Chapter 550: The boundaries of the soul.

After pushing back the Menorian invasion, life became peaceful on Eogis.

A decade went on, with no major events going through.

Yet something needed to happen. An event so important that even Alyssia and Alaric couldn't prevent.

The separation of the two factions.

Originally, through the throes of war, angels and demons were to be disjointed.

Yet, even after Tetra left Noah's remaining traces in the factions' hands, nothing happened.

Both showed respect and cared for the items, and there was no act of vandalism or theft ever happening.

As per the laws of the world, something had to be done, or the strings of 'Fate' would find a way to break them apart.

While this was an option, leaving the destiny of the factions in uncertainty wasn't a move Alyssia was prepared to acknowledge.

Instead, she began moving toward the correct path.

Through methodical planning and careful actions, she managed to push both factions into the correct path.

The first step was to break both factions.

It turned out to work better than she had expected.

With the growth of the settlement came the issue of expansion. People needed more space for their homes, while more and more families were forming.

One rule of thumb took place naturally, and this was the coupling between both factions.

Seeing an angel and a demon being together was not a sight many would witness.

Out of the twenty thousand inhabitants, around 10% of the couples forming were mixed.

Oftentimes than not, demons would enter a relationship with another demon, and an angel would find love with another angel.

It wasn't that they were unattracted to the other half of the settlement; simply that the natural order of the world made it easier for them to enter a relationship with someone with the same traits.

But, at one point, a settlement wasn't enough anymore.

The number of people living there surpassed the realm of a settlement. It could be called a city, with no one arguing over that truth.

The plan to expand started as Alyssia shared her thoughts with everyone.

It took time, but everything fell into place rapidly.

They dismantled many homes and displaced many people.

The demons moved north, while the angels moved south.

In between, where the original settlement was, the couples of mixed factions lived peacefully with no fear of being frowned upon by their peers.

At long last, an age of stability fell upon both factions.

To follow the events that originally caused the suffering of many through countless conflicts, Alaric crafted the perfect excuse.

By making both factions take part in mock battles, the history of struggle between them continued.

But instead of it being a deadly battle, only a friendly competition came to life, nullifying the entire reason for their downfall.

"Those are the actual events that took place in this world's history."

"Your actions, or should I say the unexpected movement of the souls immortalized inside your own, have brought a new development to what I considered 'lost'."

Orion remained still, his eyes closed and his arms crossed.

"I do not wish to remove my responsibilities in the tragedies that happened, but even Blanc's circumstantial transformation into an inverse state was out of my control."

"Looking at it objectively, what caused this continent's downfall was none other than those beings, breaching even the strongest barrier I had erected."

"I have to say, even my best attempt at slowing them down resulted in an incredible failure."

"The power to dismiss a creator's will is surely unnatural."

As he opened his eyes slightly and stared at the ground, Orion finally spoke.

"Can we return to the topic of Alyssia and Alaric for a second?"

The hazy figure tilted its head, confused. It took a little instant of processing to understand why Orion wasn't concerned about the invaders.

"I apologize. The conversation hadn't been terminated on that subject. Yet, I've taken the decision to switch to another."

"It's fine. We'll have to discuss that, too. But before I fully switch gears, I need some peace of mind."

The eye appeared apologetic, which Orion noticed.

"Putting myself in your place, I somehow understand how your thoughts work."

"As a machine, the concept of family doesn't matter as much as it does for us."

"You might understand its concept, but you were never intended to develop an ego capable of thinking apart from your role."

Nature herself knew that. She never had that 'soul' that the lower beings trudging the world she observed possessed.

With only the ability to create and influence matter, she could only hope to understand the concepts various factions developed by themselves.

"That is correct. Yet, I yearn for this knowledge."

Orion turned his gaze away and pondered. After a moment, he nodded to himself.

"If you observe us, you might come up with an answer of your own. While this will help, I believe you already hold the general understanding."

"Alyssia and Alaric always fought for each other and even pushed through their limits for their child."

"Maybe it is confusing for now, but recalling their actions might help to picture a satisfying answer to your question."

The figure of Nature appeared to absorb his word with eagerness. After a quick nod, she accepted his advice.

  "Thank you."

Orion smiled genuinely, relief in his heart. Nature wasn't as different as anyone else in the way she thought.

