Chapter 01 - Defect

  Chapter 01 - Defect

‘What is going on? What is this?’

For some reason, I found myself in a dark place with that weird message popping in my head as if it was trying to engrave itself in my mind. I tried to look around, but I couldn't. I could only see darkness and that message that seemed like an alert from a cell phone over and over in front of me.

‘This is a new level of a weird dream, even for me… I should try that detox thing.’

I forgot what it was called. In any case, I had weird dreams before that felt very long, but they all came to an end eventually. I just had to be patient.

At some point, I got bored of waiting and then decided to count how many times I had seen that message. I was pretty sure that I shouldn't be that mindful of anything while I was dreaming. Still, I did that to keep things out of my head and keep myself busy. However, I soon realized that I was in a bind when I reached the 86400 mark.

‘Did something happen to me while I was unaware? A stroke, perhaps?’

I couldn't tell if I was in a hospital or if I had passed out in my room, but it felt like something had happened to me. I was also pretty sure that people don't usually dream when they fall unconscious in situations like this. This was worrisome…

Time passed, and I lost count of how many times I counted up to 86400. At this point in time, I couldn’t help but think that someone was trying to brainwash me with the hero stuff. It has been ages since I played that type of game or read any books with that kind of theme. So, I couldn’t understand how come I was having this kind of dream.

At some point, I decided to think of possible explanations as to why this was happening, but only after some weird things began to appear aside from the brainwashing message. That never left me, but something else appeared in my field of vision and now and then, new pieces of information would appear alongside it.

‘It couldn’t be, could it? Why is this happening?’

It was easier to accept that I had lost my mind or something, but even that would be hard to explain. I lived a pretty regular life until now, after all. I didn’t have any major setbacks, and I was relatively healthy. Still, it seems that things like that tend to happen for no apparent reason. Regardless, I kept counting to 86400, and I also memorized how many times I did that… around the 250th, I finally noticed some more changes and something pushing me and then I was fully reincarnated.

The dazzling light blinded me for a few moments and then I felt like the blood was rushing to my head. I wasn’t angry. The blood was truly rushing to my head because I was upside down. It was weird that I only noticed that because of that. Before long, I felt a light tap on my back and stomach. Maybe this was what people did in this world to confirm that the kids were alive and well after being born.

  “Wah…”

A hoarse sound came out of my mouth. I couldn’t pretend to cry, so this was the best that I could do. My body was all covered in fluids, so it was kind of slimy. Still, soon I was put in a large bowl and then I was cleaned up.

  “Varka tilun mesh’kai?”

  “Tilun. Eska varel doman.”

  “Doman? Kareth su ven?”

  “Ven, kareth. Doman shira kul’den.”

  “Kira thalen, veshto lun?”

  “Veshto lun... sharen vek.”

‘As expected, I can’t understand the language… I can’t say that I know every single idiom on Earth, but it doesn’t feel like it is from there.’

Was I too hasty? expecting to be reincarnated on Earth with my memories without even knowing how I died? That was indeed weird, so I expected that I was somewhere else, very far away.

Little by little, the light began to dissipate and then it gave room to a blurry scene. My sight began to adjust to the surroundings. The first thing I saw as I was put on a cradle was a ceiling made of wood and then the light of some candles in the corner of the room. It seemed about right. It was a common occurrence to be reborn in a medieval place. The system was there too, so everything felt right. Deep down, I still felt that my brain could have been trying to trick me somehow, but I decided not to question my sanity just yet. I wanted to give my willpower some credit.

While I was thinking about that, I felt something passing through my whole body. It was a warm and comfortable feeling… Soon enough, I felt a blue light around my face, but soon vanished and then I felt some hands touching my legs and arms.

‘Magic too, huh? Well, it makes sense, since there is a system in this world. That should have been the cue that this wasn’t truly Earth.’

  “Serath no’kai vel dronin?”

  “No’kai. Dronin tal’es venak.”

