Chapter 2 - Feels Good to Earn Your Keep

Jordan wiped the sweat off his brow. It wasn’t easy to fill two wagons, but he did it, and some extra as well. Jordan did the math while looking at his experience points; he could earn 3000-5000 experience from mining all day, meaning that in addition to his one silver for a hard day's work, he could also earn 3-5 gold through the Transmigrator System.

The mining foreman approached him. “Here you go, 1 silver. Keep up the good work.” He says before turning away to find the other workers.

Jordan smiles and gladly keeps the silver. There’s nothing like a hard day’s work. Knowing that you earned your keep is better than hours of reciting Buddhist scriptures. He thinks, satisfied with his effort.

After doing his part for the world, Jordan began to walk back. He had to thank the blacksmith for his recommendation and maybe find a reasonably priced room t9 rent. He was now a responsible working man, and thus, he should have his own place to stay.

  …

  …

Jordan bows his body in a ninety degree angle. “Thanks for all your help, Mr. Blacksmith. Saving a life is better than building a seven-story pagoda. I’ll never forget this favour.” He says sincerely.

The blacksmith lets out a chuckle and shakes his head before grabbing Jordan to set him back to an upright position. “What favour, all I did was give you some moldy bread and beef jerky. As for the job recommendation, no need to thank me. Who knows, after working there for a month, you may even curse me! Hah, hah!” The blacksmith says with a laugh. “And you call me Gregory. No need to remember any favors; I was just doing what I should.” He says, not thinking much of it.

Jordan lets out a smile. It’s a blessing to deal with honest people, He thinks, praising Gregory in his heart.

“I should be off. I’d like to go the town hall before they close for the day. Thanks for all your help.” Jordan says before turning to walk to the town hall.

“No worries, no worries.” Gregory says with a chuckle.

  …

  …

“I’m looking for a room to rent. I was wondering if anything’s available?” Jordan says to the town hall clerk.

The clerk raises an eyebrow. “What room for rent? We only have houses available. The smallest ones are available for 5 silver a month. Are you interested?” The clerk asks.

Jordan raises an eyebrow, processing the information. I guess it’s different from the modern world I’m from, where an office worker like me could only afford to rent an apartment. He thinks before nodding his head. “Then I’ll sign up for that. Should I give you the silver now or at the end of the month?” He asks.

The clerk raises his hand. “Hand it over.” He says.

Jordan hands over the silver. He had already exchanged some experience points for silver from the Transmigrator System. It was 100 experience points for 1 silver, which matched the price for gold.

The clerk stores the payment away and begins to make a record, before standing up. “Come along. Let me show you to your new place.” He says, leading the way.

  …

  …

After receiving the keys for his new place, Jordan went shopping for food before coming home to prepare himself dinner. As he ate the meal, he couldn’t help but think that his was also the best meal he’s ever had.

As the sun began to set, Jordan lay on his bed and slowly drifts off to sleep. It feels good to earn your keep… He thinks, as he feels the satisfaction of the day, like a weighted blanket, carrying him to dreamland.
