone of disdain to talk about his hometown made Jin Hu a bit displeased.
Jenny looked at Jinhu and smiled: "My dad sent me here for further study."
Jin Hu looked at this woman who was almost crawling into Bernie's arms and thought to herself: Your dad is rich, he sent you abroad to study, are you really here to study? You're probably here to pick up birds!
After chatting for a while, Bernie and Kim, the two adulterous couples, seemed to be overwhelmed with spring feelings. Kim hugged the woman in his arms and stood up: "Let's go back" He said, taking out his wallet from his pocket, counting out a few bills and putting them on the table.
Bernie also stood up with Jenny. Only Jin Hu followed Lin Da, and the two of them were thirty centimeters apart.
As soon as they went out the door, Lin Da said to the two women: "I'll take a taxi back, you two have fun!"
"Come along with us," said Mary in Kim's arms.
"Never mind!" Lin Da said to Mali.
"Let Brian send you off," Kim said with a hint to Jinhu, wanting him to make one last effort.
Jin Hu looked at Jin Mu's gesture and said to Lin Da, "Why don't you come with us too? There are rooms over there, I can arrange one for you."
After listening to Jin Hu's words, Lin Da looked at the eyes of his two female companions and finally nodded in agreement. Since that was the case, others were in pairs, so naturally Lin Da would ride in Jin Hu's car.
On the car, Jin Hu followed Kim's car, Lin Da followed Jin Hu and was silent for a while before turning her head to ask Jin Hu: "You seem to have no interest in me, am I not pretty?"
Jin Hu raised his head and looked at the road ahead: "Are you interested in me?" He asked Lin Da back, you're not interested in me, are you thinking that I'll climb up and beg for your attention? You think too highly of yourself.
"You're a weird guy!" Lin Da looked at Jin Hu and said, "But you do fit my impression of Chinese people, not talking much, diligent and hardworking."
"Jenny isn't your friend either, is she also Chinese?" Jin Hu said.
"She doesn't quite match the image I had in mind, but you do! Jenny is different, she's passionate and outgoing. I originally thought Chinese people were conservative when it comes to sex, but after meeting Jenny, I realized I was wrong, we're not that different from each other."
Jin Hu listened and didn't respond, focusing on the road ahead. Conservative? Maybe, anyway Jin Hu couldn't be considered conservative, a little rascal from a small village, who doesn't distinguish between good and evil, can't be considered conservative.
