Volume 1 Chapter 1

  1.Prologue

[TEAM] DespairMe (KNIGHT): Need backup[TEAM] DespairMe (KNIGHT): Guys, did y’all mute me? lol[TEAM] DespairMe (KNIGHT): Can you hear me?[TEAM] DespairMe (KNIGHT): No reply = you go bald[TEAM] HoamDongFist (GUNNER): n didn mute

“…It’s ‘didn’t,’ not ‘didn,’ you idiot.”

The ft-toned voice sounded less angry and more like the grumbling of an utterly exhausted man. Hajin’s eyes darted busily as he clicked his mouse, checking the mini-map on the right side of the screen.

Though the enemy team’s ranged DPS and support—the ones Hajin was holding off—were clearly visible, he had no clue where his teammates were or what they were doing. Hajin could only sigh weakly watching his HP bar dwindle under enemy fire.

“I set the whole table, and now the food’s gonna go cold, guys…”

His voice, already halfway resigned, carried a uniquely pitiful tone.

But in this so-called “group project” of a game, where five allies had to work together to defeat five enemies, the suffering was far from over.

Hajin, the tank, was the one taking hits upfront, yet their DPS was the one who died.

[TEAM] HoamDongFist (GUNNER): bruh how tf did i die??[TEAM] QuitGameWriteThesis (DARK MAGE): ??? how u die[TEAM] HoamDongFist (GUNNER): Tank asked for help[TEAM] HoamDongFist (GUNNER): Went to backup but got caught by their ninja lol;[TEAM] QuitGameWriteThesis (DARK MAGE): LMAO GUNNER GOT 1V1’D BY A NINJA?[TEAM] QuitGameWriteThesis (DARK MAGE): This aint 5v5 its 4v6 huh?

Gunner was a top-tier melee DPS in Battle Hero, dominant in 1v1s due to its attack speed and evasion skills. At its peak, picking Gunner was considered an auto-win, yet this guy managed to die with it. And to a Ninja, no less, a css so notoriously bad that picking it in ranked was borderline trolling.

[TEAM] HoamDongFist (GUNNER): NINJA’S ATK SPD IS FASTER THAN GUNNER??[TEAM] QuitGameWriteThesis (DARK MAGE): U saying Ninja > Gunner now?? lol[TEAM] QuitGameWriteThesis (DARK MAGE): Just admit u suck lol[TEAM] HoamDongFist (GUNNER): My DPS > yours[TEAM] QuitGameWriteThesis (DARK MAGE): yeah 2 kills 9 deaths lol[TEAM] QuitGameWriteThesis (DARK MAGE): U feed 9 deaths then talk sht about DPS? If I inted 9 times my dmg would be 4x yours lol[TEAM] QuitGameWriteThesis (DARK MAGE): If u cant carry as gunner just uninstall[TEAM] HoamDongFist (GUNNER): STFU** trash[TEAM] HoamDongFist (GUNNER): Useless ranged DPS **ss[TEAM] HoamDongFist (GUNNER): im afk bye

No backup came. And after all that, the DPS were too busy fming each other.

  [TEAM] DespairMe (KNIGHT): Please backup

“You crazy bastards, stop bickering with each other and just focus damage here. Why are they fighting teammates in a TEAM game?”

His teammates might as well not have existed; they only served to fuel his frustration. While they bickered amongst themselves, Hajin’s Knight tanked alone until it eventually met its demise.

During the respawn timer, Hajin sighed and tapped his keyboard.

[TEAM] DespairMe (KNIGHT): What’s the point of fighting each other?[TEAM] HoamDongFist (GUNNER): Our healer’s a f***ing noob so I’m throwing

The Gunner clearly couldn’t handle criticism. One comment about his poor py had already shattered his fragile ego. Now he was decring he wouldn’t contribute at all. The sheer childishness was astounding, but even Hajin couldn’t bring himself to retort, “Go ahead, throw. You’re useless anyway.”

Instead, he channeled the patience of a parenting clinic director and chose his words carefully.

[TEAM] DespairMe (KNIGHT): Gunner bro… don’t give up yet[TEAM] DespairMe (KNIGHT): Just focus on their ranged DPS. I’ll handle vision for you[TEAM] DespairMe (KNIGHT): I’m not asking for much lol[TEAM] DespairMe (KNIGHT): Gunner = DPS, okay?[TEAM] DespairMe (KNIGHT): Just nd your shots

A tank was essentially a babysitter. Wiping the noses of DPS pyers who couldn’t deal damage while propping up egos more fragile than a sprouting seedling—all via motivational chat—was part of the job. It made no sense. The tank was the one getting pummeled all game, yet the DPS pyers were the ones with mental states softer than tofu.

But getting beaten down nonstop would frustrate anyone.

Hajin always channeled his rage into attacking the enemy DPS. Yet as a tank—high defense, low offense—his damage was pitiful without backup. No matter how much he pummeled the frontline, he couldn’t secure a kill alone.

Hajin prioritized defense upgrades (chest, belt, pants) before even touching offense, maximizing his main tank role. As a result, his character hit like a wet noodle. Even the squishiest DPS required relentless beating before finally dropping.

But before his feeble attacks could whittle them down, the enemy team would focus-fire him into oblivion. Such was the fate of an unsupported tank. A truly despair-inducing role.

  “Haa…”

Being a tank was like leading the worst group project imaginable.

Except Hajin never signed up for it.

But what choice did he have? The world was full of clueless tanks who dove blindly, unaware of vision control, positioning, or respawn timers. These were the same pyers who’d whine, “I’m tanking for this trash team!” before single-handedly dragging everyone into hell. They weren’t tanks. They were suicide squads.

