Z14-Planetary Sprint

The battered SS Obselete sat in the relative calm of the storm’s aftermath, a testament to Sparks’s questionable engineering and Veeva’s exceptional piloting. Grizzle, ever the optimist, whistled a jaunty tune as he patched up a particularly nasty gash in the hull. Blip and Blop, having survived their second near-death experience in as many hours, were currently engaged in a spirited tug-of-war with a stray bolt.

"Right then," Zero announced, rubbing his temples. "Final leg. Across the Xylos system. High-speed dash. Sounds… fun." His voice lacked its usual pep. Even his trademark optimism seemed to have taken a battering from the hyperstorm.

Luna, perched at her console, tapped away furiously. "Preliminary scans show Krixis and Vortag are neck and neck. Miran’s trailing behind, but Garnak and Draxar have fallen significantly behind after the storm. Zeno's… well, Zeno's being Zeno."

  "What about Veeva?" Grizzle asked.

"Veeva is strategizing," Luna replied, her eyes fixed on the screen. "She's been meticulously studying the Xylos system’s asteroid fields. She believes she can use them to gain an advantage."

Sparks, meanwhile, was busy replacing the toaster-based power conduit with something… less precarious. "This time, I used a repurposed space-eel intestine and a hamster wheel," he announced proudly, holding up a contraption that looked suspiciously like a giant, metal slinky. "It's more reliable… probably."

Zero eyed the contraption with a mixture of apprehension and awe. "Just… don’t let it get loose," he muttered.

"What are Krixis and Vortag up to?" Zero asked Luna.

Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.

"Krixis is going for brute force," Luna said. "He's got that ridiculously powerful engine, he’ll try to muscle through the asteroid fields."

  "And Vortag?"

"Vortag… well, Vortag is Vortag," Luna said, a hint of unease in her voice. "He’s unpredictable. Always has a trick up his sleeve. I'm picking up some unusual energy signatures near his ship. Something about… cloaking technology?"

"Cloaking technology?" Zero’s eyebrows shot up. This was getting interesting.

"This is going to be insane," Grizzle grinned, his usual apprehension overshadowed by the thrill of the challenge. "Buckle up, team!"

The starting signal blared across the comms. A cacophony of engines roared to life as ships launched into the Xylos system. Krixis’s ship shot forward like a bullet, a trail of incandescent exhaust blazing behind it. Vortag’s ship, however, was nowhere to be seen – cleverly hidden amongst the asteroids using some newly found cloaking device.

Veeva skillfully navigated the SS Obselete through the asteroid field, using the smaller rocks as shields and the larger ones as launch ramps to slingshot them forward. It was a dangerous maneuver, but Veeva’s expertise was evident as she expertly avoided collisions.

"Miran's trying to follow Veeva's strategy," Luna pointed out, "but he's not as skilled." Indeed, Miran's ship was bouncing wildly, narrowly avoiding a few near-misses.

Suddenly, a section of the asteroid field shifted, sending a huge wave of space rocks hurtling towards the SS Obselete. Zero yelled out, grabbing the controls, adrenaline pumping through him. "Veeva, evasive maneuvers!"

Veeva reacted instantly, expertly guiding the ship through a narrow gap between two colossal asteroids, narrowly avoiding a collision. Their ship rattled and shook but, miraculously, they survived the near-miss.

"Sparks, anything?" Zero shouted above the roar of the engines.

"Holding strong!" Sparks yelled back. "Though the slinky… thing… is making some unusual noises."

The race was proving to be increasingly tense. Krixis, despite his aggressive strategy, was starting to fall behind, his ship taking damage from asteroid impacts. The cloaked Vortag remained a mystery, his presence only betrayed by occasional bursts of energy.

As they approached the final checkpoint, a massive, glittering space station, the tension was palpable. The race had become a test of skill, strategy, and luck. The finish line was in sight, but the journey to get there promised to be anything but straightforward. Zero looked at his crew – Grizzle’s grin, Veeva’s focused eyes, Sparks’s mad gleam of determination, and even Blip and Blop’s excited squeaks. They had faced the storm together; they would face this, together. The thrill of competition and the need for survival were an intoxicating mix. The final leg was far from over, but one thing was certain: they were going to give it their all. The finish line beckoned.