  “Venak dral? Nai’los juren fel?”

“Fel. Juren sa valen, mor’tek ishar.”

  “Mor’tek... esh’lin kira?”

  “Esh’lin. Kira dor’mal serun.”

The lack of understanding of the language was starting to bother me, but soon those thoughts vanished from my mind when I heard some sniffing and sobbing. I didn’t have full control over my new body yet, so I couldn’t frown, but this was the first reaction that I thought of having. I couldn’t move my head that well, so I couldn’t see who touched me or who was crying. Still, that sound remained for a while, until things went silent and I heard the sound of a door closing.

‘Well, this is weird… usually, a mother would feel happy to give birth to a child, right? They also would look forward to hugging them for the first time and giving them food, right? I probably shouldn’t think too much about it… I definitely am not looking forward to all the troubles of being a baby again.’

During the whole time, I would be conscious. The first few years would be pretty long as well. Still, there was no point in worrying about that. I should just be patient and look forward to my adventure. The system had been completed as well, so soon enough, I would have the chance to become super strong in another world… I might write a biography about it and name it: That Time I became super strong in another world.

The parameters were a bit weird, but that only made things feel a lot more interesting. I tried to search for other functions of the system, but I was unable to find them. At the same time, I began to feel pretty sleepy, and soon enough, I was sleeping.

When I woke up the next day, I was feeling pretty hungry. It seemed that my new mother was still sleeping and forgot to feed me for whatever reason. I couldn’t sense the smell of blood, so the birth probably wasn’t that difficult, but who knows? Maybe I had been in a massive pain in the ass before leaving the womb. It felt that it had been pretty easy from my perspective, though.

Still, after a while, I noticed that the room was too silent. The candles were no longer lit, but it was still bright enough for me to see the surroundings. A new day had arrived, and I was alone.

‘This isn’t a good sign, is it?’

My name was pretty strong, but I was still a baby. I couldn’t fend for myself or look after myself, even if I had the memories of my previous life. Heck, I couldn’t even chew food since I didn’t have teeth. I couldn’t help but wonder if my behavior creeped everyone out and now I was being treated as a cursed baby or something.

Several hours passed and the hunger only got worse, but then I started to feel thirsty too. It was only a matter of time before that started to affect me, and with my current condition, it would weaken me faster than anyone could say Hasta luego. Fortunately, I heard the sound of a door opening and then closing, followed by some steps that approached me. Eventually, a little girl appeared and then stared at me with a blank expression. She didn’t seem older than ten, but she had long bright red hair that covered the right side of her face and emerald green eyes. The weird thing about her was the fact that she was wearing an old version of a maid’s clothes.

‘I guess it couldn’t be a proper medieval world without some form of oppressive system where some people take advantage or control others. Here, it is just more obvious.’

The redhead girl tilted her head while looking me straight in the eye. While she was confused, she soon noticed that I had a bit of fever and then decided to do what she had come to do, give me food. Using some sort of tube, and a cup that she filled with milk from a bottle nearby, she made me drink it… it wasn’t half bad, pretty sweet and warm, too. While it was unexpected that my mother wouldn’t feed me, I decided not to mind that kind of stuff. It seemed that my family was well-off, and maybe tradition here was different. More often than not, rich people are very weird.

Milk seemed good enough for my current body, so eventually I burped, filling full and reinvigorated. Maybe it was because I was no longer with a little water in my body, or maybe it was because it was the milk of some magic monster. After that, the girl left and then the silence returned.

‘Well, I didn’t find my new father either and my mother is keeping her distance. Maybe I am really ugly or deformed. According to the parameters, strength and vitality should increase my health by ten points each, while calculation and an effect increase my psions by ten as well. Dexterity and accuracy should increase stamina by the same amount. However, the effect was halved for some reason… that must be why my mother is avoiding me.’

It took a few weeks to confirm that my body wasn’t deformed and I could move all the parts of my body and even feel them, but I couldn’t move my legs.
