Chapter 2: Zhao Territory

  More than ten years later.

In a deep valley of Nanhuashan Mountain, where thick clouds and fog had gathered at the end of the year, a sudden gust of wind blew by, dispersing some of the dense cloud and fog, forming a narrow path about one zhang wide that led from the depths of the valley to the outside. If you stood here and looked into the valley, you could see two figures walking out from inside, one in front of the other.

"Its just a tiny, insignificant Xiu Xian family, isnt it? They only have one grain of Jiqi San per month, whats the big deal?! Im leaving and never coming back!"

Walking in front was a fifteen or sixteen-year-old boy, slender and slightly thin, with a somewhat delicate appearance. He wore a wrinkled and slightly yellowed white shirt, with a small leather pouch made from some rare animal skin hanging at his waist. As he walked, the boy muttered curses under his breath against the group of people who had driven him out of the valley. Probably afraid of being heard, the content of his curses was likely only clear to himself.

Behind him was a round-faced, sweet-looking, snow-white-skinned little girl. Whether it was the two small braids behind her head adorned with colorful flowers or the childishness between her eyebrows, they all revealed her approximate age without a doubt. At this moment, she was pouting, and her originally bright and shiny big eyes had turned slightly red, with teardrops welling up inside, looking as if tears might fall from her eyes at any moment.

"Wugeng, are you really going to leave? Otherwise, Ill go beg the Great Elder for mercy and ask him to let you stay. You have such talent in crafting talismans, the family must need you." The little girl slowly followed behind the young man, finally gathering the courage to speak up.

"Its okay, Xīnér. Ill stay at Jians house to cultivate, but there wont be any progress anyway. Its better for me to go out and make a name for myself, maybe Ill find some extraordinary spiritual medicine or make great progress in my cultivation. When Ive achieved great success in my cultivation, Ill definitely come back, you shouldnt slack off either, or else your cultivation will still be inferior to mine." The young man curled his lips and made a mocking expression at the girl.

"Whod lose to you, anyway?" The girls small mouth pouted even higher.

"Hurry back, were almost at the exit, Im leaving!" The young man suddenly ran a few steps quickly and rushed out of the valley, leaving only the girl standing still.

The girl gazed at the boys receding back for a long time before lowering her head, sighing softly, and turning to walk into the dense fog.

"Wuge, you must come back early."

  ……

This young man is Zhao Di, also known as Wu Gen.

Zhao Di was his former name, he was originally a twenty-year-old scholar of the Great Tang Dynasty, who spent his days studying hard in a small mountain retreat. One day, feeling that the night sky was particularly beautiful, he walked out of the study to admire it and was inexplicably struck by a meteor-like light.

That was his last memory; he only remembered that suddenly it brightened in front of him and then lost consciousness.

It didnt know how long it had been, maybe decades, or perhaps just a dream in an afternoon nap, or even several reincarnations. His consciousness finally woke up again, but found himself transformed into a newborn baby. Whats more frustrating was that he no longer knew where he was, and there was not a single person around him.

And when Zhao Di didnt even know who his own biological parents were, he was taken into the Grand Canyon of Nan Hua Mountain by Jian Han, a low-ranking cultivator from the Jian family. He was raised and grew up in this place by a cultivation family known as the "Nan Hua Jian Family". During this process, Zhao Di finally learned the local language, and through constant inquiry, he gained some understanding of this new world.

This is a place called Tianyuan Continent, which is not on the land where he used to live. All that is known is that Tianyuan Continent is an extremely vast existence. Specifically, how big it is, no one in the Jian family knows, and there is no way to describe it clearly. In one sentence, this continent can be described as having a vast territory with sparse population, of course, this sparseness is relative, because Tianyuan Continent is really too large, even if the population density is not high, its population is still extremely huge.

On this continent, humans can be divided into two types: ordinary mortals and cultivators who possess a spiritual root and can cultivate to become immortals, also known as practitioners. The proportion of the latter is extremely low, less than one in a thousand, and they usually hide in sacred places for cultivation, generally not entering the mortal world, let alone participating in wars and struggles for power in the mortal world. As a result, most mortals are completely unaware of the existence of cultivators.

What exactly is the spiritual root that distinguishes ordinary people from cultivators, no one in the Jian family can give a clear statement, only saying that the spiritual root is innate, and only those who possess it can sense the spiritual energy existing in the heavens and earth, and guide it into their body to cultivate. It is said that the highest state of cultivation can attain immortality and boundless magical powers, as well as eternal youth.

