Chapter 2

A new dawn broke over the mist-shrouded land, covering a thick veil of mist that clung to every surface like a damp gray blanket. However, inside the castle there was warmth and light, which drove away the cold of the outside world.

One by one the feline trio stirred from their sleep, their bodies unfurling like lithe vines as they languidly stretched. Thunderwing, the first to wake up, arched its back, claws extended, and yawned in satisfaction. Her bright blue eyes widened as she took in the cozy surroundings before focusing on her siblings.

Ice Moon followed his sister's example, his slender frame unfolding with graceful precision. He held out a paw, flexing his fingers before reaching contentedly, his gaze meeting Stormwing's. Both cats seemed cheerful, their energy restored after a restful night.

Stone Flame, the last to rise, slowly opened his eyes, blinking, chasing away the remnants of sleep. He scanned the room, his penetrating gaze resting on every familiar detail—the tapestries that adorned the walls, the polished wooden furniture, the hearth where the quiet fire crackled merrily. His thoughts turned to the day ahead, and a decision crystallized in his mind.

"Get up, my brothers and sisters!" he exclaimed, his low voice echoing across the room. "Today we will hunt together, bringing a reward."

Thunderwing and Icemoon perked up at the announcement, their ears twitching in excitement. They knew that their brother's words were not mere chatter, but a call to action. Under Stoneflame's leadership, the clan prospered, and he always put their needs first.

With a collective rustling of fur, the three cats emerged from the narrow passageway cut in the massive oak doors. The cool morning air enveloped them, carrying the crisp smell of autumn leaves and damp earth. Stone Flame walked ahead, his broad shoulders cutting a confident silhouette against the murky mist.

As they strode along the cobblestones in silence, Thunderwing's senses picked up subtle changes in their surroundings. She felt the gusts of wind more acutely than her brothers, her slender frame unable to protect herself from the cold. Glancing sideways at Ice Moon and Stone Flame, she noticed the fine hairs on their coats standing slightly on end, a sign of the growing cold.

"Winter seems to be coming sooner than expected," she remarked, barely audible above the whisper of the fog.

Stone Flame froze, his ears swiveling to pick up Thunderwing's words. He sniffed the air, his whiskers quivering as he too felt the cold edge of the wind.

"And indeed, sister," he admitted, "this year the September cold came earlier than usual. We must be ready."

Ice Moon added: "The forest will probably be quieter now as many creatures seek refuge from the coming snows. But it means that we can meet fewer opponents during the hunt."

The older cat nodded, his jaw set firmly. "Then let's make the most of this opportunity. Our stomachs depend on it, and I will not forgive myself if my clan goes hungry."

With that he led the procession once more, his paws leaving faint prints on the dew-kissed grass as they ventured deeper into the mist-shrouded forest.

As the trio moved deeper into the forest, the mist gradually thinned, allowing rays of pale sunlight to penetrate the canopy overhead. Bright lighting danced across the moss-covered ground, casting an ethereal glow over the event.

Thunderwing perked up her ears as a distant rustling caught her attention. She crouched low, her tail twitching in anticipation. "Do you hear, brothers? Squirrels, maybe, or even a rabbit?"

Ice Moon's eyes flashed with interest. "If we're lucky, we might spot deer grazing in the clearing ahead."

Stoneflame's lips curled into a predatory grin. "Then let's continue carefully and inconspicuously. Successful hunting requires patience and strategy."

Refocusing, the three cats moved forward, their senses sharpened as they moved through the forest maze in search of their quarry.

As they neared the clearing, the sounds of the small creatures grew louder, occasionally snapping branches under their feet. Stone Flame signaled his siblings to disperse, using his unique powers to cover more territory.

Ice Moon raced ahead, his lithe figure weaving easily through the bushes. He froze periodically, his sharp ears straining to detect any sign of movement. Thunderwing followed him, her sharp nose picking up the musky scent of a nearby rodent. She crouched low, preparing to spring into action at a moment's notice.

Meanwhile, Stone Flame took center stage, his imposing presence serving as a deterrent to any potential threats. His watchful gaze scanned the perimeter, constantly watching for any signs of danger. The trio worked in perfect synchronicity, years of training and teamwork guiding their actions.

