Season 3: chapter 12 : Pag

The practice yard of House Valcrest was alive with the sounds of a noble house preparing for war. Polished armor gleamed, reflecting the morning sun. Stable hands whispered to nervous steeds, and a handful of hopefuls, squires and knights alike, swung practice swords, dreaming of glory in the upcoming tournament, each strike echoing with ambition. At the yard's center, Pag became a whirlwind of controlled motion. His obsidian staff deflected a brutal strike from Eryk’s inked fist, sparks flying as the force of magic met the strange, dark material, the sound echoing like the crack of distant thunder across the grounds. Darleyn circled like a predator, her rapiers "flashing like silver lightning," seeking any opening in Pag’s defense.

Sweat plastered strands of Pag’s dark hair against his forehead. Hours of relentless training pushed his body and the volatile Infernal Vanguard class to their absolute limits. The forced change to the class, while initially unwelcome, had stoked a new fire within him. No longer simply a pyromancer, he was now a warrior, a survivor, a being of "controlled chaos". He had met the change head-on, adapting to his new reality with a fierce tenacity. But the burning desire to merge his pyroclasm with his new class, to reach his potential and become the Doomflame Sentinel, still smoldered within him.

“Again!” Pag gasped, muscles screaming, as he ducked beneath a wild strike enhanced by Eryk's Monk fighting style. Lashing out with a swift kick, he struck true. The force of the blow sent the dwarf stumbling backward, creating a precious pocket of space that allowed Pag to refocus on Darleyn’s relentless assault.

“Looking winded, fire-boy,” she taunted, her silver eyes gleaming with amusement as she closed in. Her rapiers, like extensions of her will, darted toward his exposed sides.

Pag grinned, the scent of ozone filling his nostrils as he channeled the infernal heat simmering beneath his skin. Twin jets of obsidian flame erupted from his palms, forcing Darleyn to leap away, her taunt replaced with a sharp cry of surprise. The cobblestones where she had stood moments before were now scarred black, smoke rising in thin tendrils toward the sky.

“Not bad, not bad at all,” Eryk said, catching his breath and flexing his inked hands with a grin. “But you’re still predictable.”

Before Pag could retort, a shout echoed from the edge of the training grounds, interrupting their sparring. “Message for Pag, Eryk, and Darleyn!”

The three warriors turned as one to see a messenger of Lord Adrien Valcrest approaching, clad in the house colors of crimson and gold. The messenger carried a sealed scroll. His expression was formal, betraying nothing of the message's contents.

“Lord Adrien requests your presence this evening,” the messenger announced, offering the scroll to Pag. “He has expressed that it is a matter of some urgency.”

Pag accepted the scroll, his fingers brushing against the embossed Valcrest sigil. A knot of unease tightened in his stomach as he glanced at Darleyn and Eryk, their faces mirroring his apprehension.

“Did he say what it’s about?” Pag asked, breaking the seal and scanning the message.

The messenger hesitated, shifting his weight, his gaze darting nervously as he chose his words with care. “Only that he believes he may have found… a path forward, regarding a certain… interest you expressed,” he said, carefully avoiding any specifics.

Pag’s heart quickened its pace. He exchanged another look with Darleyn and Eryk, a silent conversation passing between them. The message was shrouded in vagueness, yet the implication was unmistakable. Adrien knew of Pag’s consuming desire to integrate fire and shadow, to become the Doomflame Sentinel. He might have uncovered a way for Pag to finally claim that forbidden power.

“We’ll be there,” Pag said, rolling up the scroll. He dismissed the messenger with a curt nod and turned back to his companions. “Looks like our training will have to wait.” We have a meeting with Lord Adrien.”

Darleyn raised a delicate eyebrow, her silver eyes sharp with curiosity. “Think he finally found what you need?”

Pag shrugged, a complex blend of anticipation and apprehension churning within him. "I really don't know. But something tells me this meeting could change everything."

Pag ran a hand through his sweat-dampened hair, the scent of ozone and burnt stone clinging to his skin. The thrill of the spar had quickly been replaced by a knot of nervous anticipation. "A path forward," Adrien had hinted, but paths could be treacherous, especially those paved by powerful lords with unknown motives.

"What do you think he wants?" Eryk rumbled, his brow furrowed with suspicion. "This feels…convenient. Especially given everything that's been happening."

Darleyn paced, her movements restless. "It's Adrien Valcrest. Nothing he does is without calculation. If he's offering you a way to become this 'Doomflame Sentinel', there's definitely a price."

Pag sighed. He knew they were right. Power always came with a cost, and the power to control both flame and shadow likely demanded a steep price indeed. He glanced down at the Valcrest sigil on the scroll, the crimson and gold seeming to mock him with their opulence.