Ordinary people without spiritual roots cannot feel the spiritual energy of heaven and earth, let alone cultivate immortality. Moreover, the probability of ordinary peoples descendants having spiritual roots is less than one in ten thousand. However, if one parent is a cultivator, the probability of their offspring having spiritual roots increases greatly. If both parents are cultivators, the probability can reach as high as one-quarter to one-half. As a result, cultivators intermarry and form large and small immortal families and sects.

Nan Hua Jian Jia, a small immortal family located in the southeastern part of Tian Yuan Continents Jin Yan Country, with its main sphere of influence being the Nan Hua mountain range spanning over 3,000 miles, is one of the branches of the Xiu Xian forces in the thirteen states and counties of Jin Yan Country, specifically in the state of Kun.

According to Jian Han, he was on his way back to Nanhuashan after completing a family task when he passed through a desolate wilderness where few people ventured. To his surprise, he found an infant sleeping soundly, and whats more, the child had spiritual roots. Curious, he searched high and low for half a day but didnt find anyone else within a radius of over ten miles, so he simply took the baby back to the Jian family.

This baby was Zhao Di. He was brought into the Jian family at a time when they were searching everywhere for children with spiritual roots to expand their fresh blood. In this way, he was raised by the Jian family and became a member of the Jian family. No one gave him an official name, only a nickname called "Wu Gen".

This is because Zhao Dis spiritual root attribute is a hybrid of the five attributes of gold, wood, water, fire and earth, which is the worst among all spiritual root species.

The spiritual root is usually divided into five attributes: gold, wood, water, fire, and earth, known as the Five Elements. Most cultivators spiritual roots are composed of one or more of these five attributes. Generally speaking, the fewer types of attributes contained in the spiritual root, the purer it is, and the easier it is to sense the corresponding heavenly and earthly spiritual energy, and the faster the absorption and cultivation will be. Spiritual roots with four or five mixed attributes are particularly difficult to cultivate and are also known as miscellaneous spiritual roots or pseudo-spiritual roots, belonging to a class of very poor quality.

While the single-attribute spiritual root is extremely rare, it has an extremely high innate talent and cultivates at an extremely fast speed. It can often cultivate to a very high realm, known as the Tian Ling Gen, which means "Heavens Proud Son". However, the appearance of such a Tian Ling Gen is also extremely rare. Not to mention the small Jian family, even among the over 1,000 large and small cultivation families and sects in the Jin Yan country where the Jian family resides, the appearance of a Tian Ling Gen only occurs once every few hundred years. Moreover, as soon as a Tian Ling Gen appears, it immediately becomes an object of contention among the cultivation forces. Having a Tian Ling Gen cultivator is equivalent to reserving a boundless future great master for ones own sect, and the sects power will be unshakeable for a very long time. According to legend, among the few Tian Ling Gen cultivators in Jin Yan country over the past few thousand years, those who were not assassinated by the enemy family all cultivated to realms that ordinary cultivators could hardly imagine.

In addition to these five-element attribute spiritual roots, there are some variant spiritual roots, such as the Thunder Spiritual Root produced by the variation and sublimation of the Metal and Water dual-attribute spiritual root, the Wind Spiritual Root generated by the variation of the Earth and Fire dual-attribute spiritual root, and also the Ice Spiritual Root, Phantom Spiritual Root, etc., which are all called Variant Spiritual Roots. The appearance rate of these spiritual roots is slightly higher than that of the Heavenly Spiritual Root. Although cultivators with variant spiritual roots are somewhat inferior to those with heavenly spiritual roots in terms of cultivation, they are far ahead of other cultivators, especially when paired with special techniques that match their spiritual root, their actual strength often surpasses that of other cultivators of the same level by a large margin.

Although Zhao Di also had a spiritual root, it was the worst kind. The people of the Jian family naturally didnt think highly of him from a young age, and they were even too lazy to bother thinking of a name for him, usually just calling him "Wu Gen" (Five Roots). Among the same batch of children, there was another one with an extremely poor spiritual root attribute, also a five-element spiritual root, who was less than a month younger than Zhao Di. His nickname was even more unpleasant, being called "Xiao Wu Gen" (Little Five Roots).

After learning about his spiritual root attribute, Zhao Di was depressed for a long time, but later became even more determined to embark on the path of cultivation. He believed that diligence could make up for lack of talent, and he didnt believe that with a brain over twenty years old, he still couldnt surpass those children around him who were only a few years old. There was another factor, he always thought that his rebirth as an infant and that meteor-like light ball were related, no matter whether it was a coincidence or not, he wanted to figure out what was going on and find a way back to the Great Tang Empire. If one day he could become a legendary cultivator, possessing divine powers that could change the heavens and earth, cross spatial boundaries, perhaps then he would be able to find the answer.
