The Prelude

John was running. Fast. He didn’t even know why. His heart hammered in his chest, breath coming in jagged bursts. The night was black, the road ahead an endless stretch of asphalt. All he knew was that there was something chasing him, something he had to outrun. His sneakers slapped the pavement, his footsteps echoing through the emptiness. Then, there was a light. Bright. Blinding. Getting closer extremely fast. Before he could react, it hit him. The impact slammed through him like a train. Metal, glass, pain. Everything collapsed in an instant. His body jerked, twisted, then flopped limply across the road. The last thing he felt was the cold night air, the shock of his body breaking against the hard ground.