Seeing the figure switch back to a crossed-legged position, he observed until he received a question.

"What do you need to learn about your ancestry?"

He was waiting for such a question. With a neutral expression, he clenched his hands into fists.

"What happened to them and their child?"

Nature never brought the conclusion of their story, which insinuated that their ending hadn't changed.

But the answer he received wasn't one he expected.

"In your hands is a great power. Perhaps a quick glance in your soul would answer that query."

  Surprised, Orion appeared perplexed.

"I mean, it wouldn't be the first time I were to look in the deepest parts of my soul, but..."

"Then you shouldn't fret. Nothing in this world can escape the 'Master of the Void'."

  "..."

Putting a hand to her cheek and tapping regularly on it lightly, she appeared to think.

"Let me give you another title. It should be helpful toward your goals."

Orion's eyes flashed the instant her fingers snapped.

Grabbing his head in pain, he groaned.

"I haven't felt this ill since coming back to this time."

"Well, receiving a title isn't a gift. Like the Remnant conceptualization, you have to lose something."

"Albeit, your position only brought slight discomfort."

She appeared to giggle gleefully as Orion straightened.

"The 'Master of Boundaries' has successfully been created."

Leaning forward, her words seemed to caress his soul as she spoke.

Feeling as if a part of his power had been unlocked, Orion opened and closed his hands while feeling no obvious difference inside him.

Immediately, Orion closed his eyes and wandered inside the deepest part of his body: his soul.

  ...

  *Drip*

The sound of a water droplet echoed in the void.

That droplet turned into a man, who fell slowly toward an invisible ground.

As his feet met the solid ground, the scenery changed into a wide field with various buildings in the distance.

  Recognizing the place, Orion smiled.

  "The settlement."

  "Exactly so."

Hearing the voice of a man he had heard long ago, Orion glanced over his shoulder.

"So, you're the one who gave Alyssia those pieces of information. I should have known."

Walking next to him, Alaric, the 'Prince of Darkness', abruptly stopped while gazing in the distance.

  "Don't get mad at him."

Walking to his other side, Alyssia also came to a stop, a bright smile on his face.

  "Mad? Why?"

Alaric lifted his left arm and placed it on Orion's shoulder.

"Only recently have I pieced the two together. The incoherence of my memories and the notes in Alyssia's book."

"It was all thanks to you, Orion."

The man who was called many names, who ruthlessly protected his people and poured sweat and blood into creating peace, stepped in front of Orion.

"Thank you, Orion. You've given us a chance to preserve what was truly important at that time."

Genuinely dropping his head, Alaric showed, for the first time, reverence to someone.

  "You..."

Shocked, Alyssia was about to call him by his nickname, but she couldn't bring herself to do so.

"No, you're right. I should thank you, too."

Alyssia brightly smiled, giving off the signature aura that brought peace to both factions.

As Alaric straightened his face, his eyes seemed to drift somewhere behind Orion.

  "Huh?"

Confused, Orion was about to turn his head behind him, but before he could, two arms rapidly entered his peripheral vision, coming from behind him.

"I never expected to be here!"

  "So... he called you too?"

With a slight frown, Alaric crossed his arms.

"What's that reaction? Aren't you happy to see her again?"

"Of course, I'm glad! Why are you trying to make me look bad, Firefly?"

"What?! What does this pathetic 'Prince of Nothing' actually say?"

While the couple began to argue harmlessly like they did while alive, Orion glanced over his shoulder.

Dark hair entered his sight as someone else's cheek rubbed against his.

  "So you're my grandson?"

A woman in her twenties spoke softly while exuding a relaxing aura.

Orion tried to move his head slightly to the side to get away from the suffocating hug, but he couldn't.

  "Who might you be?"

Wanting to see the person who hugged him from behind, Orion asked.

  "Oh!"

Finally, the woman let go. With quick steps, she walked around him and stood in front of him.

  "I'm this dumb couple's daughter."

Pointing at the two arguing in the back, she smiled.

  "As for my name..."

As she turned to fully face him, her features came into full sight.

"My name's Amaryllis. You can call me Maryllis, just like my mother does."

An angel with ten black wings and a crescent halo stared at Orion with mischievous eyes.
