Chapter 52: The Eve

The polls have finished, and the verdict is a rewrite.

Over the next few weeks, I'll release the remaining patreon-exclusive chapters here, then after the posting of chapter 56, the rewrites will start releasing publicly as a 'new' story on RR, SH, and Webnovel called "Re: The System's Harvester"

This novel will be labelled "(Old)" at that point, and the rewritten novel will see very regular uploads for quite a while.

Today, the first chapter of the rewrite was posted on Patreon for patrons to read, and to say the least, y'all should look forward to it.

  I promise it won't disappoint.

Early Morning - Early Fall : Moriai | Leyfa Askr

  -----

  - Eir Igna ~

Looking out over Spirit Lake from atop the central palace, watching the water glisten like the night sky, a scene replayed in the back of my mind almost endlessly.

Several weeks prior, standing exactly where I was standing then, I watched a column of light descend from the heavens, striking the water so intensely it showered the entire city with water for hours, and shook the Oak so hard that the carefully placed mana cores in its canopy rained down with the water.

It was an event I could never truly get out of my mind, replaying it over and over again in an attempt to answer why, to figure out what that dark figure the light struck was.

However, even after sending a team to investigate it.. the only thing we found was a single mana core absorbing a huge volume of mana while fleshy tissues grew around it like slime.

Whatever or whoever it was, if it was ever a creature to begin with, was no longer a part of this world.

But nonetheless, it made me question everything. Was it a sign from the gods I needed to interpret, or was it simply a result of the still-unknown beings that smashed two treants.. I would never know...

All I could do was continue with what I believed. "Haah..." -It doesn't help that there were rumors of the queen returning before that all went down...- Feeling a mix of anxiety and anger well in my chest, I clicked my tongue before lowering my gaze to the countless elves down below, working diligently to unload the countless tons of mana stones. -It'd be perfect if those beams of light were striking her, but something like that couldn't touch that freak...-

Thinking back to when she was young, I could vividly remember the days when she first awakened mana. In a matter of minutes, she had learned how to absorb and control it on her own, and within a month, she had already surpassed the level of scholars. It was a level of talent that was nothing short of sickening.

For some time, I was amazed by her.. almost enchanted, just as I was with her mother. As I changed her diaper, I wondered just how the child of the god-like being I chose to serve would grow.

However, as time passed, that mix of amazement, admiration, and curiosity faded and soured.

With every year she grew, she fell farther and farther beneath expectations, taking the unfathomable talent she was graced with and throwing it down the drain by playing in her room or exploring the city, treating the mana in the air like a toy to pass the time.

When hardship finally struck her with the passing of her father and her near-death experience during the disaster that descended on the capital, I thought she would get straightened up, after all, she finally began admiring strength, looking up to the lady-skinned monster named Evren with a look of yearning and admiration.

However, that was never the case. Taking an interest in martial arts, she tried learning from Evren, but it never bore fruit. Even after that monstrous woman left, she never managed to achieve anything, getting depressed by her supposed 'lack of talent' while calling mana and magic boring...

By the time she started growing up, I hated her with every fiber of my being, growing dull and emotionless in an attempt to hide it and not displease Her Majesty.

But no matter what I did to quell the flames, hatred roared in my chest.

And from there, the flames spread.

Before long, even my loyalty to Her Majesty wavered. Watching as she did nothing while her daughter's talent rotted away with time made me feel sick, as if watching someone pour gold into the ocean because they were bored.

And I wasn't the only one. After catching wind of my changes, a known terrorist organization called the 'Unifiers' reached out. I didn't know much of them at the time besides their desire for survival of the fittest, but they wanted me to kill Eve in order to straighten up the Queen.

However, I could never bring myself to do it. Whether from lingering hope that she could turn herself around, or from my previous admiration of the Queen, I simply couldn't bring myself to kill her, and with the raised security of the palace after the 'incident', neither could the Unifiers.

I never ceased my communication with them though. Over the years, I continued to give them intel from within the palace like a spy while going about my duties taking care of the woman I despised.

After a number of years though, something changed.

One day, after a discussion with her mother, Eve was declared to become a system mercenary, and while I was one of the maids closest with her, even I didn't know what the full story was. All I knew was that the decision was something the Queen had essentially forced on Eve.

For some time after the decision, I was overjoyed, she would be forced to actually use her talent, or she would get killed.

Either way, I'd never have to see her again.

  Or so I thought.

The day she was set to leave and start her journey, I was called to Her Majesty's abode, and while a bit anxious that my inner thoughts were found out, was instead touched upon the head, and presented a system panel of my own before the Queen finally spoke. 'You will travel with her. Don't let her die.'

In the blink of an eye, without even asking if it was alright, I was contracted to Eve within the system, turned into a slave-like companion who would have to obey nearly every order she made with only a few exceptions.

It was my worst nightmare.. and as a result, my lingering loyalty snapped and my hatred exploded.

Over the following years, even as Eve started dipping her toes into magic, I never felt anything, in order to keep myself from throwing myself off a cliff, I simply grew numb.

She was a spoiled brat nothing could save.

And while things slowly got better, and the figure of her mother started showing itself in her, it all went to shit again when she found this world called Earth and decided to settle down. -Little did I know then, this world would eventually be the place I regained my freedom.-

Feeling a hint of joy as I recounted the moment she was finally sucked up into a gate, and the connection between us was broken, just as an oracle I received said, a smile graced my face.

  But only for a moment.

"Miss Eir," Hearing a voice, I quickly wiped the smile off my face before turning around to see an older butler who had worked under me for a number of years here on Earth. "It seems like we will be ready for the ritual again in a few days. Would you like to reschedule it for then?"