"We don't have much of a choice, do we?" Pag said, his voice tinged with resignation. "If Adrien does have what I need…what we need, to face what's coming, I can't afford to ignore it." He looked at Darleyn and Eryk, his expression pleading for their understanding. "But we go in cautious. Agreed?"

"Agreed," Darleyn said, stopping her pacing and fixing him with a steady gaze. "We stick together. And if it smells like a trap, we get out."

"I'll bring my ink and brush," Eryk added, a grim smile spreading across his face. "Just in case this 'path forward' leads through a few skulls."

With a shared nod of determination, the three of them began to make their way toward their quarters to prepare for the meeting.

As they walked, Pag couldn't shake a sense of unease. Dedisco's words echoed in his mind: "Every choice you make has consequences". He trusted Darleyn and Eryk with his life, but he couldn't shake the feeling that he was walking a path alone, a path that would ultimately force him to make a choice with far-reaching consequences.

Entering their lavish suite, the trappings of wealth seemed to press in on Pag, a stark reminder of the chasm that separated him from the Valcrest family. Servants had laid out an array of fine clothes, clearly expecting them to dress for the occasion.

"Well, this is a bit much," Darleyn commented, eyeing the silk gowns and velvet jackets with disdain. "I prefer my robes."

"We should change. It's a sign of respect," Pag said, grabbing a simple tunic from the bed. "Whether we like it or not, we're playing Adrien's game now, and we have to play by his rules."

As they dressed, a tense silence settled over the room, each lost in their own thoughts. Pag changed quickly, his mind racing. He glanced at the others, a feeling of trepidation settling over him. What exactly, was he walking into?

Finally, as dusk began to settle over the city, casting long shadows across the training grounds, Pag, Darleyn, and Eryk emerged from their quarters, ready to face whatever Lord Adrien Valcrest had in store. It was time for their meeting. It was time to see if the path forward was a road to power or a carefully laid trap. It was time to face destiny, whatever form it took.

As dusk painted the sky with hues of crimson and gold, Pag, Darleyn, and Eryk left their suite, ready to meet with Lord Adrien. Pag donned a simple tunic, while Darleyn chose her robes, and Eryk brought his ink and brush .

As they walked, Pag was reminded of Dedisco's words: "Every choice you make has consequences" . This, coupled with the opulence around them, made him feel uneasy .

They navigated the Valcrest halls and were soon met by a pair of guards clad in the family's colors, who led them to a secluded chamber . The room was dimly lit, illuminated by a roaring fireplace and a handful of strategically placed candles. Lord Adrien Valcrest stood before the hearth, his back to them, seemingly lost in thought .

He turned as they entered, his face an unreadable mask. "Welcome, Pag, Darleyn, Eryk," he said, his voice smooth . "I trust your accommodations have been satisfactory?"

"More than satisfactory, my Lord," Pag replied, offering a respectful bow . "We appreciate your hospitality."

"Please, dispense with the formalities," Adrien said, gesturing towards a trio of chairs arranged around a low table. "We have much to discuss, and little time to waste" .

As they settled into their seats, Pag couldn't help but notice the details of the chamber :

Tapestries depicting scenes of Valcrest family triumphs hung on the walls.

A massive desk overflowing with documents sat in one corner, a testament to Adrien's administrative duties.

Scattered around the room were various arcane artifacts, hinting at Adrien's knowledge of magic.

"I understand you seek a path to evolve, Pag," Adrien began, his gaze piercing . "To integrate fire and shadow and become something greater."

Pag nodded, his heart pounding with anticipation . "It's my understanding that such a path exists. And that you may know how to reach it."

Adrien smiled, a predatory glint in his eyes . "Indeed, I do. But such power comes at a cost, Pag. Are you willing to pay it?"

This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.

"I find myself increasingly irritated," Pag retorted, his voice laced with controlled frustration. "I must confess, I find myself increasingly irritated. What more could I possibly pay or promise? We are already representing House Valcrest in the upcoming tournament, risking our lives and reputations for your benefit".

Adrien steepled his fingers, his gaze unwavering. "I ask not for coin, nor potential prestige". "What I seek is far more valuable: a promise".

Pag frowned, his unease deepening. "A promise? What manner of promise?"

"A boon," Adrien clarified, his voice dropping to a near whisper. "At a later date, when the time is right, I may call upon you to fulfill a specific request. It may be dangerous, it may be unpleasant, but it will be essential to the future of House Valcrest."

Darleyn shifted in her seat, her silver eyes narrowing with suspicion. "And what guarantee do we have that this 'boon' will not violate our consciences, or endanger innocent lives?"

Adrien sighed, his expression turning serious. "I understand your concern, Darleyn. I cannot offer you a guarantee, save for my word as a Valcrest". "I assure you, I would never knowingly ask you to commit an act of pure evil. But the world is a complicated place, and sometimes, difficult choices must be made for the greater good".

