Volume 5 – Chapter 25

“This is… the warehouse boss has us leave stuff at?” Caleb was looking around in confusion as I led them to stop in front of the warehouse.

“Yup.” I looked out the passenger side window.

This time, Caleb drove. It felt weird riding shotgun with two henchmen in the back and Caleb acting suck-up next to me. I was starting to feel like I was part of the underworld. Then again, the car had a ton of room and made me feel more like we were a military unit. They bought a massive bck SUV. That was where the rest of the money I had given them had gone. I felt bad for assuming it had all gone into drugs.

Although it was bought used, it was kept in good shape and Caleb had gotten a good deal on it. He thought that driving me around would be a part of his role in the future, so he purchased the car with the intent of driving me around town. It had enough room to sit six, and it had the feel of one of those cars you might mount a turret on top of. I wouldn’t necessarily be against getting a turret on top of this vehicle, considering what we were about to do.

“Why are we here?” Caleb asked.

The sun had set and it was starting to grow dark. I pulled open the door and took a step outside.

  “To get armed.”

“Boss… I didn’t feel like we had to say anything, but we have weapons.” Caleb spoke awkwardly, pulling his shirt to the side to reveal a gun.

“Not like these,” I responded with a shrug.

The three men didn’t have any choice but to get out and follow me. En route from Caleb’s hideout, I had been working with Cecelia the entire time. She had already shut down and hidden the majority of the equipment that might cause some questions, leaving the stuff that was left. The underground area beneath the mall had been filled with all kinds of stuff, and while a good portion of it had been distributed in the defense of Ascension HQ, I had also brought back a ton of technology to Earth.

I took them to that area and began to pull out the items I had already decided on. I began to hand them a few items at a time.

“This is…” Caleb had a furrowed brow as he looked at the junk I was casually shoving into their hands.

Most of it was clothing, and the rest looked abstract enough that it didn’t necessarily resemble weaponry.

“Put the clothing on,” I ordered. “It doesn’t look like much, but it will resist bullets.”

“S-seriously? This feels thin. What’s it made out of? I’ve seen Kevr and this is like 1/3rd the thickness…”

I gave him a narrowed-eyed look, and he had the good conscious to blush. “Sorry, Boss, we’ll put it on immediately.”

I went farther back into the more hidden stuff, pulling out a few guns. These guys had self-replicating bullets, much like the smart rifle that I had given Katarina. It didn’t have any of the special attacks though. It was just a basic semi-automatic fire. I was told they had enough of a punch to discourage a murder dragon, so they were probably enough to deal with these guys. I picked out the best weapon for myself though.

  “Laser Shot.”

“It uses energy cells. A round is ten shots. You currently have enough for three roads.” Cecelia expined.

It was a mixture of a shotgun and a ser gun. The range was pretty decent, and it sent out a shot that covered a rge range for anyone like me who wasn’t a particurly good aim. From what Cecelia said, it was a wealthy person's home defense weapon of choice. This was because it wasn’t tactically very useful in that world. The ser shot could be blocked by any energy shield. It was useless against mech armor. However, in my world that didn’t have such preventions, it’d be a devastating weapon.

I turned it on, and it lit up with a hum. I then grabbed three other rifles and headed back. The men were already dressed, and compared to the baggy clothing they had before, they gave off a completely different vibe. The suits were grey, and since they all matched, they gave off the feeling of a uniform. More than that, they were extremely slick in design, and looked vaguely intimidating, like a swat team. They were looking at each other’s outfits with wide eyes while complementing the outfit.

“I’ve never worn anything this comfortable. I swear it changed to my shape,” One of the henchmen said.

“It’s thermal too. I was feeling a bit chilly, but with this on, I feel fine,” The other replied.

“I trust you can use these.” I pulled out the rifles, causing the men to cry out.

“I’ve never fired something like this before, but I can figure it out.” One of the men ughed, a look of admiration on his face as he took the weapon.

