Chapter 4 - I Would Have Probably Died with Them

After the men were gathered, the leaders quickly began to direct the work, and the men began working on constructing a barrier around the town, in the direction of the upcoming beast tide. It was unknown whether they would have time to complete it, but they had to try, as it was better than sitting around waiting for death.

As Jordan assisted with the barrier construction, he quickly began to search through the skills in the Experience Store. He had been given a sword and a shield, but lord knows that with his lack of skills, Jordan would be doomed to become beast dung if he didn’t do anything about it. He had roughly 50,000 points, and Jordan hoped it would be enough to tide through this crisis.

Jordan soon found what he was looking for, the skill called Sword and Shield Expertise. He immediately purchases the ability; the beginner skill costs 5000 experience points, the Journeyman skill costs 10,000 experience points, and the Expert skill costs 25,000 experience points. With his purchase, he was left with roughly 10,000 experience points, so Jordan spent it on the most expensive armor he could afford, the Red Python armor, at 8000 experience points.

The armor immediately appears in his hands and he hurriedly put it on; though it only protected his chest and abdomen, it was better than nothing.

Some of his fellow workers quickly noticed the change.

“Hey, nice armor.” One person says.

“Wish I had armor like that. Guess I’ll probably die today.” Another person says, lamenting his life.

Jordan’s face immediately turns bright red. Sorry brothers; I’ll remember you after you head to the afterlife. He thinks, offering the other unlucky men his blessings.

A scout hurriedly began to run in the their direction. “They’re coming! They’re coming!” He says, running past the barrier line.

The mercenary and adventurer captains quickly gathered their men.

“Everyone stop the construction! Gather under your captains and prepare for battle!” One of the adventurers says.

Jordan took a deep breath. Okay, this is it. Don’t panic, Jordan. You’re now an expert with the sword and shield. Speaking of, why don’t I feel any different? Should I feel different? Hopefully the Transmigrator System doesn’t scam me. He thinks, hoping to make it out of this alive.

Eventually, Jordan heard the movement in the forest, like the quick beating of a drum that was getting louder and louder. Roars and howling became apparent, and soon Jordan could see them coming out of the tree line. There were hundreds of beasts.

"Archers! Fire!" A captain calls out.

The archers immediately released their arrows and successfully put an end to several beasts, but before they could prepare another volley, the beasts were almost upon the front line.

Jordan looks at the frail and old men guarding the front line with him and he shakes his head. We’re going to die. He couldn’t help but think.

The beasts were quickly approaching, and Jordan knew he had to raise his shield.

  **BANG**

The sharp impact almost broke Jordan’s arm, but his body began to move on his own. Without even looking he angled his sword to stab at the beast from behind his shield.

  **STAB**

  **STAB**

The pressure from Jordan’s shield immediately decreased, and he lowers it to see he had stabbed the beast twice in the neck and it was now bleeding out on the ground.

Unfortunately, Jordan had no time to praise himself, as there were still hundreds of beasts attacking the townsmen.

Beside Jordan was a man using both hands for his shield, and trying his best to protect his pitiful life.

Jordan immediately sends another two stabs, and the beast bent its knees to slowly bleed out on the ground like his companion from before.

Jordan began to weave through the front line, helping his brothers-in-arms fight against the beasts. Jordan instinctively knew that the longer each of these men held out against the beasts, the better their overall survival would be. So he didn’t hesitate to help his fellow soldiers as that was also helping himself.

After a while, Jordan eventually got lost in his rhythm.

  **Stab***

  **Stab**

  **Stab**

  **Stab**

Whether it was because his consciousness couldn’t handle his reality or not, his mind had long since drifted away, and Jordan became a mindless killing machine. Even the adventures and mercenaries noticed him. They couldn’t help but exclaim in their minds; this random villager may even be better than their captains!

Eventually, several hours passed, and the numb Jordan slowly awoke from his stupor. Around him were the corpses of hundreds of beasts, as well as several weak and frail men who were forced to defend the village.

Jordan lets out a shudder. If I didn’t have the Transmigrator System, I would have probably died with them. He exclaims in his mind, lamenting the world.