Eryk, who had remained silent until now, spoke up, his voice low and gravelly. "And what if we refuse this boon, when the time comes? What will be the consequences?"

Adrien's gaze hardened slightly. "Refusal would be… unwise," he said, his voice laced with a subtle threat. "House Valcrest does not take betrayal lightly. But let us not dwell on hypotheticals. I believe that you will find my request to be reasonable, and that you will honor your commitment."

He leaned forward, his gaze locking with Pag's. "There is another matter that I must discuss with you, one of even greater urgency". "It concerns the path you seek, the integration of fire and shadow. It is a dangerous path, Pag, one fraught with peril. There is a reason why the class was forgotten it seems."

Pag's heart skipped a beat, his apprehension intensifying. "What do you mean?"

"I have read accounts in long-forgotten tomes of individuals who sought similar power," Adrien said, his voice low. "These texts spoke of a condition known as Umbralysis, which afflicts those who attempt to wield the power of shadow without the proper safeguards or the necessary strength of will. The symptoms are unpleasant like madness, corruption, and a slow descent into oblivion."

Adrien continued, "The tomes recounted the tale of a skilled pyromancer that sought to become a Doomflame Sentinel, a master of both fire and shadow". He further explained that this pyromancer delved into forbidden knowledge and performed rituals that should have been left undisturbed.

Adrien relayed what he read, "He was warned of the dangers of tampering with shadow and blurring the lines between light and darkness. He became a legend and figure of fear because he mastered spells that were thought to be impossible. But the shadow was slowly corrupting him. His skin grew pale, his eyes hollow, and his presence seemed to drain the life from everything around him".

"The accounts stated that this pyromancer became obsessed with power and consumed by a hunger that could never be satisfied, seeing betrayals lurking in every shadow". Adrien added, "His spells grew darker and fueled by a malice that was not his own until the man we once knew was gone".

Adrien said that the tomes stated that the pyromancer succumbed to Umbralysis completely and became a monster driven by nothing but hatred and destruction, corrupting everything he touched. It took a coalition of powerful mages to bring him down, but even in death, his shadow lingered.

"I implore you, Pag," Adrien said, his voice laced with concern, "reconsider this path altogether. The power you seek is alluring, but could destroy you. Should you succumb to Umbralysis, you would become a danger to yourself, and to all those around you."

Pag listened intently as Lord Adrien recounted the cautionary tale from the long-forgotten tomes, the weight of his words settling heavily upon him. The image of the pyromancer consumed by Umbralysis, twisted into a monster of pure darkness, was unsettling. He glanced at Darleyn and Eryk, their expressions mirroring his own apprehension.

Was he truly prepared to walk this path, to delve into the forbidden knowledge and risk his very soul?

Was the power he sought worth the potential cost?

He thought of the icon of Dedisco pulsing faintly on his character sheet, a constant reminder of the pact he had made and the god's ever-present influence. He had already walked a dangerous path, flirting with darkness and chaos, but this… this was different. This was a descent into oblivion, a complete and utter loss of self.

"I appreciate your concern, Lord Adrien," Pag said, his voice low and thoughtful. "But I cannot deny the power that calls to me. The integration of fire and shadow… it feels like my destiny."

"But destiny is not always kind, Pag," Adrien countered, his voice laced with urgency. "Sometimes, the path we are meant to walk is the path that leads to our destruction."

Pag fell silent, his mind racing. He knew that Adrien spoke from a place of genuine concern, that he was not simply trying to dissuade him for his own benefit. But the allure of the Doomflame Sentinel was too strong to ignore, the potential too great to simply walk away.

"I understand the risks, Lord Adrien," Pag said, his voice firm despite the tremor of doubt that ran through him. "But I cannot allow fear to dictate my choices. I must see this through, must discover the truth for myself."

"Then I can only implore you to proceed with caution," Adrien said, his gaze intense. "Seek out knowledge, find allies you can trust, and never, ever underestimate the power of shadow. For once it takes hold, it may never let go."

"Very well, Pag," Adrien said with a sigh of regret, a hint of resignation in his voice. "I have done what I can to warn you. I can only hope that you possess the strength and wisdom to navigate the darkness that lies ahead".

Adrien paused, then continued, "After you complete the first round of the tournament, an opportunity will arise for you to travel to a place that will be a nexus of the power you seek" . He explained that this location was shrouded in mystery and peril but held the potential to unlock the secrets of the Doomflame Sentinel and the integration of fire and shadow . "Be warned, however," Adrien added, "this place is not for the faint of heart. Only those with unwavering resolve and exceptional skill can hope to survive its trials" .

Adrien then turned his attention to Darleyn, a thoughtful expression on his face. "While we are discussing potential paths, Darleyn, I believe there is a second class that you should consider, one that aligns well with your skills and abilities".