“I’ve never seen anything high-tech like this before,” Caleb said. “Boss, with this technology… I think I realized who you are.”

“What?” I looked at him while hiding the worry in my expression.

“You’re some military contractor, aren’t you?” He asked.

“Oh…” I coughed. “Something like that.”

“I knew it!” He grinned. “Working with you was the right choice! Our Boss is the best. With gear like this, those greedy assholes won’t know what hit them!”

I was a bit speechless. He was contempting me and talking about making the right choice, but I had a sve colr on him, so there hadn’t been a choice at all. Well, at least they were more motivated and weren’t looking like they were marching to their death anymore.

“Even with this equipment, they outnumber us by a lot. The best we can do is a hit and run.” One of the henchmen stated as he looked over his gun. “Uh… where are the clips?”

“Don’t worry about the clips,” I responded awkwardly. “And don’t worry about this gang either. Just follow me and you’ll be fine.”

If I had said that before giving them this equipment, they would have given me a dubious look, but now they nodded. I had already handed them each piece of equipment that likely cost as much as that car out front. They were far more priceless than that since such technology didn’t exist in this world. The combat armor I gave them wasn’t as effective as mech armor, but it still could absorb most bullets. The rifles themselves could infinitely regenerate ammo, an ability that did not exist in my world.

I considered taking some mechs or turrets along as reassurance, but they would surely stand out in this world. All I had here was enough to guard my warehouse, and I didn’t have the time or willpower to head back and try to procure more for this event. Based on the simutions Cecelia had run in advance, I had a 90% chance that we’d be able to turn out ahead in this battle.

“Head to the docks,” I ordered.

“Y-yes, Boss!” He only just avoided saluting before he took the wheel and we started heading downtown.

The docks weren’t the direction of Caleb’s hideout, but it was still a worn-out portion of the city that had seen better days. By this point, it was te in the night and the docks were near empty. I was thinking we were wasting our time, but Caleb assured me that the dock master would still be awake. We drove to a small shack that was sandwiched between two rge dock warehouses. I would have missed it if Caleb wasn’t guiding the way. The air smelled strongly of fish, and it was difficult to make out much in the dark.

Caleb took one look at me, nodded, and then banged the door. The banging was loud and echoed throughout the dock.

“Hey! Old man! Open the damn door.” Caleb shouted.

As he was still knocking, there was a click and the door opened. Caleb was about to shout again, but his eyes and fist froze as he id eyes on a young girl who had answered the door. She looked to be Chinese, with short bck and dark eyes. She had a very petite appearance but looked at us fiercely.

“Grandfather is sick, why are you knocking on our door so te at night?” she demanded.

“Uhhh…” Caleb seemed to be all for intimidating the old man, but as soon as a young girl in her teens appeared, his mouth was suddenly full of cotton.

I shoved him aside irritably and smiled at her. “My name is Daniel. I was hoping to do some business with your father. I’m in the need of supplies, and he seems to be the man I need to talk to.”

She made a face. “You’re talking about that illegal smuggling ring, aren’t you? I told grandpa to get out of that stuff. His heart isn’t good and he can’t handle that kind of stress anymore, yet you people still keep coming and trying to bribe him with dirty money! Well, I dropped out of private school, so grandpa no longer needs the money, do you hear?”

I lifted my hands defensively. “Hey, I didn’t say anything about smuggling. I just want to buy some goods off the boats, okay? I don’t want anything illegal.”

To be honest, the entire thing seemed shady from the get-go. I was pretty sure that proper licensing wasn’t going through when it came to these items, but seeing as I was sending them to another world, it was probably for the best that their paper trail was kind of questionable. However, I wouldn’t admit to doing anything illegal unless I was first told it was illegal.

She looked at me suspiciously. “You’re not doing anything illegal?”

“I promise.” I dispyed my hands for her.

After a moment, she gave a stiff nod. “You may come in for five minutes. Five minutes is all you get!”

“Don’t worry, five minutes is all I need,” I smirked.
