Prologue
“And it is done!”
I hit the enter key on my keyboard as I finished up the last line of code for the module that I was occupied with at my workstation. I gave a quick glance towards my laptop that was sitting next to the monitor on my desk reviewing the simulation I ran of the code with a pleased smile on my face as the mockup showed no bugs occurring in the run process.
Lifting my arms above my head and interlacing my fingers together I stretched them out as I basked in the feeling that came with knowing I was done with my work for the day. Seeing my movements, one of my co-workers came over and peeked their head over the divider of my cubicle.

“Adam… got all your work done for the product we will be presenting at the end of the week?” Terry said while placing his right arm on the top of the divider while looking at my workstation.
Swiveling my office chair around to face him, I gave Terry a pleased grin and said, “Yup,” putting extra emphasis on the u and p as I answered his question.
“Excellent. That will be one less thing to worry about going forward with the project. You going to head home now?” Terry asked with a tone that hinted at no ulterior motives as to his question.
I quickly answered back in a sarcastic tone, “Nope. I got a hot date waiting for me at the restaurant down the street.”
Terry just smirked with a small laugh and replied, “Good for you… just make sure you show up for the rehearsal meeting tomorrow afternoon so we can hammer out all the details of what you and everyone else have completed for the client.” As I pushed my office chair back and started to shut down my electronics I looked at Terry and said, “Wouldn’t miss it.”
As I watched Terry stroll back to his desk, out of the corner of my eye I saw my electronics had finished shutting down. I then closed my laptop, retrieved my leather messenger bag from under my desk, and carefully stowed the laptop inside before slinging it over my shoulders so I could begin my walk home for the evening.
As I strolled towards the elevators of the building, I walked by a floor to ceiling mirror and just stopped to fuss with my hair while taking in my appearance.
My shaggy brown hair was the right amount of messy to say casual, but also professional. A look that complemented my square frame glasses, with only three sides holding the lenses in place, and the black and white plaid long sleeve shirt with sleeves rolled up to my elbows.
To finish the outfit, a pair of blue jeans that went down to my black and red sneakers made the look complete. This style suited the me who was twenty-five years old and working at the start-up here in San Francisco.
As I exited the building, I started to make my way towards the ferry terminal to catch one of the last ferry’s that would take me to where I was currently residing in the Bay Area. The start-up I worked for paid well enough, but was not sufficient towards affording an apartment in the city.
That was fine by me, because it allowed me to use the money that I saved to indulge in my hobbies. That of reading fantasy books and graphic novels, playing online MMORPGs, and watching the latest anime being released by Japan. I was currently engrossed in book series I discovered online called, American Nekomata by Brian Varn and was excitedly looking forward to getting home to continue from where I left off last evening.
The night air had a slight chill to it, but luckily it was summertime, and the true cold weather was months away. As I walked down the Embarcadero, I could hear the distant cries of police sirens growing closer and closer. A small reminder that this was San Francisco and not everything was as idealistic as some might think.
As the siren noise got louder, I saw a black Honda go flying by at incredible speeds and soon after numerous police cruisers pursuing it. As I watched the scene unfold, I just thought that it must be some department store thieves or a car jacker that got a little more than they bargained for.
I just shrugged my shoulders and continued walking secure in the knowledge that this incident had nothing to do with me.
However, suddenly, I heard the screech of tires as I noticed the black Honda make a sudden U-turn in a hasty attempt to shake off its pursuers. The car made the turn, but unexpectantly began fishtailing and the driver must have gunned the engine because the vehicle suddenly sped up.
My best guess was that the driver had revved the engine to try and compensate for their abrupt loss of control. However, the car then rammed into the center divider of the street causing it to go wildly out of control and careen right towards me on the sidewalk.
As the car barreled towards me my body did not even have time to register the impact the car made before I was slammed into the front of the car and everything around me immediately went black.