Nodding, I turned back to the water. "We should do it as soon as the mana core placements have been verified." -We have no more time to waste...-

"I-I see. Then I will clarify that to those up above." Quick bowing, he turned around and made his way back into the estate without a word.

Finally opening my system window, I quickly navigated to quests before my smile returned. -At least it seems like after all my suffering, fate has chosen my side...- It was a quest I had received not too long ago, when Eve first left the palace to check on some rumors in the United States, with an oracle attached to it.

The quest professed that, if accepted, the Queen would get sucked into a gate, and I would be freed. As a condition, I would then have to use the power I received in her absence to perform a specific ritual that would connect Earth to my home world, ensuring Eve could never return, and granting free travel between the worlds. -What a truly gracious god...-

Since the day that quest was granted, I had only received a few other oracles, each telling me to not get distracted, and only getting more common after the latest setback.

But while things couldn't be rushed, we were finally on the clock. -Only a few days left...-

Staring at the swirling water near the horizon, my gaze turned calculated. -I can only hope we don't have any more setbacks...-

Early Afternoon - Early Fall : ??? | Unknown World

  - Shaw Alfson ~

  *Beep* "Quest Recieved."

Hearing my system ping, I wasted no time setting down my drink to look over at the quest panel. -A large-scale subjugation quest...- Looking up at my friends sitting around the table, also looking at their system windows, I grabbed their attention. "You guys get the same quest?"

Nodding, Chris, my closest friend took a sip of alcohol before glancing over at me. "On Earth, right?"

"Yeah, it seems like a pretty low rank world. Should be pretty easy." Pausing, I looked over at Johann. "You want to give it a shot? The rewards seem pretty good."

"Sure, I don't see why not." Pulling his legs off the table, he flicked a gold coin at the waitress before picking up the hulking sword laying against the back of his chair and snapping it to his back. "It'll be nice to have a change of scenery, you know?"

"Haha, right!" Chris quickly did the same. "We haven't stretched our legs in a while anyway!" Grabbing his daggers, he started clicking his gear back on. "I'm curious what this world will be like. You think it'll be a place we can get some new gear?"

"Probably. These kinds of quests usually come from kingdoms in trouble. If we're lucky we might be able to get into a royal treasury or two!"

"Haha! I'm already excited." Smiling wide, Chris walked up to the bar and cleared out tabs before we all walked outside and found a transport platform.

For the first time in a number of years, we were gonna get some blood on our blades, and we were excited for it.

However, nothing could have prepared us for what we were about to experience.

"Sh-Shaw! HELP-" *CRACKLE* Hearing Johann scream for help as his body was reduced to mush under the hoof of a massive, dozen-meter-tall goat-like monster, my stomach churned.

But no matter how badly I wanted to turn and help, there was nothing I could do. *CLANG* Barely managing to get my shield up in time, another huge goat slammed it's horns into me, sending me flying off my feet while barely managing to hold onto my lance. *CLANG-CRUNCHHH* As I finally landed, skidding back across the forest floor, I quickly covered my head and leaned into my shoulder only to take another impact. *WOOSH* "Chris are you good?!" Unable to see him anywhere, I yelled out somewhat hopelessly.

But after a moment, I heard his yell. "Shaw! Grab its attention!"

Looking over, I immediately spotted him getting lined up by the monster that killed Johann. -FUCK!- *CLANG* Slamming my shield in the ground, huge metal prongs immediately dug into it before I watched the other goat come charging in. -Looks like its finally time for this thing to shine!- Pulling back my lance, I braced myself.

*CLAAAANG* The sound of bending metal instantly rang out like a gong as the goat his my shield and a shockwave ripped through me.

But this time, I didn't go flying.

Knowing the monster would be in a daze from hitting an immovable object, I moved my massive lance around the shield before setting the tip of it against the monster's throat. -This thing better work!-

*CRRRACK* The moment I pressed the trigger, recoil ripped through my shoulder, and the meter-long, needle-sharp tip of my lance was shot out, boring a hole through the creature's neck and smashing apart its spine.

"YEK-" The monster sounded a loud squeel as the air in its throat was smashed through its voice box, but it wasn't alone either.

Turning to the monster facing Chris, I pulled my shield out of the ground, retracting the countless legs digging into the floor, expecting to need to take another blow.

But the next thing I knew, I saw Chris riding it like a bull, angrily digging his blades into the back of its head, trying to get beneath the skull plate before finally... *THUMP* The monster fell to the ground, and snapped the blades pinched under its skull.

"AGH! FUCK!" Letting out a furious yell, he pulled his broken daggers out of the creature's head with his upper half covered in blood before looking over his shoulder at the huge, bloody greatsword laying on the ground and wincing. "FUCK!" Throwing his bloody daggers aside, he turned away and dropped his head into his hands, wanting to rip out his hair and cry.

But we didn't have time to mourn.

Feeling the ground shaking as if from an earthquake, I looked further into the darkness of the forest with a look of fear. "CHRIS! WE NEED TO RUN!" Rushing over to him, I dropped my lance and threw my shield onto my back. "THOSE THINGS WEREN'T ALONE!" Grabbing his shoulder, I turned him around before slapping him across the face. *THWACK* "WAKE UP YOU SLOWPOKE!"

Finally snapping out of it he looked into the forest for a moment before going a little pale.

"NOW COME ON!" Dragging him along, we quickly started rushing away from what I could only assume was a stampede, slowly getting Chris back up to function while we simply ran.. and ran.. and ran...

It wasn't until we finally reached a large field with a towering, grey wall on the horizon.. that we finally slowed down. "W..what.. is that..." Speaking through labored breaths, I could only look at the horizon in confusion.

But even though I just spoke my mind, not wanting an answer, Chris responded through lethargy. "I really hope.. they're friendly..."
