For some reason, while explaining last night’s events, Mei led Dana away from the Palace and to a carriage waiting a few blocks away.
“We could have hailed a carriage from Sanford,” Dana said.
“He’s here.” Mei opened the door.
“Who’s here? My lord!”
Inside the carriage sat Dwayne, who smiled at Dana, not recognizing Inge. “Hello. I’m-”
“Excuse me.” Dana shut the carriage door then turned to Mei. “What is he doing here?”
Mei frowned. “I told you.”
“I thought you were asking me to help you to break in first!”
“He wants to go it himself.”
“Why?”
But despite Mei’s shrug, Dana knew why. Allowing Baron Thadden to use him weighed heavily on Dwayne’s conscience, and Huan’s ridiculous lie was more than enough of an excuse to strike back. Still, even accepting that, and Dwayne’s guess that Thadden was Ybarra’s license sponsor, breaking into the baron’s office seemed drastic. Did Dwayne expect to find more letters like the ones currently hidden under the Rodion’s floorboards.

Phons, Dana had to find a way to get those letters to Dwayne before he wrecked his life looking for them.
Mei had been watching Dana’s face. “Ready?”
“Yes.” Dana gathered luzself then opened the carriage door. “Lord Dwayne Kalan? Apologies for my rudeness. I am Inge.” Lu held out luz hand.
Dwayne tentatively shook it, “Inge. So you’re who… assisted Mei with her recent acquisition?”
What a delicate way of putting that.
“Yes, I have.” Dana climbed into the carriage.
“What’s your fee?” Dwayne asked.
“I’ve paid,” said Mei, settling into the seat beside Dana.
Dwayne’s head jerked back. “You have?”
“I help my friends.”
Dwayne just stared at her.
“What?” she asked.
“I don’t you’ve ever said that before.”
“What?”
“That we’re friends.”
It suddenly became much harder to keep a stern expression. “It don’t matter who’s paying me. If we want to do this, we have to hurry.”
“Why?” asked Dwayne.
“Dame Sercombe is about to have lunch.”
