Aftermath Dinners and New Days

“Will you give me a hint? Anything about your parents?” Hermione asks as the two Gryffindors and Slytherin near the Great Hall.

“I could, but the fact that neither of them are human won't help you figure out what makes me only partly human. I'm sort of adopted after all,” Ana says.

“Wait, then what about on the train? When you told Ron off for assuming two women couldn't have a child,” Gsses asks.

“I never actually lied, I was just telling him off for assuming that there had to be a man involved,” Ana expins.

“What is ‘sort of adopted’ supposed to mean?” Hermione asks.

“It's complicated. You ponder the information you have, I'm going to sit with the Slytherins for dinner. Going to see who is still willing to talk to me and who is too scared,” Ana says.

“Alright, I won't push on the adopted thing. If the Slytherins get to be too much, feel free to sit with us. After humiliating Malfoy like that you're bound to have made a few friends in Gryffindor,” Hermione says before her and Gsses walk to their table.

Spotting Daphne, Ana walks over to sit next to her. Many of the other Slytherins take gnces and whisper amongst themselves. "Good evening Daphne,” Ana says as she sits down next to the girl.

“Good evening Ana. You gave us quite the show earlier. I hope you are prepared for when Malfoy retaliates,” Daphne says.

“I'm sure I'll be able to handle it. It won't come for a while. If my understanding of him is correct he will try to use his father's influence again, that is unlikely to happen any time soon once his father finds out he accepted and then lost a duel to a non-pureblood,” Ana says.

“His Father might try to get you expelled in response for your ‘btant disrespect of our traditions’ as my great grandfather would have put it,” Daphne says.

“I doubt it. I may have had no grounds for the challenge, but Malfoy accepted. And on top of that I'm fairly sure the headmaster holds sole power for expulsion unless an actual crime occurs. I'm quite certain Professor Dumbledore won't be throwing me out any time soon,” Ana says.

“Do you have some kind of bckmail on him?” Daphne asks.

“Nope, he's too terrified of my parents, or at least the one he knows about, to try anything like that,” Ana says.

“They must be pretty powerful to scare him. He's known as one of the most powerful wixen of this age,” Daphne says.

“They are quite powerful as I understand it. They avoided giving me any idea of how powerful until about two years ago. They didn't want me ending up like Malfoy,” Ana says.

“And how powerful is that?” Daphne asks.

“That's a secret they asked me to keep,” Ana says with a grin.

A little while ter Bise comes walking up behind Ana with an angry look on his face and says, “So you're not even one of us?”

“There are several ways I could take that, a wix? Yes. Someone with a powerful family? Yes. Prejudice? I try not to be,” Ana says calmly.

“I mean pureblood. Someone actually worthy of having magic,” Bise says angrily.

“That's an interesting way to put it. What makes a person so worthy of having magic? We weren't the first to learn to use it nor even the best at controlling it. What measure of ‘worth’ are you using here, Zabini?” Ana says her anger stirring.

“The measure of muggle to wizard. Only true witches and wizards are worthy of using magic. Muggleborns don't even bother with our traditions. Just look at what Dumbledore has done to accommodate them, we don't even celebrate the proper holidays,” Bise responds angrily.

“I celebrate the old holidays. My parents weren't ones to worship the old gods, but we do at least honor them in our home. Besides that, you've missed something. I never said I was muggleborn, I said I wasn't a pureblood. I'm fully magical, just not completely human” Lillian says with a dangerous look in her eyes.

  “I…What?” Bise says, suddenly confused.

“You heard me. I'm not fully human, that means I can't be pureblood even though both my parents are magical,” Lillian says aggressively.

  “Oh, I thought…” Bise starts.

“Thought what? That I was just ‘another mudblood’ who tricked everyone into thinking otherwise. No I'm worse Bise. In the eyes of you prejudicial idiots I probably look like an animal. So how about you go and take your assumptions and don't bother me again unless it's to apologize for being such an idiot,” Lillian says with increasing volume. Her magic slipping out and causing a few dishes to start to hover.

“Miss Grim! Control yourself or I will be forced to remove you from the hall!” Professor McGonagall says having walked over to the commotion.

Taking a few breaths rein in her magic and disentangle herself from her anger Ana says, “Apologies professor. I'm growing a little tired of prejudicial bigots. I'll make sure to watch my temper in the future.”

“For the safety of the other students, I hope you do. Now what is this about prejudice and bigotry?” Professor McGonagall asks.

“Nothing that has broken school rules as of yet professor,“ Ana says looking Professor McGonagall in the eyes.

After a moment Professor McGonagall says, “I suppose if you don't wish to eborate there is nothing I can do.”

As Professor McGonagall walks away Ana turns to Daphne and says, “I'm going to turn in for the night. I hope the rest of your night goes well.”

