Chapter 47: Hardware Upgrade: Subject to User Competence

The Guild armoury wasn't a gleaming repository of legendary artifacts. It was a forge. Hot, working space thick with the smell of quenching steel, honing oil, worn leather, and the faint, ingrained odour of old battles. Racks of well-maintained but clearly used longswords stood alongside dented shields bearing the ghosts of faded crests. Hammers rang rhythmically from the nearby forge. William found the pragmatic, function-over-form atmosphere oddly soothing compared to the anxious energy humming elsewhere in the Guild. Minimalist design focused on core objectives. Zero points for aesthetics, maximum for utility. Efficient.

Guildmaster Borin had summoned the Lumenar team here hours before their revised departure time. Sir Roland, Jett Shadowfox, Prince Caspian, Julia, and William stood before him, the weight of the impending mission settling heavily in the metallic air. Borin looked tired, the lines around his eyes carved deeper by lack of sleep and worry, but his posture was iron firm, his gaze sweeping over the small, eclectic group entrusted with Aver's most desperate gamble.

“The road ahead is dangerous,” Borin began, his voice a low rumble that cut through the rhythmic clang of the forge. No time wasted. “Oakenfall’s situation worsens daily. Tallenwood is now overrun by goblins. Getting through will test even Jett’s considerable skills.” His gaze shifted, landing squarely on William. “And you, William, have the least experience. Your… performance… in the trial demonstrated undeniable potential,” William detected pragmatic assessment, not praise, “but potential doesn’t stop goblin arrows or help you through treacherous terrain.”

Understood, William thought. Current Operational Status: F-Rank Liability. Recommended Mitigation Strategy: External hardware upgrade.

Borin gestured towards a heavy oak table nearby, where two items rested on a piece of dark, oiled canvas. “Normally, Guild rules would not allow lending special gear to an F-Rank,” he stated flatly. “But this mission is far from normal. We have a lot riding on this, too much even. It is a necessity. Julia vouches for your aptitude, Caspian seems convinced you’re about to rewrite the rules of magic, and Jett values your demonstrated survival instincts.” He grunted, a sound like grinding stone. “Therefore, I’m authorizing a temporary equipment loan. Consider it an investment into the success of the mission.”

He lifted the first item, a suit of dark leather armour. It looked well-worn, practical, bearing the scars of past encounters, scuffs on the pauldrons, the faint outline of a repaired slash across the breastplate. But as Borin held it, the dim forge light seemed to cling to its surface, shifting in ways mundane leather couldn't.

“Magically enhanced light armour,” Borin explained, placing it carefully back on the table. “Wyvern hide base, tough as boiled scales, but enchanted for significantly increased resistance to piercing, slashing, and impact, far exceeding its weight class. Also offers superior flexibility.” He paused. “It belonged to a Ranger Captain. He didn't return from his last venture into Tallenwood.”

William reached out hesitantly. The leather felt cool, impossibly supple, yet yielded with a strange, resilient firmness, like densely woven silk imbued with steel. A faint, almost sub-threshold thrumming vibrated against his fingertips, dormant power. He focused inward, directing EMMA. Analyse Item: Enhanced Leather Armor (Wyvern Hide Base). Enchantment Signature: Protective Matrix (Durability Enhancement). Estimated Effectiveness Rating: +2 versus Standard Leather. Notes: Excellent flexibility-to-protection ratio. Minor lingering mana signature. It was like upgrading from a cardboard box to military-grade composite plating.

Next, Borin presented the sword, drawing it smoothly from a plain, sturdy scabbard. The blade itself was breathtaking in its severe perfection. Longsword dimensions, flawless geometry, the steel possessing a deep, liquid gleam that seemed to drink the forge light. No ornate carvings, no jewels, just pure, lethal function. The edge looked impossibly sharp.

“Enchanted longsword,” Borin stated, his voice holding a note of respect for the weapon itself. “Primary enchantments focus on sharpness. Resists chipping, dulling. Reinforced against shattering.” He indicated the hilt, wrapped in practical, dark brown leather. “Minor grip enhancement to improve stability, even when wet or…” he didn't finish the sentence. Barely visible runes, incredibly fine, traced the fuller near the crossguard.

William reached for it. As his fingers closed around the worn, ergonomic grip, the nearly invisible runes pulsed once, a brief, soft flash of blue light reflecting in his wide eyes before fading. The sword felt… resonant in his hand. Perfectly balanced, lighter than it looked, humming with contained power. Analyse Item: Enchanted Longsword. Enchantment Signature: Edge Durability, Structural Reinforcement, Grip Enhancement (Minor). Estimated Effectiveness Rating: +2 versus Standard Longsword. Notes: Superior balance detected. Minor user attunement confirmed (rune flash).