Thunderwing's instincts proved correct when she spotted a chubby squirrel scurrying up a nearby oak tree. Her eyes focused on her target and she quickly, silently leapt up, claws out. The squirrel gave a startled squeal as Thunderwing closed around her, pinning her securely against the trunk.

"Well done, sister!" Ice Moon shouted with delight in his voice. "Looks like we will have breakfast! And if you're lucky, even dinner!"

Stone Flame approached, his broad chest rising and falling with excitement. "Now let's ensure a proper kill. Thunderwing, hold the creature tight while I complete the task."

With practiced precision, Stone Flame's teeth dug into the squirrel's neck, quickly ending its struggle. He released the lifeless body and Thunderwing gently lowered it to the ground.

Hunger satisfied and bellies full, the triumphant trio began a leisurely walk back to the castle. Each cat held several prey in its jaws, the weight and warmth a satisfying reminder of their success.

As they floated down the forest path, Stoneflame couldn't help but feel a surge of pride. Their clan was truly different from the cruel warlords who ruled the other cat territories. Here, they prioritized the well-being of all members, ensuring that no one would go without food when illness struck.

"Remember, my brothers and sisters," he said, a note of seriousness in his voice, "our strength lies not only in our individual prowess, but also in our collective compassion. It is this bond that sets us apart and makes our clan truly great."

Ice Moon and Thunderwing exchanged intelligent glances, their hearts overflowing with affection for their leader and each other.

As the sun sank below the horizon, turning the sky a warm orange, the three cats emerged from the forest and approached the majestic structure of Twilight Star Castle. Its dark stone walls seemed to absorb the fading light, radiating an aura of mystery and power.

Stone Flame walked in front, his regal bearing evident even as he carried his prize. He stopped in front of the front entrance, a massive wooden door decorated with intricate carvings depicting scenes of feline triumph and victory.

With a flick of his tail, he pointed to a smaller door inside a larger one.

  Ice Moon and Thunderwing nodded.

In a smooth motion, Stone Flame pushed the smaller door with its body, revealing a dimly lit corridor behind it. The air inside was musty but familiar, carrying the smell of old stone and the faint taste of predator.

As the trio stepped out into the hallway, the heavy doors closed behind them with a resounding thud, sealing them into the heart of the castle. Flickering torches along the walls cast eerie shadows, giving the impression that they are being watched by the very spirits of their ancestors.

Stone Flame's step quickened, his paws echoing off the cold stone floor. "We have to be careful, because the castle is always buzzing with activity, even at night. Let us walk quietly and not attract attention until we reach our private chambers."

Ice Moon and Thunderwing strode beside him, their movements graceful and measured.

Walking through the winding corridors, the cats met several felines going about their evening business. Some played briskly, while others rested in the sunlight that filtered through the narrow windows high above. Everyone looked at the returning hunters with a mixture of curiosity and respect, quickly acknowledging the Stone Flame's authority by bowing their heads or subtly changing posture.

Reaching the tower where their private quarters were, Stoneflame ascended the spiral staircase, his siblings following behind him. Upstairs, a series of doors led to separate living quarters, each tailored to the preferences of its occupant.

Stone Flame stopped in front of a solid oak door adorned with a silver emblem depicting a pair of crossed swords.

With a decisive sweep of his paw, Stoneflame opened the door, revealing a spacious room lit by a single unshaded window with moonlight streaming through. The room was sparsely furnished, with a plush carpet covering the stone floor and a simple bed against one wall. There was a small table by the window, where a single candle was burning, casting a warm light. "Make yourself comfortable," ordered the leader of the crane, carefully placing the caught prey on the mat.

As the three cats sat at the table enjoying their meal, the atmosphere in the room became increasingly gloomy. Outside, the temperature dropped sharply, and the wind howled like a chorus of restless spirits. Thunderwing shivered, her smooth coat fluttering in the cold breeze that filtered through the castle's thick walls.

Her gaze drifted out the window, brooding as memories of a bygone era flooded her. Images of a golden friend, playful and kind, flashed in her memory. Golden Rozsyp, a beloved friend from youth.