So Hajin reluctantly became the tank. Tragically, it sort of suited him. There was a strange satisfaction in controlling the game’s flow, and victories tasted sweeter after the struggle. The higher the tier, the better his win rate climbed.

  …Yeah. The higher the tier.

As he waited to respawn, Hajin gred at his teammates’ characters.

Even as they fumbled the teamfight, and hurtled toward a crushing defeat, his teammates kept fighting each other. They say a common enemy unites allies, but watching this game made him doubt that old adage. Whether the enemy team won or lost didn’t matter. His team’s unwavering commitment to infighting was almost admirable in its stubbornness. Bamboo itself would bow before such sheer resolve.

[TEAM] QuitGameWriteThesis (DARK MAGE): Only counts as throwing if the carry does it[TEAM] QuitGameWriteThesis (DARK MAGE): Gunner, you flopping ain’t even real throwing lol[TEAM] QuitGameWriteThesis (DARK MAGE): No difference, right? lololol[TEAM] HoamDongFist (GUNNER): Ah, you f*ing—**

“You idiots. Fight after the game. Please…”

While his team was busy tearing each other apart, the enemy destroyed a Crystal Tower. Taking down towers granted team-wide buffs, making them critical objectives, and his team had just handed one over without even putting up a fight.

A notification bred: the enemy’s attack power and crit rate had increased. With three of five towers already gone and two of his five teammates still brawling in chat, this match was as good as lost.

But Hajin wasn’t about to just give up. Once respawns finished, he pinged near one of the two remaining towers, signaling the team to regroup. If nothing else, they could ambush the enemy and maybe snipe the st hit on the tower.

Battle Hero was a MOBA game.

Five versus five, strategic cshes, and the first team to destroy the enemy’s base won. That was the core of it. But the real thrill y in the constant potential for comebacks, letting your guard down meant throwing away victory.

And right now, giving up felt like a waste. Hajin studied the mini-map, tracking the enemy’s movements.

“One good wipe could turn this.”

[TEAM] DespairMe (KNIGHT): Listen up[TEAM] DespairMe (KNIGHT): They’re positioning like they’re gonna push our tower

He pinged the area near the Crystal Tower.

[TEAM] DespairMe (KNIGHT): Wait for them to burn cooldowns. I’ll bait, then[TEAM] DespairMe (KNIGHT): Ult ASAP[TEAM] TalkEqualsThrow (BISHOP): k[TEAM] QuitGameWriteThesis (DARK MAGE): Ult ready[TEAM] Jjororo (ARCHMAGE): go

A straight fight between a team with three buffs and a team with none was hopeless. So Hajin abandoned the idea of a fair csh. Instead, he’d let the enemy waste skills on the Crystal Tower, then strike te to steal the st hit.

Losing four or more Crystal Towers reduced their chances of winning to virtually zero, making this teamfight their st stand. The rest of the team seemed to realize this too. Unlike earlier, they were now following Hajin’s lead without protest.

Whether out of sheer spite or genuine apathy, the Gunner ignored Hajin’s pings and charged straight into the enemy base, only to get instantly killed by the enemy ranged DPS’s combo.

[TEAM] TalkEqualsThrow (BISHOP): f*cking troll gunner throwing the game[TEAM] HoamDongFist (GUNNER): lol[TEAM] HoamDongFist (GUNNER): u said it didn’t matter tho?? lol[TEAM] HoamDongFist (GUNNER): gl without me

With the Gunner dead, the enemy now had the numbers advantage. Their tank, recognizing the opening, activated his invincibility skill and dove straight into Hajin’s team, locking down their Dark Mage.

The fight was already a lost cause, but Hajin couldn’t just stand there. He rushed in, tying up both enemy ranged DPS in a desperate attempt to turn the tide. He gritted his teeth and unleashed everything he had, but against high-level DPS pyers who had already maxed their weapons and armor, a tank’s damage might as well have been a mosquito bite. It was the same lonely, futile struggle as always.

Only those who’ve pyed the game know just how pitiful it feels for a tank to be the st one standing after a lost teamfight.

Hajin could only watch helplessly as all five enemies surrounded his character.

The enemy ranged DPS began melting his health bar with ease. Even as a Knight—the sturdiest Tank css—he stood no chance against two ranged DPS and one melee DPS focusing him. The enemy Tank’s occasional basic attacks, like casually tossing medicine between blows, were salt in the wound.

Py enough politically toxic games, and you develop a sixth sense for reading people’s true thoughts.

[TEAM] HoamDongFist (GUNSLINGER): LMAO these ******[TEAM] HoamDongFist (GUNSLINGER): talked all that **** but lose without me? lol

This meant that: since I’m stuck in the respawn screen, the only thing left for me to do was tap my keyboard and argue in chat.

[TEAM] QuitGameWriteThesis (DARKMAGE): How tf do u lose a 4v5[TEAM] QuitGameWriteThesis (DARKMAGE): With a braindead troll like u, no wonder we lost

And this, in turn, meant: Now that I’m dead too, all I can do is cp back, and this entire mess is 100% your fault.

Honestly, to Hajin, both were equally terrible. The Gunner’s decision-making and combat sense might as well have been zero, but the Dark Mage couldn’t even calcute his own skill range. And why the hell were they fming each other in a team game to begin with?

Hajin stared bnkly as their base crystal shattered in an onsught.

“This was my promo match, you crazy bastards…”

  ‘LOSE!’‘DEFEAT.’

A tank main’s life. Maybe quitting the game was the answer.

This was already his fifth failed promotion.