If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

Okay. Wow. This wasn't just gear, this was a significant system upgrade. Like moving from onboard graphics to a dedicated, high-end GPU. He looked up at Borin, momentarily speechless, the analytical part of his brain struggling to process the sheer value, and trust, this represented.

“Guildmaster Borin… these are…” William stammered, the weight of the gesture hitting him. “Thank you. This is… more than generous.”

Julia stepped in smoothly, seeing his overload. “Magic items channel mana, William, ambient or from the wielder, to power their effects,” she explained calmly, her teacher mode activating. She gestured to the gear. “These focus on physical properties, durability, sharpness. Common types of enchantment, but achieving this level of quality is rare.” She paused, letting him absorb it. “Other items might hold charges, provide utility like enhanced senses, or ward against minor curses. Given enough skill, almost anything can be enchanted.”

William’s mind instantly snagged on the possibilities. EMMA could analyse these enchantments further… identify principles… could they be replicated? Modified? Applied to other objects? He mentally created a new project file: EMMA-Integrated Enchanted Gear. Status: Conceptual. Feasibility: Low (Current User Skill Level Insufficient). Potential: High. File under 'Future R&D - Pending Survival'.

“...but don't mistake them for invincibility,” Julia was saying, her tone firm, pulling him back. “They enhance, they don't replace skill or caution. Overconfidence in gear is a fast path to a shallow grave. Make sure you keep that in mind.”

He met her serious gaze, nodding. Understood. Better hardware doesn't fix buggy software. These were tools to mitigate his weaknesses, not eliminate them. “Thank you, Julia. I won’t forget.” He turned back to Borin, hefting the sword, feeling its reassuring balance. “Guildmaster, you have my word. I’ll treat these with care and do everything possible to justify this trust. I will bring them back.”

Borin merely grunted, a complex sound of acknowledgment mixed with lingering scepticism. “See that you do, lad.”

Caspian, predictably, had drifted closer, eyes fixed on the sword hilt where the runes had flashed. “Exquisite!” he breathed. “The mana signature integration is flawless! Likely Dwarven forging for the base steel, wouldn't you agree, Roland? The residual energy suggests remarkable stability!” He looked ready to request immediate metallurgical assessment.

Sir Roland placed a firm, grounding hand on the Prince’s shoulder. “It is a fine weapon, Your Highness. And practical armour. Tools for a necessary task.” He shot Caspian a look that clearly communicated Later. Addressing William, Roland’s voice was gruff, but the sharp edge of disapproval from their first meeting seemed slightly blunted. “They are a significant improvement, Shard. Learn their balance quickly. They might keep you alive long enough to contribute.” It was the closest thing to encouragement yet. William logged it.

Jett, who had been quietly checking the points on a bundle of obsidian-tipped arrows, simply nodded once towards the gear, a silent gesture of approval from the pragmatic scout.

“Alright,” Borin declared, clapping his large hands together once, decisively ending the briefing. “Gear assigned. Plan reviewed. Final personal preparations today, rest tonight.” His gaze swept over them, hard and unwavering. “Departure: Dawn, the day after tomorrow. South Gate. Your objective is Lumenar. Warn them. Secure aid if possible. Gather intel on Neverus. Do not fail.” The command hung in the forge-heavy air.

William swiftly donned the wyvern-hide armour over his tunic. It settled onto him with surprising lightness, moulding to his form almost instantly, allowing a freedom of movement the basic padding hadn't. The faint thrum of dormant magic was a constant, subtle hum against his skin. He secured the enchanted sword at his hip, its weight felt different now, balanced, ready.

He felt… upgraded. Still Level 2. Still fundamentally inexperienced. Still relying on a bizarre internal system he barely understood. But now equipped with hardware that significantly improved his baseline survivability metrics. He had a team (mostly Allied, one Key Skeptic). He had a mission (High Risk, High Importance).

Leaving the armoury, stepping back into the slightly less functional chaos of the Guildhall, William felt the combined weight, the borrowed magic, the conditional trust, the looming shadow of Tallenwood. Sharwood Forest first, then the domain of the Goblin King, then the unknown depths of Lumenar. The variables were terrifying, the probabilities daunting.

System ready for deployment, he thought, hand resting instinctively on the reassuringly solid hilt of his new sword. Let's hope the primary user can keep up.