Thunderwing's ears drooped as a pang of nostalgia mixed with regret coursed through her veins. She thought back to the day her once best friend announced her decision to leave and start a new clan, her heart heavy with the knowledge that their friendship would never be the same.

Stoneflame furrowed his ears, his mustache twitching as he sensed the change in mood. His emerald eyes narrowed, focusing intently on Thunderwing. What is it, sister? Why do you look so worried?

Thunderwing's tail slapped behind her, showing her concern. She met Stoneflame's gaze, her own eyes clouded with a mixture of sadness and longing. "I... I was just thinking about the Golden Scatter. Remember when we were young and she was our best friend?"

Ice Moon leaned forward, his interest piqued. "Yes, I also remember her fondly. Such a free spirit, always chasing butterflies and laughing."

Stone Flame's expression hardened, his jaws clenched. "Those were simpler times, before betrayal and treachery entered our lives."

Thunderwing's ears fell back at Stoneflame's harsh words, pain flashing across her face. She knew his anger stemmed from the Golden Placer's decision to leave and start his own clan, taking a piece of his heart in the process. But for Thunderwing, their shared past remained a bittersweet reminder of their bond.

"I understand your resentment, brother," Thunderwing said quietly, "but Golden Scatter was true to herself. She followed her dreams, even if it meant leaving us behind."

Ice Moon nodded in agreement, her voice thoughtful. "Maybe we should focus on the present, and not on the past. After all, our duty lies within the castle walls, protecting our family and maintaining order among the clans."

Thunderwing took a deep breath, pushing away the emotions that threatened to consume him.

Stone Flame's eyes flashed with rage, his body tensing as if springs were about to snap. At the mention of the name of the Golden Scaffold, a red haze descended on him, obscuring all rational thoughts. The mere sound of her name on their tongues was an insult, a constant reminder of the betrayal that still gnawed at his heart.

Without warning, Stone Flame jumped to his feet, his massive body towering over his siblings. His claws extended, razor sharp and deadly as he charged at them with a low, menacing growl.

"Don't ever talk about her again!" he growled, his voice laced with venom. "She is nothing but a memory, a bitter taste that I spat out a long time ago!"

Thunderwing and Icemoon recoiled in shock, their eyes wide in fear as the fury of Stoneflame unfolded before them. They had seen glimpses of his fury in battle, but it had never been directed against them, his own family. Now his anger seemed to radiate a great heat, threatening to engulf them.

"Brother, please," Thunderwing tried to interject, but her words were not heard as Stoneflame's attention remained on her.

With a quick, powerful claw strike, he knocked the table to the ground. He towered over them, his chest heaving with rage and his eyes burning like embers from the depths of a fiery pit.

"Do you think you can dig into the past and expect peace from me?" Stone Flame roared, his voice echoing off the stone walls. "The gold placer is a stain on our history, a reminder of weakness and foolish trust. She abandoned us, betrayed everything we fought for, and you still cling to these sentimental thoughts!" Stone Flame's tail was beating wildly, whipping back and forth as he walked around the room, his excitement palpable. "I will not allow this topic to arise again. Do you both understand me?"

His piercing gaze bore into Thunderwing and Ice Moon, demanding submission. For a moment the air hung with tension, the only sound being the crackling of the fire and the distant howling of the storm outside.

Then, with a dismissive flick of his ear, Stoneflame turned on his heel and headed for the door, his movements fluid and purposeful.

Thunderwing's ears drooped, a guilty look on her face as she stared at Stoneflame's retreating back. She knew she shouldn't have mentioned the Golden Placer's name, but the memory lingered, a painful reminder of their turbulent past. Tucking her tail between her legs, she pushed away, her heart heavy with regret.

Ice Moon, sensing her distress, approached and gently nudged Thunderwing with his muzzle. "Don't worry, sister," he murmured in a soothing voice. "The Stone Flame Temper burns hot and fast, but always burns out just as quickly. It will cool down soon enough."

Thunderwing smiled weakly, her ears perking slightly at her brother's reassurance.