He explained that he had been researching her combat style and magical affinities and had come across references to a class known as the 'Rift Weaver' . This class, he said, would allow her to manipulate space and time, creating portals and manipulating the flow of energy on the battlefield.

"The Rift Weaver could complement your existing skills, providing unparalleled tactical flexibility and control," Adrien said. "Imagine being able to teleport yourself and your allies across the arena, or to slow down your opponents, leaving them vulnerable to attack."

"Furthermore," Adrien continued, "the Rift Weaver possesses the ability to disrupt the flow of magic, weakening enemy spells and creating openings for your allies". This, he believed, would make her an invaluable asset in the tournament, particularly against mages and other spellcasters.

Adrien cautioned that the Rift Weaver class was notoriously difficult to master, requiring a deep understanding of spatial geometry and temporal mechanics. However, he believed that Darleyn possessed the intelligence, discipline, and natural talent to excel in this role. "It is merely a suggestion, of course," Adrien said, his gaze softening slightly. "The decision is ultimately yours. But I believe that the Rift Weaver class holds the potential to unlock your true potential and elevate you to a level of power that you never thought possible"

Darleyn listened intently to Lord Adrien's description of the Rift Weaver class, her mind already racing with the possibilities he presented. The ability to manipulate space and time, to control the battlefield with such precision, was an alluring prospect.

It would certainly give them an edge in the tournament, allowing them to outmaneuver their opponents and exploit their weaknesses.

The disruption of magic also sounded particularly useful given the number of mages that may appear .

However, she also recognized the challenges that came with such power. The Rift Weaver class was said to be difficult to master, requiring a deep understanding of complex concepts.

Darleyn considered whether she could juggle learning these skills along with everything else . Could she truly dedicate herself to such a demanding path while still fulfilling her obligations to Pag and the team? It was a lot to consider, and time was of the essence given the upcoming tournament.

"Thank you, Lord Adrien," Darleyn said, her voice thoughtful. "I appreciate you sharing your insights with me. The Rift Weaver class certainly sounds intriguing, and I will give it serious consideration".

Pag, meanwhile, was still processing Adrien's warning about Umbralysis and his offer to help find a nexus of power.

The image of the pyromancer consumed by shadow was still fresh in his mind, a chilling reminder of the potential consequences of his ambition.

Yet, the allure of the Doomflame Sentinel, the promise of wielding both fire and shadow, was too strong to ignore. He had come too far, sacrificed too much, to simply turn back now .

"When will this opportunity arise, Lord Adrien?" Pag asked, his voice laced with anticipation. "When will I be able to travel to this nexus of power?"

"After you complete the first round of the tournament," Adrien replied, his gaze unwavering. "Assuming you are victorious, a guide will approach you. This individual will know the way to this nexus. They will test you, and you will need to prove yourself before they deem you worthy to receive the next steps. Be warned; many have attempted this task, but none have ever returned."

Adrien stood, signaling the end of their meeting. "I have shared all that I can for now. The path ahead is yours to forge, and I wish you the best of luck. May your choices be wise, and may your courage never fail you".

Pag, Darleyn, and Eryk exchanged knowing glances as Lord Adrien concluded the meeting, a silent acknowledgment of the weight of the information they had just received. The room, once filled with lively discussion, now seemed charged with a palpable tension, the air thick with unspoken questions and lingering doubts.

With a final nod of respect to their benefactor, the trio turned and made their way towards the exit, their footsteps echoing softly in the opulent hall. As they stepped out into the dimly lit corridor, a collective sigh escaped their lips, a release of the breath they had been unknowingly holding.

"Well, that was certainly a lot to take in," Darleyn murmured, her brow furrowed in thought. "A nexus of power, a mysterious guide, a tournament to win… it seems our journey is just beginning".

Eryk nodded in agreement, his gaze fixed on the intricate patterns that adorned the hallway walls. "And a warning about being consumed by darkness," he added, his voice low and thoughtful. "That's never a good sign".

Pag remained silent for a moment, his mind still wrestling with the implications of Adrien's words. The lure of the Doomflame Sentinel was undeniable, but the risk of Umbralysis loomed large, a constant reminder of the potential cost of his ambition.

"We have much to discuss," Pag finally said, his voice firm despite the tremor of doubt that ran through him. "But for now, let us focus on the task at hand. We must prepare for the tournament, hone our skills, and trust that the path ahead will reveal itself in due time".

With a shared sense of purpose, the trio continued down the corridor, their footsteps growing fainter as they disappeared into the labyrinthine depths of Lord Adrien's estate. Behind them, Lord Adrien remained in the private lounge, his figure silhouetted against the soft glow of the chandelier, contemplating the choices he had made and the challenges that lay ahead. The fate of House Valcrest, and perhaps even the Eternal Commonwealth, rested on the shoulders of these three adventurers, and he could only hope that they possessed the strength and wisdom to navigate the treacherous path that awaited them.