“Yours as well. See you tomorrow Ana,” Daphne says before Ana turns and walks back to the Slytherin dorms.

The next morning Ana takes a shower and greets a groggy Daphne once more before putting on her uniform. She chooses to add the sweater today

Leaving the common room Ana heads to the Great Hall to grab breakfast. She sees Hermione already there and decides to join her for a few minutes.

“Good morning Hermione,” Ana says as she sits down.

“Good morning Ana. I gather st night with the Slytherins didn't go so well?” Hermiine says.

“You could say that. Bise pissed me off and I lost control of my magic,” Ana says.

“So that's what that was. It seemed like bursts of magic had covered the area where I saw you sit down,” Hermione says.

“Already getting used to your magic sense. I'm impressed. Ready to start your csses?” Ana says.

“Better than ready, I'm excited. I love learning,” Hermione says.

“What do you have first? I've got Transfiguration and Charms,” Ana says.

“I've got the reverse, Charms and then Transfiguration,” Hermione says.

“I see. That probably works best. Get the upper years out of the way for it. What do you have in the afternoon? I've got Potions and Arithmancy,” Ana says.

“I've got potions as well and then… one of my electives,” Hermione says hesitatingly.

  “Which elective?” Ana asks curiously.

“One of them, I'm taking all the electives so I have a choice of which csses to show up for,” Hermione expins quickly.

“That seems like it'll be difficult to manage. How are you gonna stop from being overwhelmed?” Ana says.

“I have a pn. Plus, Professor McGonagall says I can drop as many of them as I need as long as I pass two of the electives,” Hermione says.

“If you've got a pn I guess I'll leave you to that, “ Ana says.

Walking up to the pair with Gsses in tow Ron says, “G’morning you two. What are you talking about?”

  “Csses,” Ana says.

“Is it ever anything else with you two?” Ron says grabbing some food.

“We were just discussing what electives we're taking,” Hermione says.

“Well, I'm taking Care of Magical Creatures and Divination. I figured they'd be easy O's,” Ron says.

“Is that all you think about for csses? Getting easy grades?” Hermione says.

“What? What'd you take then?” Ron asks.

“All of the electives,” Hermione states.

“All of them? How are you even going to get to them. Some of them even overp. You can't show up to every css,” Ron says, astounded.

“McGonagall approved my schedule and I have a pn for getting to my csses,” Hermione responds.

“Only you could get approval for taking every css that Hogwarts offers,” Ron says.

“What about you, Harry?” Hermione asks.

“Hmm, oh, I'm taking Care of Magical Creatures and Runes,” Gsses says.

“What! I thought we were gonna take the same csses? We talked about It before our meetings with McGonagall,” Ron says, surprised.

“I, um, I changed my mind st minute. I'm sorry, I forgot to tell you,” Gsses says, not meeting Ron's eyes.

“Well, at least we're still taking Care of Magical Creatures together,” Ron says before going back to his food.

“What, ah, What about you Ana?” Gsses says.

“Care of Magical Creatures, Runes and Arithmancy. Seems we'll all be seeing a bit more of each other. Maybe we can form a study group, since we're taking the same csses” Ana says.

“A study group? Do you ever do anything for fun?” Ron asks.

“I find it fun learning about how magic works. Each spell is like a puzzle, figure the puzzle out and you get better at casting it,” Ana says.

“You do? I just thought you get better at casting a spell with practice,” Ron says through a mouthful of breakfast.

“If you learned the Disarming Charm the same way I did, the basic description just says the spell ‘forces whatever the target is holding out of their hands', but after a bit of practice I realized if I visualized the effect properly the spell uses less magic to cast,” Ana expins.

  “I…wah…huh?” Ron says, looking confused.

“If you imagine what a spell does with more detail it becomes easier to cast. Which does come naturally with practice,” Hermione expins.

“Oh, but if it comes with practice how does knowing that help?” Ron asks.

“Because you can use it to slightly alter a spell. For instance you can determine what direction an object gets pulled for the Disarming Charm,” Ana answers.

“Oh, that would be useful,” Ron says.

“Quite, but isn't altering spells supposed to be a 5th year or above topic?” Hermione asks.

“I don't know, but that probably goes into greater detail, the only alterations this method allows is for things not predetermined by the spell you cast. You can't alter the flight path or even the speed of the spell. Those are probably topics covered in the upper year csses,” Ana says.

“I might take a look when I get a chance. It sounds like an interesting topic. Anyways it's almost time for css. Are you all ready to head out?” Hermione says.

  “Yep,” Ana says.

  “Sure,” Gsses and Ron say.

The four students head off to their csses. The trio of Gryffindors split off when they passed the Charms cssroom.

“See you ter,” Ana says before continuing to her Transfiguration css.
